The impact of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) program on radiation and tissue banking in Mexico.

Tissue banking started in Mexico in 1948-1949, when two bone banks were established, one at the Infantile Hospital of Mexico and other at the Central Military Hospital. Mexico has benefited for the implementation of the IAEA program since through it has been able to settle down and to consolidate the Tissue Bank at the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Nucleares ININ (National Institute for Nuclear Research). This is the only bank in Latin America that has a Quality Management System in force, certified under ISO 9001:2000 since August 1, 2003. The first tissue processed was amnion. The ma

Blood banking for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

The number of umbilical cord cell transplants is increasing worldwide. The results are comparable to allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in a large variety of hematological diseases that are curable by bone marrow transplantation and, so far, the incidence of graft-versus-host disease has been limited. The advantages of using cord blood are related to the high number of hematopoietic progenitors present in the circulation at birth and to the relative immune immaturity of the newborn. A project is described to establish a European cord blood bank in order to obtain related or unrelated, matc

Ethnicity, equity and public benefit: a critical evaluation of public umbilical cord blood banking in Australia.

Over the past decade umbilical cord blood (UCB) has been increasingly used as a source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for patients who require a HSC transplant but do not have an HLA-matched donor. It was anticipated that using UCB as an alternative source of HSCs would increase the chance of finding a donor, particularly for the otherwise underrepresented ethnic minority groups. To evaluate the effectiveness of the Australian public UCB banks to increase the ethnic diversity of available HSC donations, this paper analyses the ethnic diversity of the Sydney Cord Blood Bank (SCBB), compari

Osteochondral resurfacing of the knee joint with allograft. Clinical analysis of 33 cases.

This retrospective clinical study describes three years of experience with cryoprotected-cryopreserved allograft transplantation. During this period 33 knee joints were operated on for different reasons including osteoarthritis, osteochondritis dissecans and post-traumatic surface irregularity. The mean follow-up was nearly two years and the mean age of the patients was 48 years. The grafts were harvested and processed at the West Hungarian Tissue Bank according to the criteria promulgated by the European Association of Tissue Banks. All the operations were performed in the same way. Three typ

Cord blood banking.

Cord blood (CB) is a unique product, rich in haemopoietic stem cells (HSC), that is currently used in the transplantation setting to restore haemopoiesis. It restores haemopoietic stem cell function in patients suffering from malignancies, bone marrow (BM) failure disorders and inherited metabolic and immunological disorders. Related and unrelated CB donations have been successfully transplanted in both the paediatric and adult settings. CB, previously considered a waste product, can be collected from both vaginal deliveries and caesarean sections, either in utero or ex utero, at no risk to th

[Bone transplantation with total hip endoprosthesis for diffuse pigmented villonodular synovitis].

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign but aggressive disease of the synovium. If the hip is involved early destruction of the joint is common due to the tight structure of the capsule and arthroplasty is unavoidable in these cases. We implanted a cemented total hip replacement in a 17-year-old female patient who had histologically confirmed PVNS. Because of massive bony destruction in the acetabulum a reconstruction with homologous bone (two femoral heads) from the bone bank was necessary. After 5 years the bone transplant had become integrated, there were no signs of recurr

Prevalence of condylar morphological changes in individuals with class II malocclusion.

This observational, cross-sectional study with retrospective collection was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of morphological changes in mandibular condyles in individuals with class II malocclusion, classified according to different vertical growth patterns (brachyfacial, mesofacial, and dolichofacial), through cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Seventy CBCT images (140 mandibular condyles) were selected from individuals without orthodontic treatment, of both sexes, aged between 25 and 50 years. No statistically significant differences were found between facial patterns; however, there was

[Stem cells from cord blood: current status and future potential].

Umbilical cord blood is rich in hematopoietic stem cells. At birth, it can be collected, HLA-typed and stored. Cord blood is successfully used since over 10 years as source of transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells, in addition to bone marrow and mobilized peripheral blood stem cells. Allogeneic transplantations are performed between HLA-identical siblings and from HLA-matched unrelated donors. Most recipients of cord blood are children with Leukemia or genetic disorders, but also increasingly adolescents and adults. Based on the promising results, cord blood banks with kryopreserved, HLA

Cord blood banking in London: the first 1000 collections.

