Body size in early life and the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Greater early life adiposity has been reported to reduce postmenopausal breast cancer risk but it is unclear whether this association varies by tumour characteristics. We aimed to assess associations of early life body size with postmenopausal breast cancer and its subtypes, allowing for body size at other ages. METHODS: A total of 342,079 postmenopausal UK women who reported their body size at age 10, clothes size at age 20, and body mass index (BMI) at baseline (around age 60) were followed by record linkage to national databases for cancers and deaths. Cox regression yielded ad

Body Size and the Risk of Primary Hyperparathyroidism in Women: A Cohort Study.

Greater body weight and fat mass have been associated with higher serum parathyroid hormone levels and a higher prevalence of primary hyperparathyroidism (P-HPTH) in women. However, prospective studies to evaluate whether greater body size associates with a higher incidence of developing P-HPTH have not been reported. We investigated whether greater body size was independently associated with a higher risk for developing P-HPTH in women. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 85,013 female participants in the Nurses' Health Study I followed for up to 26 years. Body size was measured via mu

Endothelial vasodilatation in newborns is related to body size and maternal hypertension.

OBJECTIVE: The fetal response to an adverse intrauterine environment - reflected in low birth weight - is thought to cause an increased risk for adult hypertension. A possible mechanism by which fetal adaptive responses contribute to hypertension is an adverse effect on endothelial function. Identifying individuals with endothelial dysfunction as early as possible may assist in understanding the inverse association between birth weight and hypertension. The present study aimed to identify determinants of endothelial vasodilatation in the first week of life. METHODS: One hundred and four term

Movement performance and body size: the relationship for different groups of tests.

It has been shown that inconsistently applied normalization for body size could be an important methodological problem in testing physical performance in areas such as sports, physical education, ergonomy, or physical medicine and rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to evaluate a part of the recently proposed classification of physical performance tests (Jaric 2003) based on the role of body size in the tested performance. Presuming a normalization method P(n)= P/ S(b) based on an allometric relationship between the tested performance P and a selected index of body size S (P(n) performan

Pre-morbid body size and the prognosis of women with breast cancer.

Obesity has been associated with poor prognosis of breast cancer, but studies investigating indicators of adiposity, independent of height, such as skinfold thickness and weight/height ratio, have been limited. From a cohort of 89,835 women in the National Breast Screening Study, data on histologically confirmed, incident cases of invasive carcinoma of breast, diagnosed between January 1981 to June 1992, were analyzed. Body measurements were taken at enrollment and other risk-factor information from a self-administered questionnaire completed prior to diagnosis of the breast cancer. Mortality

Metabolic adjustments in neonatal dwarf and normal-sized goat kids: Relationship between serum metabolites and body size.

The relationship between body size and metabolism of goats remains poorly studied. The study evaluated the neonatal metabolic adjustments and elucidated the relationship between serum metabolites and body size in 39 single-born dwarf and normal-sized goat kids. Body weight, length and height of kids were recorded at birth and blood samples were collected from the dwarf and normal-sized (Red Sokoto and Sahel) goats on Days 0 (birth), 3, 10 and 20, postnatal. Also, the body mass index (BMI) was calculated and the concentration of metabolic markers was determined. Results revealed that values of

How will warming affect the growth and body size of the largest extant amphibian? More than the temperature-size rule.

Declining body size is a universal ecological response to global warming in ectotherms. Ectotherms grow faster but mature at a smaller size at higher temperatures. This phenomenon is known as the temperature-size rule (TSR). However, we know little about the details of the relationship between temperature and size. Here, this issue was studied in the Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus), one of the largest extant amphibians and a flagship species of conservation in China. Warm-acclimated A. davidianus larvae (25 °C) had accelerated development but little superiority in body growth whe

Association of size at birth with adolescent hormone levels, body size and age at menarche: relevance for breast cancer risk.

