Physiological and thermoregulatory effects of oral taurine supplementation on exercise tolerance during forced convective cooling.

AbstractWe investigated the effects of taurine supplementation on cycling time to exhaustion in cold conditions. Eleven males cycled to exhaustion at a power output equivalent to the mid-point between ventilatory threshold and maximum aerobic power following 15-min rest in the cold (apparent temperature of ∼ 4°C; air flow of 4.17 m s-1). Two hours before, participants ingested taurine (50 mg·kg-1) or placebo beverage. Pulmonary gases, carbohydrate (CHO) and fat oxidation, body temperatures, mean local sweat rate, heart rate, rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and thermal comfort were recorded. T

Cooler snakes respond more strongly to infrared stimuli, but we have no idea why.

The pit organ defining pit vipers (Crotalinae) contains a membrane covered with temperature receptors that detect thermal radiation from environmental surfaces. Temperature is both the environmental parameter being sensed and the mechanism by which the pit membrane detects the signal. As snakes are ectotherms, temperature also has a strong influence on neurological and locomotor responses to the signal. This study of Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus) systematically examined the effect of body, target and background temperatures on response to a moving target. We presented each snake wit

Beating the heat at low tide: infrared thermography suggests persistent evaporative cooling in a keystone predator (Pisaster ochraceus).

Climate change is increasing temperature variability, driving more frequent and intense heat events that risk pushing species beyond their thermal limits. Ectotherms, which rely on external sources to regulate their body temperature, are especially vulnerable to heat stress. Understanding the range of body temperatures ectotherms experience in the field is essential for assessing how they respond to changing thermal regimes. Yet, point-source temperature loggers often fail to capture the complexity of thermoregulation in living organisms. Infrared thermography (IRT) offers a portable, cost-eff

Factors influencing scrotal temperature in the bull during simulated heat treatments and thermoneutral conditions as determined by multimodel inferencing.

The creation of any model is complex requiring vast amounts of data, typically gathered over a series of experiments. Specifically the temperature humidity index (THI) and heat load index (HLI) are used as management tools to implement mitigation strategies during hot climatic conditions. Exposure of the testes to hot climatic conditions has a negative impact on spermatogenesis in the bull, and other species. Despite the bull having effective scrotal thermoregulatory ability, these mechanisms can breakdown when the bull is under heat stressed causing scrotal temperature to increase. The abilit

Scrotal temperature change during running in naked humans.

Male reproductive organs are functionally affected by high body temperature. This study aimed to clarify the thermoregulation mechanisms of the human scrotum during running, and experiments were conducted to investigate temperature changes in the whole body and the scrotum. Eleven male long-distance runners performed treadmill running at 60%[Formula: see text] for 60 min in an indoor environment at 27 °C and 40% relative humidity. Immediately after the start of the run, the skin temperatures in areas other than the scrotum decreased or showed a tendency to decrease. In contrast, the scrotal te

Forced-air prewarming prevents hypothermia during living donor liver transplantation: a randomized controlled trial.

Despite various intraoperative thermal strategies, core heat loss is considerable during liver transplantation and hypothermia is common. We tested whether forced-air prewarming prevents hypothermia during liver transplantation. Adult patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation were randomly assigned to non-prewarming group (n = 20) or prewarming group (n = 20). Patients in prewarming group underwent 30-min forced-air warming before anesthetic induction. During surgery, core temperature was measured in the pulmonary artery. The primary outcome was intraoperative hypothermia (< 36.0

Whole-body cooling effectiveness of cold intravenous saline following exercise hyperthermia: a randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: In some athletic, occupational, military and emergency settings, cold intravenous (IV) fluids are used to facilitate whole-body cooling in an effort to treat heat illness. This treatment has anecdotal support, but currently lacks evidence supporting it as a whole-body cooling modality. Other modalities may offer superior cooling rates, and thus, patient outcomes following treatment. We sought to evaluate cooling rates of cold-IV normal saline immediately following exercise-induced hyperthermia. METHODS: Eight healthy participants (3 females; 25 ± 2y; 72.9 ± 10.9 kg) completed 2

Social huddling and physiological thermoregulation are related to melanism in the nocturnal barn owl.

Endothermic animals vary in their physiological ability to maintain a constant body temperature. Since melanin-based coloration is related to thermoregulation and energy homeostasis, we predict that dark and pale melanic individuals adopt different behaviours to regulate their body temperature. Young animals are particularly sensitive to a decrease in ambient temperature because their physiological system is not yet mature and growth may be traded-off against thermoregulation. To reduce energy loss, offspring huddle during periods of cold weather. We investigated in nestling barn owls (Tyto al

Considerations for the measurement of core, skin and mean body temperatures.

Despite previous reviews and commentaries, significant misconceptions remain concerning deep-body (core) and skin temperature measurement in humans. Therefore, the authors have assembled the pertinent Laws of Thermodynamics and other first principles that govern physical and physiological heat exchanges. The resulting review is aimed at providing theoretical and empirical justifications for collecting and interpreting these data. The primary emphasis is upon deep-body temperatures, with discussions of intramuscular, subcutaneous, transcutaneous and skin temperatures included. These are all tur

Sleep and body temperature in TNFα knockout mice: The effects of sleep deprivation, β3-AR stimulation and exogenous TNFα.

Increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines is assumed to mediate increased sleep under inflammatory conditions, such as systemic infections or recovery from sleep loss. The role of cytokines in sleep regulation under normal conditions is less clear. In the present study, we investigated the role of endogenous tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) in sleep regulation using TNFα knockout (KO) mice. Under control conditions at thermoneutral ambient temperature, total sleep time did not differ between TNFα KO and wild-type (WT) mice, but TNFα KO mice had increased rapid-eye-movement sleep (RE

Behavioral and physiological responses to short-term cold exposure in calves carrying the SLICK1 allele.

The SLICK1 genetic variant, originally identified in Senepol cattle, enhances heat tolerance in association with a short hair coat. The improved heat tolerance is linked to an increased ability to lose heat, which may lead to increased cold susceptibility in colder, winter environments. Our objective was to measure the thermoregulatory responses of Friesian-Jersey crossbred SLICK1 carriers and control calves during short-term, controlled, cold challenges over 2 yr. These were allocated into groups of 4 (2 slicks and 2 controls), penned individually, and subjected to acute cold temperatures (-4

Comparing thermoregulatory responses between short and long moderate intensity intermittent exercise protocols with the same duty cycle.

To date, the thermoregulatory response between continuous and intermittent exercises has been investigated whilst limited studies are available to examine the thermoregulatory responses between different modes of intermittent exercises. We sought to determine the effect of two patterns of short duration intermittent exercises (180:180 (3-min) and 30:30 s (30-s) work: rest) on thermoregulatory responses in a temperate environment (25 °C, 50% RH, vapor pressure: 1.6 kPa) with low airflow (0.2 m/s). Twelve male participants (Age:24.0(5.0) year; VO2max: 53(8) mL.kg-1.min-1; BSA:1.7(0.1) m2) cycled

Finite element model of female thermoregulation with geometry based on medical images.

INTRODUCTION: this study describes the development of a female finite element thermoregulatory model (FETM) METHOD: the female body model was developed from medical image datasets of a median U.S. female and was constructed to be anatomically correct. The body model preserves the geometric shapes of 13 organs and tissues, including skin, muscles, fat, bones, heart, lungs, brain, bladder, intestines, stomach, kidneys, liver, and eyes. Heat balance within the body is described by the bio-heat transfer equation. Heat exchange at the skin surface includes conduction, convection, radiation, and swe

Comparison of the effects of high and low levels of solar radiations on exercise capacity in hot outdoor environments.

BACKGROUND: High solar radiation from the sun in the heat outdoor may be impaired exercise capacity. This study aimed to compare the effects of different levels of solar radiation on exercise capacity and evaluate skin temperature responses in the heat. METHODS: Seven male participants performed cycling exercise at 60% of their maximal oxygen uptake until volitional exhaustion in hot outdoor environments (approximately 33-35°C, 40-50% relative humidity) under both clear sky (high solar radiation trial: 1062±50 W/m2) and under thick clouds (low solar radiation trial: 438±52 W/m2). Changes in rectal temperature as a means of assessing heat tolerance and sensitivity in chickens.

High ambient temperature and relative humidity significantly affect growth and production performance in poultry. Ability of poultry to regulate their core body temperature relative to the ambient temperature depends on the relative nutrient/energy expenditure in maintenance and performance requirements. We hypothesized that changes in rectal temperature corrected for surface area can be used as a measure of heat tolerance/sensitivity. Rectal temperatures of one hundred mixed sex Ross 308 broiler chickens were measured hourly from 6 AM to 6 PM at 24 days of age. The ambient temperature and rel

One Cool Guy: Scientific Contributions of John Hayward, Cold Water Pioneer.

John Hayward, PhD (1937-2012), was an early and significant contributor to the understanding of cold water immersion physiology and survival. This article summarizes his work on the 50th anniversary of his first publication in this area. He described areas of high heat loss and emphasized the importance of protecting these areas during cold exposure using the Heat Escape Lessening Posture (HELP) and the potential for heat donation to these areas during rewarming. He described several factors that affect the rate of core cooling, including body composition, behavior (swimming increases cooling

Rising surface temperatures lead to more frequent and longer burrow retreats in males of the fiddler crab, Minuca pugnax.

The fiddler crab Minuca pugnax occupies thermally unstable mudflat habitats along the eastern United States coastline, where it uses behavioral thermoregulation, including burrow retreats, to manage body temperature (Tb). We explored the relationship between frequency of burrow use and environmental conditions, including burrow and surface temperatures, relative tidal height, and time of day, by twenty male M. pugnax in breeding areas around Flax Pond, New York, USA. We found a highly significant positive correlation between burrow use and surface temperature, with a clear shift to longer time

Perioperative Prewarming: Heat Transfer and Physiology.

To appreciate the strategy of prewarming, perioperative personnel should have a basic understanding of the physics of heat transfer and the thermoregulatory pathophysiology of anesthesia. The dominant cause of postinduction hypothermia is anesthesia-related redistribution of heat within the body; the role of cutaneous heat loss is minimal. Physiologic thermoregulatory system changes that occur in response to anesthesia make it almost impossible to reverse intraoperative hypothermia. However, prewarming is an effective strategy to prevent postinduction hypothermia from redistribution because it
