BACKGROUND: As the general population is aging worldwide, the incidence of sarcopenia and osteoporosis is also rapidly increasing. Studies have found the link between sarcopenia and osteoporosis, but the relationship between sarcopenia and osteoporosis, especially bone microarchitecture, remains unclear.
AIMS: To investigate the relationship between components of sarcopenia (muscle mass, handgrip strength, and gait speed) and components of osteoporosis [bone mass measured by bone mineral density (BMD) and bone microarchitecture measured by trabecular bone score (TBS)] in Chinese subjects.

UNLABELLED: This study examined the bone mineral density (BMD) of 46 (median age 16.3, 8-29) survivors of autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Areal (g/m2) BMD was acquired with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and volumetric (g/cm3) BMD values were calculated. Abnormal BMD was identified in 24% (11/46) of survivors with areal measures and 22% (10/46) with volumetric measures. Comparison of areal and volumetric BMD revealed the measures were highly correlated (r = 0.73, p<0.001) but clinical diagnosis of osteopenia/osteoporosis were not consistent. Volumetric z-scores w

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic inflammatory disease of unknown aetiology. The pathogenesis of rheumatological findings and the status of bone metabolism in this disease are unknown. Inflammatory diseases may predispose to a decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) and there are many studies concerning osteoporosis in chronic inflammatory diseases.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate BMD and bone turnover markers in patients with BD.
METHODS: Thirty BD patients (17 male and 13 female patients, mean age 36.9+/-12.6 years) and a total of 30 age- and sex-matched he

Bladder exstrophy patients with or without augmentation have not been investigated according to metabolic bone problems, bone ages and growth, and development in details yet. We studied alterations in growth, bone ages, biochemistry of bone, bone mineral densities (BMD) of the forearm, neck of femur and lumbar vertebrae, blood gases, glomerular filtration rates (GFR), and electrolytes of 15 bladder exstrophy patients with augmentation and in those who had no augmentation. In six patients, a sigmoid colon was used for bladder augmentation and one patient underwent a ureterosigmoidostomy. Growth

Because lifelong exposure to estrogen is a strong determinant of bone mass, we asked whether metabolic conversion of estrogen to either inactive or active metabolites would reflect postmenopausal bone mineral density (BMD) and rate of bone loss. Biochemical markers of inactive estrogen metabolites, urinary 2-hydroxyestrogen (2OHE1) and 2-methoxyestrogen (2MeOE1), and active metabolites, urinary 16alpha-hydroxyestrone (16alphaOHE1), estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3), were determined in 71 untreated, healthy postmenopausal women (age, 47-59 years) followed prospectively for 1 year. Urinary 2MeOE1

Some studies have indicated that the risk of fragility fractures in men increases as bone mineral levels decrease, but there is an overlap in the bone mineral density (BMD) measurements between patients with or without fractures. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the biomechanical competence of trabecular bone is dependent not only on the absolute amount of bone present but also on the trabecular microarchitecture. In the present study, 108 men (mean age 52.1 years) with lumbar osteopenia (T score < -2.5) were recruited to examine the relationships between BMD, architectural changes in t

We evaluated the pattern of osteoporosis after spinal cord injury, determined the time-frame of the changes, and elucidated the relationship among parathyroid hormone levels, biochemical markers of bone formation, and the pattern of bone mass loss. We included 176 subjects with spinal cord injury and 62 subjects without spinal cord injury as controls in the study. Bone mineral density of the spine and the proximal femur was measured. The participants' age, level of injury, and length of time since injury were compared with the nonspinal cord-injured controls and with each other. Serum levels o

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Glucocorticoid replacement is the most effective therapy for patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). It has been reported that excessive steroid therapy leads to bone loss and osteoporosis, but it is uncertain whether steroid replacement therapy affects bone turnover and bone mineral density (BMD) in adult patients with CAH.
DESIGN: Case-control study: patients with CAH were compared to normal subjects, individually matched for age and body weight.
PATIENTS: Eleven patients, aged 19-65 years, were evaluated in this study. The age at diagnosis of CAH was

