Development and validation of an interpretable machine learning-based calculator for predicting 5-year weight trajectories after bariatric surgery: a multinational retrospective cohort SOPHIA study.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss trajectories after bariatric surgery vary widely between individuals, and predicting weight loss before the operation remains challenging. We aimed to develop a model using machine learning to provide individual preoperative prediction of 5-year weight loss trajectories after surgery. METHODS: In this multinational retrospective observational study we enrolled adult participants (aged ≥18 years) from ten prospective cohorts (including ABOS [NCT01129297], BAREVAL [NCT02310178], the Swedish Obese Subjects study, and a large cohort from the Dutch Obesity Clinic [Nederland

Long-term risk of adult overweight and obesity among achalasia patients who underwent Heller Myotomy.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether surgically treated achalasia cases regain or surpass their usual weight into obesity or overweight in the long-term post-operative period. Here, we aimed to assess the incidence of overweight/obesity (Ob/Ow) and the risk for reoccurrence up to 48 months post-laparoscopic Heller myotomy (LHM). METHODS: We performed a cohort of 114 achalasia cases undergoing LHM. All patients had a confirmed diagnosis of achalasia and had no added comorbidities. We followed up the body mass index (BMI) at the immediate post-operative period, and at one-, six-, 12-, 24-, and 48

Impact of Prenatal Activity on Child Growth Trajectories: Findings from the APrON Study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the impact of prenatal physical activity on child growth from birth to 3 years. METHODS: Data were obtained from a subset of the Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition cohort ( N = 1725). Prenatal physical activity was evaluated using the Baecke Questionnaire in the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy and separate trajectories of latent clusters of total, work, leisure, and sports activity scores were generated (group 1 = lowest activity; group 3 = highest activity). Child weight and length/height were collected from birth to 36 months. Mult

Birth outcomes and early growth patterns associated with age at adiposity rebound: the Ma'anshan birth cohort (MABC) study.

OBJECTIVE: Early onset of adiposity rebound (AR) is considered an early indicator of obesity risk. Our objective was to investigate the association of birth outcomes and early physical growth patterns with early AR in children. METHODS: Study subjects (n = 2705) were enrolled from the Ma'anshan birth cohort (MABC). The body mass index (BMI), head circumference, waist circumference, and body fat were collected. Rapid weight gain (RWG) was defined by the change in weight standard-deviation score in the first two years of life. Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) was used to determine childre

Changes in weight talk and links with body satisfaction across adolescence and young adulthood.

The purpose of this study was to illuminate the developmental trajectories of weight talk (i.e., encouragement to diet) from parents and romantic partners and the developmental timing of weight talk as a risk factor for body satisfaction across adolescence and young adulthood. Participants were 994 individuals (53.1 % female; 34.9 % White, 27.2 % Black, 20.9 % Asian, 11.7 % multiracial) enrolled in a longitudinal cohort study in the U.S. (T1 M age = 14.4 years; T3 M age = 27.6 years). Multilevel tobit regression was used to examine trajectories of weight talk across development. Time-varying e

BMI trajectories and risk of overall and grade-specific prostate cancer: An observational cohort study among men seen for prostatic conditions.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic longitudinal patterns in body mass index (BMI) have been suggested to better predict health outcomes than static measures. Effects of BMI trajectories on prostate cancer (PCa) risk have not been thoroughly explored. METHODS: Cohort data were derived from electronic medical records of patients who were admitted to a tertiary-care hospital in the Southeastern USA during 1994-2016. Patients with a history of urologic clinic visit because of any prostatic condition and with repeatedly measured BMI (n = 4857) were included. BMI trajectories prior to PCa diagnosis were assessed

Child Weight Growth Chart and Its Associated Factors in Birth Cohort of Maku Using a Growth Curve Model and LMS Method.

