The co-occurrence of intimate partner violence and syphilis among pregnant women in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI) are epidemics that disproportionately affect women. This study determined IPV prevalence and the association between IPV and positive syphilis tests among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in three provinces in Bolivia. METHODS: We administered structured questionnaires to women after syphilis testing. The questionnaire included sociodemographic variables and four questions form the modified version of the Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS) to assess physical and sexual violence. RESULTS: Of 6002 women

Education as policy: the impact of education on marriage, contraception, and fertility in Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia.

Using data from the World Fertility and Demographic and Health Surveys of Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, we model the effects of education on three demographic outcomes: the timing of first sexual union, contraceptive use, and fertility. These effects are examined over time and across geographic areas using a multivariate framework. We find substantial improvements in female educational attainment over the last fifty years and a strong relationship between education and the demographic outcomes. Each successive increment in education is associated with declines in the marriage rate, increased co

Patterns and Determinants of Imported Malaria near the Argentina-Bolivia Border, 1977-2009.

In the Americas, the number of confirmed malaria cases decreased by 65.4% between 2000 and 2023, and malaria elimination is now in sight for many countries. Argentina is currently free of autochthonous malaria transmission. Until 2011, cases of malaria were concentrated in Northwestern Argentina, near the border with Bolivia, a country that continues to have malaria transmission. The Orán department (Salta province, Northwestern Argentina) had particularly high transmission near a main road that is a pathway for migration from Bolivia. The purpose of this study was to identify which factors be

Imported hepatopulmonary echinococcosis: first report of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (G1) in Bolivia.

Hepatopulmonary hydatidosis in young children is a rare and atypical presentation of Echinococcus granulosus infection. We report the first case of cystic echinococcosis caused by a microvariant of E. granulosus sensu stricto. Chemotherapy and systemic corticoids were administered before curative surgery was performed. Recurrence was not observed for more than 24 months of follow-up.

Maternal and congenital syphilis programmes: case studies in Bolivia, Kenya and South Africa.

Preventing congenital syphilis is not technically difficult, however operational difficulties limit the effectiveness of programmes in many settings. This paper reports on programmes in Bolivia, Kenya, and South Africa. All three countries have established antenatal syphilis control programmes. Early antenatal syphilis screening and management of positive cases were difficult to implement since most women presented for their first antenatal clinic visit after 6 months of pregnancy. Most women had rapid plasma reagin (RPR) testing; results were available on the same day in some clinics but took

Epilepsy, cysticercosis, and toxocariasis: a population-based case-control study in rural Bolivia.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between epilepsy and infection with Taenia solium and Toxocara canis with a case-control study, in the rural area of the Cordillera Province, Bolivia. METHODS: A preliminary two-phase door-to-door prevalence survey determined the prevalence of epilepsy and identified cases and control subjects. At least two control subjects per case were selected, matching on sex, age, and community of residence. Cases and control subjects were assessed serologically for antibodies against T. canis by ELISA and against T. solium by enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot

High endemicity of human fascioliasis between Lake Titicaca and La Paz valley, Bolivia.

Over a 6-year period, an epidemiological study of human infection by Fasciola hepatica in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano was carried out. Prevalences and intensities were analysed from coprological results obtained in 31 surveys performed in 24 localities and proved to be the highest known so far. The global prevalence was 15.4%, with local prevalences ranging from 0% to 68.2%. Significant differences between prevalence rates were detected and the highest prevalences were in subjects aged < 20 years. However, prevalences showed no gender difference. The global intensity (eggs per gram of faec

Women and congenital Chagas' disease in Santa Cruz, Bolivia: epidemiological and sociocultural aspects.

A total of 910 mothers attending the Percy Boland Maternity Institute in Santa Cruz were investigated. Of these mothers, 9.5% transmitted Chagas' disease to their children. It was observed that the frequency of congenital transmission in the city was influenced by certain socio-cultural factors relating to the mother, such as increased fertility, early age of motherhood and blood transfusions, and also by the movement of migrants from other endemic regions of Bolivia and from rural areas in the same department. It is postulated that the persistence of the disease in the urban setting is due to

Ethnoracial and rural-urban differences in female sterilization in Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, and Peru.

INTRODUCTION: In Latin America, 26 percent of women use sterilization to avert unwanted pregnancies. Although sterilization provides first-tier effectiveness, long-acting continuation over time, and life-long cost-benefit, previous research has documented persistent inequalities in access and use worldwide. METHODS: This study uses Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data for Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, and Peru (1986-2015), to explore ethnoracial, geographic, socioeconomic, individual, and reproductive differences in female sterilization [N (level-1 women) = 112,135; N (level-2 clusters) =

Increased adherence to ACOG diagnostic guidelines for HDP following a workshop in Bolivia, a LMIC.