The London Cord Blood Bank was established with the aim of collecting, processing and storing 10000 unrelated stem cell donations for the significant number of children in the UK requiring transplantation, for whom a matched unrelated bone marrow donor cannot be found. Collection is performed at two hospitals by dedicated cord blood bank staff after delivery of the placenta. Mothers are interviewed regarding medical, ethnic and behavioural history by nurse counsellors and sign a detailed consent form. Donations are returned to the bank for processing. Volume reduction is undertaken by a simple

Biomechanical properties enhancement of gamma radiation-sterilized cortical bone using antioxidants.

Gamma radiation sterilization is the method used by the majority of tissue banks to reduce disease transmission from infected donors to recipients through bone allografts. However, many studies have reported that gamma radiation impairs the structural and mechanical properties of bone via formation of free radicals, the effect of which could be reduced using free radical scavengers. The aim of this study is to examine the radioprotective role of hydroxytyrosol (HT) and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on the mechanical properties of gamma-sterilized cortical bone of bovine femur, using three-point bend

Maxillary sinus: anatomy, physiology, surgery, and bone grafting related to implantology--eleven years of surgical experience (1979-1990).

The sinus is a pneumatic cavity of the facial skeleton within maxillary bone. It is very closely linked to the alveolar crest, the resorption of which, especially when tooth loss occurs, could cause a serious obstacle to oral implantology. It is therefore of great importance for this obstacle to be removed by adequate surgical procedures aimed at reducing the expanded volume of this cavity either partially or totally. Several grafting techniques involving autogenous bone (either alone, mixed with a bone-substituting biomaterial, or with insertion of only a biomaterial) are now available. The b

Disinfection of human musculoskeletal allografts in tissue banking: a systematic review.

Musculoskeletal allografts are typically disinfected using antibiotics, irradiation or chemical methods but protocols vary significantly between tissue banks. It is likely that different disinfection protocols will not have the same level of microorganism kill; they may also have varying effects on the structural integrity of the tissue, which could lead to significant differences in terms of clinical outcome in recipients. Ideally, a disinfection protocol should achieve the greatest bioburden reduction with the lowest possible impact on tissue integrity. A systematic review of three databases

Current status of umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

The number of umbilical cord blood transplants is increasing worldwide. At this time, it is important to evaluate their results and to compare the outcome of umbilical cord blood transplants with allogeneic bone marrow transplants. Data have been reported to the Eurocord Registry by multiple transplant centers. Close links have been established with the cord blood banks through Netcord. Bone marrow transplant data have been provided by transplant centers and through the European Blood and Marrow Transplant (EBMT) and International Bone Marrow Transplant Registries (IBMTR). Eurocord has analyze

The composition of human cortical allograft bone derived from FDA/AATB-screened donors.

Allograft human bone is an integral part of the surgeons' armamentarium and will continue to be for the near future. The intraoperative handling and/or mechanical properties are critical to its function. These properties are significantly influenced by the composition and the structure of the bone, which varies from donor to donor. Published studies of human bone composition use bone derived from a population that may differ from the population of qualified donors from which allograft bone is derived and may not well represent the pool of clinical allograft bone. This study investigated the co

Automatic adaptive parameterization in local phase feature-based bone segmentation in ultrasound.

Intensity-invariant local phase features based on Log-Gabor filters have been recently shown to produce highly accurate localizations of bone surfaces from three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound. A key challenge, however, remains in the proper selection of filter parameters, whose values have so far been chosen empirically and kept fixed for a given image. Since Log-Gabor filter responses widely change when varying the filter parameters, actual parameter selection can significantly affect the quality of extracted features. This article presents a novel method for contextual parameter selection tha

[Umbilical cord blood transplantation: acceptance of umbilical cord blood donation by pregnant patients].

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Umbilical cord blood is an alternative source for allogeneic transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from related and unrelated donors. It can easily be collected, cryopreserved and stored in cord blood banks for later use. In Switzerland, cord blood banks for related and unrelated stem cell transplantation are being established. The aim of the study was to evaluate previous knowledge of the possible medical use of cord blood and acceptance of cord blood banking in pregnant women. METHODS: We performed a prospective open study using a structured, anonymous questionna

Fusion outcomes of structural bone allograft in cervical and lumbar spine surgery: analysis of 147 patients over a decade of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: There has been a global increase in spinal fusion surgeries, driving the need for improved graft materials. Human structural allografts from tissue banks provide a safe, cost-effective and efficient alternative, circumventing donor site issues and reducing operating time. This study retrospectively analyses the long-term follow-up of human structural grafts used in various spinal fusion surgeries. The analysis aims to highlight that structural bone grafts are a viable option for spinal fusion. METHODS: The study included 147 patients over 18 years old who were treated for cervical