BACKGROUND: Infant growth is defined as a positive change in body size over a period of time, and is a sensitive predictor of social health. The most effective way to determine child growth is by measuring birth weight and constructing a weight growth trajectory. Many studies were conducted on the effects of different factors on birth weight, but investigations of these effects on growth trajectory are really sparse. This study analyzes longitudinal data to determine factors affecting growth trajectory and used LMS chart for comparing children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cohort study, 256 ne

Obesity Progression Between Young Adulthood and Midlife and Incident Arthritis: A Retrospective Cohort Study of US Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between weight change from young adulthood to midlife and the risk of incident arthritis. METHODS: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we categorized participants into weight-change categories based on their recalled weight during young adulthood and midlife. We estimated the association of weight change and developing an arthritis condition over 10 years using adjusted Cox models. Findings were extrapolated to the US population to determine the proportion of incident arthritis cases that could be averted if the entire po

Early Life Body Size Trajectory and the Risk of Primary Open-angle Glaucoma: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of permanent blindness. Although body mass index (BMI) has been proposed as a factor associated with POAG, existing findings are inconsistent. Systematic investigations into early life body size trajectories and their association with POAG remain limited. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 467,768 participants from the UK Biobank. METHODS: Body size in childhood was constructed in comparison with peers and categorized as low, average, or high. Adult body size was classified based on residuals from sex-s

Early Life BMI Trajectories and Associations With Childbirth and Infertility Among Women.

IMPORTANCE: Concomitant with the global obesity epidemic, fertility has declined in Western countries with birth rates falling below replacement levels. A higher body mass index (BMI) among women is associated with reduced fertility, but associations with body size earlier in life are underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether trajectories of childhood BMI are associated with timing of first childbirth and infertility in women. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective, population-based cohort study used linked national register and school health examination data of women age

Maternal BMI trajectories reflect nutritional and metabolic status and are associated with postpartum hypertension risk.

Maternal body mass index (BMI) reflects nutritional status, metabolic adaptation, and energy balance during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Longitudinal BMI trajectories may therefore represent distinct nutritional-metabolic phenotypes with implications for subsequent cardiometabolic risk. However, such trajectory patterns extending from pregnancy into the postpartum period remain insufficiently characterized, particularly in Asian populations. This study aimed to identify distinct BMI trajectories from early pregnancy to 6 months postpartum and evaluate their associations with hypertensi

Birth weight, postnatal weight gain, and adult body composition in five low and middle income countries.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the associations between birth weight (BW), infancy, and childhood weight gain and adult body composition. METHODS: Subjects included participants of five birth cohort studies from low and middle income nations (Brazil, Guatemala, India, Philippines, and South Africa; n = 3432). We modeled adult body composition as a function of BW and conditional weight gain (CW), representing changes in weight trajectory relative to peers, in three age intervals (0-12 months, 12-24 months, 24 months-mid childhood). RESULTS: In 34 of 36 site- and sex-specific models, regression coeff

Growth Assessment in Preterm Children from Birth to Preschool Age.

Preterm infant growth is a major health indicator and needs to be monitored with an appropriate growth curve to achieve the best developmental and growth potential while avoiding excessive caloric intake that is linked to metabolic syndrome and hypertension later in life. New international standards for size at birth and postnatal growth for preterm infants are available and need implementation in clinical practice. A prospective, single center observational study was conducted to evaluate the in-hospital and long-term growth of 80 preterm infants with a mean gestational age of 33.3 ± 2.2 week

Association between placental single and mixed metals and offspring weight trajectories: a prospective birth cohort study.

There is insufficient knowledge about the cumulative metal exposure during the fetal period and the physical development trajectories of offspring, and the placenta is a suitable biological matrix for evaluating cumulative metal exposure. This study utilized data from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC), which includes 16 repeated weight measurements from 0 to 6 years. Placental tissue samples were analyzed for 17 metals. Graph-Based Trajectory Model (GBTM) was used to analyze and fit weight trajectories. The results found single-metal exposure analyses demonstrated that non-essential metals ars

Perinatal oxycodone exposure causes long-term sex-dependent changes in weight trajectory and sensory processing in adult mice.

RATIONALE: In utero opioid exposure is associated with lower weight and a neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) at birth, along with longer-term adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes and mood disorders. While NOWS is sometimes treated with continued opioids, clinical studies have not addressed if long-term neurobehavioral outcomes are worsened with continued postnatal exposure to opioids. In addition, pre-clinical studies comparing in utero only opioid exposure to continued post-natal opioid administration for withdrawal mitigation are lacking. OBJECTIVES: Here, we sought to understand the