OBJECTIVES: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) exert a heavy mortality burden in low- to middle-income countries (LMIC). ACOG revised HDP diagnostic guidelines to improve identifying pregnancies at greatest risk but whether they are used in LMIC is unknown. STUDY DESIGN: We held a workshop to review ACOG guidelines in La Paz, Bolivia (BO) and then reviewed prenatal, labor and delivery records for all HDP diagnoses and twice as many controls at its three largest delivery sites during the year before and the nine months after a workshop (n = 1376 cases, 2851 controls during the two perio

Assessment of a Leishmaniasis Reporting System in Tropical Bolivia Using the Capture-Recapture Method.

This study evaluates the level of underreporting of the National Program of Leishmaniasis Control (NPLC) in two communities of Cochabamba, Bolivia during the period 2013-2014. Montenegro skin test-confirmed cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) were identified through active surveillance during medical campaigns. These cases were compared with those registered in the NPLC by passive surveillance. After matching and cleaning data from the two sources, the total number of cases and the level of underreporting of the National Program were calculated using the capture-recapture analysis. Risk of babesiosis and anaplasmosis in different ecological zones of Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia.

A cross-sectional study was done of seroprevalence of Babesia bigemina, B.bovis, and Anaplasma marginale in cattle from eastern Bolivia, to characterise the risk of tick-borne disease in three ecological zones. Nineteen farms were sampled in the subtropical humid zone, 13 in the dry subtropical zone and nine in the lower western valleys of the Andean massif. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used. All three pathogens were widespread. For B. bovis, seroprevalences were high (75-78%) in the two subtropical zones which thus had low risk of disease from this infection; but the western vall

Low probability of transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi to humans by domiciliary Triatoma sordida in Bolivia.

The role of Triatoma sordida in the domestic transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi was assessed in 7 rural localities in Velasco Province, Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Tri. sordida, the only triatomine species identified in these localities, was found inside 58.0% of houses but not in large numbers (3.1 bugs per infested house on average). A total of 220 faecal samples from domiciliary bugs was examined microscopically and by the polymerase chain reaction for the presence of trypanosomes: 21.4% were infected. Analysis of blood meals of domiciliary Tri. sordida showed that humans were the com

[Epidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Bolivia. 1. Description of study zone and prevalence of the disease].

An epidemiological survey of tegumentary leishmaniasis (Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis) was carried out in three regions of Bolivia in the Andean foothill and Amazonian forest. It was based on the record of lesions and scars on all the inhabitants of selected representative villages. In the Yungas, an area cultivated from the XVIIth century, males and females are equally infested, mostly before they were 10 years old (65%); 48% of scars were on the head. In Alto Beni and Pando, areas covered with primary rain forest, males are significantly more affected than females. The majority of scars

Nocturnal Sleep Breathing Patterns in Healthy Adolescents Residing at Very High Altitudes in Bolivia.

Data on sleep and respiratory patterns among adolescents residing at very high altitude (> 3500 m) remain scarce, and altitude-related physiological differences may influence these parameters. Studying adolescents at different very high altitudes is crucial, as subtle environmental variations could affect sleep-related oxygenation and respiratory function. This study aimed to characterise sleep-related oxygenation and respiratory parameters in healthy adolescents native to two distinct very high-altitude environments. Overnight sleep polygraphy was performed in 163 healthy adolescents aged 13.

Putting safety first: ensuring safe vaccination practices during the 2006 rubella campaign in Bolivia.

Over 3 weeks in 2006, 3826083 persons were vaccinated against rubella during a national immunization campaign in Bolivia. This campaign was the largest mass immunization campaign ever conducted in the country. Therefore, in addition to strategic and micro-planning and financial and social mobilization, issues of safety (eg, safe injection practices and waste management) were at the forefront of campaign preparations. Waste management practices were promoted through guidelines, training, and implementation of locally appropriate solutions. These experiences show that, with detailed planning and

First nationwide survey on Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Bolivia: susceptibility profiles, resistome, and genomic epidemiology.

Information on the molecular epidemiology of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms is still limited in some South American countries. This study aims to decipher the population structure of 111 extensive drug-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates from a national study conducted in Bolivia during 2023-2024. The antibiotic susceptibility profiles were determined for 15 antipseudomonal agents. All isolates were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS), and, through bioinformatics analysis, sequence types (ST), clonal relatedness, and acquired mutation-driven and transferable
