Temporal and spatial dispersion of human body temperature during deep hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: Clinical temperature management remains challenging. Choosing the right sensor location to determine the core body temperature is a particular matter of academic and clinical debate. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of measured temperatures at different sites during surgery in deep hypothermic patients. METHODS: In this prospective single-centre study, we studied 24 patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery: 12 in normothermia, 3 in mild, and 9 in deep hypothermia. Temperature recordings of a non-invasive heat flux sensor at the forehead were compared with the art

Hypothalamic cholinergic regulation of body temperature and water intake in rats.

Without disturbing the behavior of unanesthetized rats, the perfusion of neostigmine through microdialysis probe into the anterior hypothalamus (AH), paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and lateral ventricle (LV) decreased body temperature and increased water intake. On the other hand, the perfusion into the supraoptic nucleus (SON) increased the body temperature. The perfusion of neostigmine increased the extracellular concentration of acetylcholine in the perfusion sites except LV. Changes, both decrease and increase, in body temperature and increase in water intake were correlated with increases

Circannual and menstrual rhythm characteristics in manic episodes and body temperature.

Most reports in the literature deal with groups when summarizing the timing of affective disorders along the scale of the year and the menstrual cycle. In order to look for any regularity in timing of manic episodes in a single individual along these two time scales, a woman with a history of mania only, caused by schizoaffective disorder and on maintenance therapy with thioridazine hydrochloride self-measured basal body temperature daily and recorded onset and duration of manic episodes for 11 years. Statistically significant rhythms were found in body temperature with periods equal to the me

Sound output of electronic laryngeal prostheses at room and body temperature.

An electronic laryngeal prosthesis, fully-implantable in the neck, is a desirable source of artificial voice. Emitted sound energy in a frequency range suitable for adult males and females must be of the correct period and intensity and rich in powerful harmonics. Any such device places severe demands on a bioencapsulant used to enclose the transducer. Location of the devices within the central neck demands a prosthesis-coating combination capable of passing sound energy at central body temperature. This study reports on four identical prostheses, coated with a polyvinylidene chloride, a copol

Effects of temperature on some membrane characteristics of carotid body cells.

Excised cat carotid bodies and nerves were placed in a Lucite chamber through which saline flowed at different temperatures. Action potentials were recorded with a suction electrode. Glomus cells were impaled with microelectrodes and identified by ejecting Procion navy blue from the micropipette. Membrane potentials (MP) averaged 20 mV and input resistances (R0), 40 Momega. Cooling induced depolarization and decreased R0. This effect had a reversal potential of about -6 mV. [K+]0 did not affect MP, R0, or cooling effects. Lack of sodium increased MP, R0, and depressed cooling effects. Low chlo

Elevation in set point for body temperature regulation after prolonged exercise.

1. In nine healthy men, after prolonged exercise (approximately 37 km walk and 2.5 km ascent and descent in 9 hr) deep body temperature at rest stabilized at a higher level than in the absence of previous exercise.2. The increase, approximately 0.36 degrees C, was recorded at both oral and rectal sites. It persisted while the subjects rested in warm and in cool surroundings, and disappeared about 11 hr after the end of exercise.3. The increase in body temperature after exercise was accompanied by a similar increase in the body temperature at which sweating started during body heating.4. After

Constitutively active glucagon receptor (GCGR) physiologically regulates body temperature in lizards.

Endotherms use complex internal mechanisms to maintain a steady body temperature, whereas ectotherms rely on environmental factors and behaviors for thermoregulation. Certain ectothermic animals, like some lizards, can also physiologically regulate their body temperature to some extent, with interspecies variations in thermoregulatory capacity under low-temperature conditions. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this physiological regulation have remained unclear since its discovery about 80 years ago. Here, we reveal that the hepatic expression of constitutively active glucagon recep

Integrated Device for Cancer Nucleic Acid Biomarker Detection at Body Temperature.

The quantitative analysis of nucleic acid markers is extensively utilized in cancer detection. However, it faces significant challenges, such as the need for specialized detection devices and the inherent complexity of testing procedures. To address these issues, this study proposes a simplified, rapid, and user-friendly platform for cancer nucleic acid marker detection. We firstly designed a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) device for the isothermal amplification reaction of nucleic acid biomarkers based on reverse-transcription recombinase-aided amplification (RT-RAA) technology. Specifically, th

Climate-induced shifts in crocodile body temperature impact behavior and performance.

