Hunger, Food Cravings, and Diet Satisfaction are Related to Changes in Body Weight During a 6-Month Behavioral Weight Loss Intervention: The Beef WISE Study.

Previously published findings from the Beef WISE Study (Beef's Role in Weight Improvement, Satisfaction, and Energy) indicated equivalent weight loss between two energy-restricted higher protein (HP) diets: A HP diet with ≥4 weekly servings of lean beef (B; n = 60) and a HP diet restricted in all red meats (NB; n = 60). Long-term adherence to dietary prescriptions is critical for weight management but may be adversely affected by changes in appetite, food cravings, and diet satisfaction that often accompany weight loss. A secondary a priori aim of the Beef WISE Study was to compare subjective

Age and sex differences in the relationship of body weight changes with colon cancer risks: A nationwide cohort study.

Colon cancer is a significant health concern, and obesity is a well-established risk factor. However, previous studies have mainly focused on assessing body weight as a risk factor for colon cancer at a specific time point. This nationwide cohort study investigated the association between body weight changes, which can fluctuate throughout an individual's lifespan, and the incidence of colon cancer using the South Korean population database provided by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). Participants who underwent biennial health screenings between 2004 and 2006, and had follow-up he

The effect of changing dialysate bicarbonate concentration on serum bicarbonate, body weight and normalized nitrogen appearance rate.

INTRODUCTION: Most hemodialysis machines deliver a fixed bicarbonate concentration. Higher concentrations may improve acidosis, but risk post-hemodialysis alkalosis, whereas lower concentrations potentially increase acidosis but reduce alkalosis. We reviewed the effects of lowering dialysate bicarbonate. METHODS: We reviewed peri-dialysis chemistries in patients switching to a lower bicarbonate dialysate at 4 time points over 19 months. RESULTS: We studied 126 patients, mean age 63.7 ± 16.3 years, 57.9% males. Post-hemodialysis alkalosis fell from 1.6 to 0.3% sessions, but pre-hemodialysis a

Elevated body weight modulates subcortical volume change and associated clinical response following electroconvulsive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a frequent somatic comorbidity of major depression, and it has been associated with worse clinical outcomes and brain structural abnormalities. Converging evidence suggests that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) induces both clinical improvements and increased subcortical grey matter volume in patients with depression. However, it remains unknown whether increased body weight modulates the clinical response and structural neuroplasticity that occur with ECT. METHODS: To address this question, we conducted a longitudinal investigation of structural MRI data from the Global

Maternal body mass index change as a new optimal gestational weight gain predictor in overweight women.

AIM: To investigate the relationship between maternal pre-pregnancy body-mass index (BMI) and neonatal birth weight. METHODS: The observational study included 2906 mothers and their neonates born from 2005 to 2011 at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Split University Hospital Center. Mothers with singleton term pregnancies who were overweight before pregnancy (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2) were compared with those with normal pre-pregnancy weight (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2). BMI change was assessed as a predictor of birth weight, categorized as small (SGA), appropriate (AGA), or large for gestation

Hypotheses and evidence related to intense sweeteners and effects on appetite and body weight changes: A scoping review of reviews.

Observed associations between consumption of diet foods and obesity have sparked controversy over whether intense sweeteners may promote weight gain, despite their negligible energy contribution. We conducted a scoping review of reviews, to obtain an overview of hypotheses, research approaches and features of the evidence on intense sweeteners' potential relationships to appetite and weight changes. We searched for reviews of the scientific literature published from 2006 to May 2017. Two reviewers independently assessed title and abstracts, and full text publications. Arksey and O'Malley's fra

Degree and Direction of Change of Body Weight in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Impact on Exercise Capacity and Cardiac Risk Factors.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) improves functional capacity and reduces mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease. It also improves cardiovascular risk factors and aids in weight reduction. Because of the increase in morbidly obese patients with cardiovascular disease, the prevalence of obesity and patterns of weight change in those undergoing CR merit fresh study. We studied 1,320 participants in a 12-week CR program at our academic medical center. We compared 5 categories: 69 class III obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥40) patients, 128 class II obese patients (BMI 35.0 to 39.9), 318 class

Slow change in body mass index during early triplet pregnancy is associated with decreased birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the impact of an average change in body mass index (BMI) during the first 16-25 weeks on outcomes of triplet pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective observational study we evaluated a cohort of triplets born to 1235 nulliparas and 705 multiparas. The difference between the pregravid body mass index (BMI) and that obtained upon admission at 16-25 weeks' gestation was averaged to obtain the weekly change in BMI, defined as slow, typical, or fast by values<1SD, +/-1SD, and >1SD from the mean average weekly change in BMI. We compared gestational age and bi

Long-term change in body composition following intentional weight loss and its effect on physical function.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A concern with intentional weight loss among middle-aged and older adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the loss of lean mass, which may lead to declining physical function. However, the association between changes in body composition with intentional weight loss and physical function over the long-term is unknown. Thus, we examined the association between changes in body composition and physical function 8 years following an intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI). SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of participants at the Baton Rou

Body mass index and weight change are associated with adult lung function trajectories: the prospective ECRHS study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported an association between weight increase and excess lung function decline in young adults followed for short periods. We aimed to estimate lung function trajectories during adulthood from 20-year weight change profiles using data from the population-based European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS). METHODS: We included 3673 participants recruited at age 20-44 years with repeated measurements of weight and lung function (forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)) in three study waves (1991-93, 1999-2003, 2010-14) unti

Early changes in serum osteocalcin and body weight are predictive of implant fixation in a rat model of implant loosening.

Biomarkers are of interest to identify patients at risk for peri-implant osteolysis and aseptic loosening. We used a rat model of particle-induced peri-implant osteolysis to investigate if early changes in biomarkers were associated with subsequent implant fixation strength. Implants were placed in rat femora, which were then challenged with intra-articular knee injections of either clean polyethylene, lipopolysaccharide-doped polyethylene, or cobalt-chromium alloy particles, with particle-free vehicle serving as control (n ≥ 8 per group). Rats were weighed weekly, blood was collected at weeks

Differential expression of hypothalamic CART mRNA in response to body weight change following different dietary interventions.

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide is widely expressed in the hypothalamus and is involved in the central regulation of energy balance. Using in situ hybridization, this study examined the roles of CART peptide in the hypothalamus of diet-induced obese (DIO) or diet-resistant (DR) mice under different dietary interventions including high-fat (HF), low-fat (LF) and pair-feeding (PF) diet for 6 weeks. Pair feeding the energy intake of the DIO and DR mice was used to determine whether there is an inherent difference in baseline CART expression that may cause the DIO and