Red-colored bones were first found in Guishan goats in the 1980s, and they were subsequently designated red-boned Guishan goats. However, the difference remains unclear between the bone mineral density (BMD) or elemental composition in bones between red-boned Guishan goats and common Guishan goats. Analysis of femoral bone samples by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry revealed an increase in bone mineral density in the femoral diaphysis and distal femur of red-boned Guishan goats at 18 and 36 months of age. The data revealed that BMD i

INTRODUCTION: Canadian Aboriginal women are at increased risk of fracture compared with the general population.
HYPOTHESIS: There is disproportionately reduced bone density in Aboriginal women as compared to white females of similar age.
METHODS: A random age-stratified (25-39, 40-59 and 60-75) sample of Aboriginal women (n=258) and white women (n=181) was recruited. All subjects had calcaneus and distal forearm bone density measurements, and urban participants (n=397 [90.4%]) also had measurements of the lumbar spine, hip and total body.
RESULTS: Unadjusted measurements were similar in the

INTRODUCTION: Friedreich's Ataxia (FRDA) is a progressive neurological disorder caused by mutations in both alleles of the frataxin (FXN) gene. Impaired bone health is a complication of other disorders affecting mobility, but there is little information regarding bone health in FRDA.
METHODS: Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan-based assessments of areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in individuals with FRDA were abstracted from four studies at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Disease outcomes, including the modified FRDA Rating Scale (mFARS), were abstracted from the FRD

BACKGROUND: Current evidence suggests that dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, the conventional method defining osteoporosis, is underutilized and, when used, may underestimate patient risk for skeletal fragility. It has recently been suggested that other imaging modalities may better estimate bone quality, such as the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score which also may assess vertebral compression fracture risk in patients with spine metastases.
PURPOSE: To evaluate whether VBQ score is predictive of fragility fractures in a population with pre-

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with increased fracture risk and skeletal deformities. The impact of CKD on volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and cortical dimensions during growth is unknown. Tibia quantitative computed tomographic scans were obtained in 156 children with CKD [69 stages 2 to 3, 51 stages 4 to 5, and 36 stage 5D (dialysis)] and 831 healthy participants aged 5 to 21 years. Sex-, race-, and age- or tibia length-specific Z-scores were generated for trabecular BMD (TrabBMD), cortical BMD (CortBMD), cortical area (CortArea) and endosteal circumference (EndoC). Greate

In recent years, the problem of osteoporosis is increasingly raised in children as well as adults both as a primary disorder and as secondary results to various diseases, medications, and lifestyle issues. On the other hand, molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis have been elucidated in several sclerosing disorders contributing to our understanding of basic biology of bone metabolism. In this chapter, we reviewed the recent progress on the method to evaluate BMD in growing period and etiologies of abnormal BMD in children.

Bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar vertebrae (L(1)-L(4)) was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in 20 children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis, and its results were compared with bone biopsy and biochemical parameters. Biopsy specimens provided evidence of hyperparathyroid bone disease in eight cases (40%), and low bone turnover in 12 (60%). For BMD, expressed as Z-scores relative to normal, median Z-scores were -1.05 (range -2.36 to 1.06) for hyperparathyroid patients and -1.05 (range -4.40 to -0.03) for low bone turnover patients, with no statistical diffe

Osteoporosis is a disease caused by compromised bone strength, and individuals with a high peak bone mass at a young age are likely to have a high bone mass in old age. To identify the clinical determinants of peak bone mass in young adult women, 418 southern Chinese women, aged 20-39 years, were studied. Low bone mass was defined as areal bone mineral density (aBMD) Z-score < -1 at either the spine or total hip. Within the cohort, 62 (19.0%) and 86 (26.4%) women had low aBMD at the spine and hip, respectively. Regression model analysis revealed that low body weight (<44 kg) was associated wit

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of different clodronate regimens in postmenopausal osteoporosis.
METHODS: In groups of 20, 60 women were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: oral calcium, 1000 mg/day; oral calcium plus oral clodronate, 400 mg/day; oral calcium plus oral clodronate, 400 mg/day for 30 days, followed by a 60-day period of calcium supplement alone. This last regimen was repeated four times in the 12-month study period.
RESULTS: Patients who received calcium alone showed a decline in spinal bone mass, both after 6 and 12 months (P < .03 and P < .005, respectivel