Birth size has been positively associated with age at menarche and height in adolescence and adulthood, but the relevant biological mechanisms remain unclear. Among 262 Norwegian term-born singleton girls, birth size measures (weight, length, ponderal index, head circumference and subscapular skin-fold thickness) were analysed in relation to adolescent hormone levels (oestradiol, prolactin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, androstenedione and free testosterone index), age at menarche and adolescent (ages 12.7-15.5 years) and body size (height, weight, body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio) us

Neural correlates of body size estimation: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

Inaccurate body size estimation (BSE), the discrepancy between an individual's actual and perceived body size and shape, is observed not only in clinical conditions like eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder but also in healthy individuals. Understanding the neural mechanisms that support BSE is timely, given growing interest in perceptual biases and their potential relevance for identifying mechanisms that may be disrupted in clinical populations. However, the field has an incomplete understanding of brain systems functionally involved in BSE ability. To address this, we performed a s

Optimizing ring selection for secondary tricuspid regurgitation: the role of body size.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to investigate whether a larger prosthetic ring relative to a patient's body surface area (BSA) is associated with an increased risk of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) recurrence after tricuspid annuloplasty and of adverse effects on long-term outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 239 patients who underwent tricuspid ring annuloplasty and mitral valve surgery between 2011 and 2016. The tricuspid annuloplasty ring index (TARI) was calculated by dividing the size of the annuloplasty ring (mm) by the BSA (m2). Risk factors for recurrent TR were determ

Women carry for less: body size, pelvis width, loading position and energetics.

The energetic cost of walking varies with mass and speed; however, the metabolic cost of carrying loads has not consistently increased proportionally to the mass carried. The cost of carrying mass, and the speed at which human walkers carry this mass, has been shown to vary with load position and load description (e.g. child vs. groceries). Additionally, the preponderance of women carriers around the world, and the tendency for certain kinds of population-level sexual dimorphism has led to the hypothesis that women might be more effective carriers than men. Here, I investigate the energetic co

Scaling the Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope for Body Size in Cystic Fibrosis.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe the relationship between body size and oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and healthy controls (CON), to identify appropriate scaling procedures to adjust the influence of body size upon OUES. METHODS: The OUES was derived using maximal and submaximal points from cardiopulmonary exercise testing in 72 children (36 CF and 36 CON). OUES was subsequently scaled for stature, body mass (BM), and body surface area (BSA) using ratio-standard (Y/X) and allometric (Y/X) methods. Pearson's correlation coef

Body Size, Metabolic Factors, and Risk of Endometrial Cancer in Black Women.

Total and abdominal obesity, as well as metabolic factors such as type 2 diabetes, have been associated with a higher risk of endometrial cancer in white women. It remains unclear to what extent these factors influence the risk of endometrial cancer in black women. We followed 47,557 participants from the Black Women's Health Study for incident endometrial cancer from 1995 through 2013 (n = 274). We used Cox regression models to estimate incidence rate ratios and 95% confidence intervals while accounting for potential confounders. Incidence rate ratios for body mass indices (weight (kg)/height

Comparative population genomics reveals genetic basis underlying body size of domestic chickens.

Body size is the most important economic trait for animal production and breeding. Several hundreds of loci have been reported to be associated with growth trait and body weight in chickens. The loci are mapped to large genomic regions due to the low density and limited number of genetic markers in previous studies. Herein, we employed comparative population genomics to identify genetic basis underlying the small body size of Yuanbao chicken (a famous ornamental chicken) based on 89 whole genomes. The most significant signal was mapped to the BMP10 gene, whose expression was upregulated in the

Impact of neighborhoods and body size on survival after breast cancer diagnosis.

With data from the Neighborhoods and Breast Cancer Study, we examined the associations between body size, social and built environments, and survival following breast cancer diagnosis among 4347 women in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lower neighborhood socioeconomic status and greater neighborhood crowding were associated with higher waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). After mutual adjustment, WHR, but not neighborhood characteristics, was positively associated with overall mortality and marginally with breast cancer-specific mortality. Our findings suggest that WHR is an important modifiable prognostic f