The increase of energy in the climate system caused by anthropogenic climate change is expected to disrupt predictable weather patterns and result in greater temperature extremes.1,2 As a result of these climate shifts, El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which drives predictable periods of hot/dry and cool/wet across the Pacific, is expected to increase in variability and magnitude.3 These changes will significantly impact ectotherms, whose performance across a range of behaviors is dependent on local environmental temperatures.4 As such, we must understand the way individuals experience cli

Low-Temperature-Tolerant Strain-Sensing Flexible Composite for Soft Body Armor.

Developing soft body armor with sensing characteristics in various application scenarios is a challenge but important for creating a peaceful world and personal safety, whereas existing materials suffer from indefinite protective effects and stimulus response at subzero temperatures in the long term. Herein, an anti-freezing and flexible puncture-resistance composite with strain-sensing ability is developed by compounding a NaCl-soaked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA)/glycerol (Gly) hydrogel (PSGN hydrogel) with Kevlar fabric. After freezing-thawing treatment once and NaCl immers

Retrospective investigation of decreasing body temperature trends during anaesthesia in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia during the perianaesthetic period may lead to an increased risk of morbidity in veterinary patients. However, the timeline of the decrease in body temperature during general anaesthesia has been minimally investigated. METHODS: Anaesthetic records of 1097 client-owned dogs were examined. Change in body temperature (ΔBT = baseline temperature - time point temperature) was plotted over time for all dogs. The slope of ΔBT was calculated for each 15-minute interval, and the magnitude of the largest ΔBT and the time point at which the largest ΔBT occurred were determined fo

Improved neural control of body temperature following heat acclimation in humans.

KEY POINTS: With the advent of more frequent extreme heat events, adaptability to hot environments will be crucial for the survival of many species, including humans. However, the mechanisms that mediate human heat adaptation have remained elusive. We tested the hypothesis that heat acclimation improves the neural control of body temperature. Skin sympathetic nerve activity, comprising the efferent neural signal that activates heat loss thermoeffectors, was measured in healthy adults exposed to passive heat stress before and after a 7 day heat acclimation protocol. Heat acclimation reduced the

Body temperature stability in the whale shark, the world's largest fish.

It is generally assumed that the body temperature of large animals is less likely to change because of their large body size, resulting in a high thermal inertia and a smaller surface area to volume ratio. The goal of this study was to investigate the stability of body temperature in large fish using data from field experiments. We measured the muscle temperatures of free-ranging whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), the largest extant fish globally, and investigated their ectothermic physiology and the stability of their body temperature. The muscle temperature changed substantially more slowly tha

Daytime melatonin and light independently affect human alertness and body temperature.

Light significantly improves alertness during the night (Cajochen, Sleep Med Rev, 11, 2007 and 453; Ruger et al., AJP Regul Integr Comp Physiol, 290, 2005 and R1413), but results are less conclusive at daytime (Lok et al., J Biol Rhythms, 33, 2018 and 589). Melatonin and core body temperature levels at those times of day may contribute to differences in alerting effects of light. In this experiment, the combined effect of daytime exogenous melatonin administration and light intensity on alertness, body temperature, and skin temperature was studied. The goal was to assess whether (a) alerting e

Body temperature measurement in ambulance: a challenge of 21-st century?

BACKGROUND: Some crucial decisions in treatment of hypothermic patients are closely linked to core body temperature. They concern modification of resuscitation algorithms and choosing the target hospital. Under- as well as over-estimation of a patient's temperature may limit his chances for survival. Only thermometers designed for core temperature measurement can serve as a guide in such decision making. The aim of the study was to assess whether ambulance teams are equipped properly to measure core temperature. METHODS: A survey study was conducted in collaboration with the Health Ministry i

Improved osteochondral allograft preservation using serum-free media at body temperature.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondral allografts (OCAs) are currently preserved at 4°C and used within 28 days of donor harvest. The window of opportunity for implantation is limited to 14 days due to a 2-week disease testing protocol. HYPOTHESIS: Osteochondral allograft tissues stored at 37°C will have significantly higher chondrocyte viability, as well as superior biochemical and biomechanical properties, than those stored at 4°C. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Osteochondral allografts from 15 adult canine cadavers were aseptically harvested within 4 hours of death. Medial and la

Kv4.2 mediates histamine modulation of preoptic neuron activity and body temperature.

Histamine regulates arousal, circadian rhythms, and thermoregulation. Activation of H3 histamine receptors expressed by preoptic GABAergic neurons results in a decrease of their firing rate and hyperthermia. Here we report that an increase in the A-type K⁺ current in preoptic GABAergic neurons in response to activation of H3 histamine receptors results in decreased firing rate and hyperthermia in mice. The Kv4.2 subunit is required for these actions in spite of the fact that Kv4.2⁻/⁻ preoptic GABAergic neurons display A-type currents and firing characteristics similar to those of wild-type neu
