Disseminated cryptococcosis infection typically occurs in immunocompromised patients, often through pneumonia or meningoencephalitis. Cases in immunocompetent patients are uncommon, and presentation in either bone or adrenal glands are rare. We describe a case of a previously healthy immunocompetent 50-year-old woman who presented with lytic bone lesions followed by meningoencephalitis, dermatologic involvement, and adrenal insufficiency from disseminated cryptococcus. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of an immunocompetent patient with cryptococcus in the combination of blood, b

Hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL) is a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma, marked by liver, spleen, and bone marrow sinusoidal infiltration, with an aggressive clinical course, which represents a difficult diagnostic task for clinicians and pathologists. Another equally severe and challenging condition is the hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (also called hemophagocytic syndrome [HS]), which is often associated with hematologic malignancies and infectious diseases. The authors report the case of a 56-year-old woman diagnosed with HSTCL based on bone marrow aspirate flow cytometry and skin biopsy.

Body surface tissues, such as the oral cavity, contact directly with the external environment and are continuously exposed to microbial insults. Cathelicidins are a family of antimicrobial peptides that are found in mammalian species. Humans and mice have only one cathelicidin. Cathelicidins are expressed in a variety of surface tissues. In addition, they are abundantly expressed in bone and bone marrow. Infectious stimuli upregulate the expression of cathelicidins, which play sentinel roles in allowing the tissues to fight against microbial challenges. Cathelicidins disrupt membranes of micro

In order to inhibit pathogenic complications and to enhance animal and poultry growth, antibiotics have been extensively used for many years. Antibiotics applications not only affect target pathogens but also intestinal beneficially microbes, inducing long-lasting changes in intestinal microbiota associated with diseases. The application of antibiotics also has many other side effects like, intestinal barrier dysfunction, antibiotics residues in foodstuffs, nephropathy, allergy, bone marrow toxicity, mutagenicity, reproductive disorders, hepatotoxicity carcinogenicity, and antibiotic-resistant

Periodontal diseases, some of the most common infectious diseases seen in humans, are characterized by gingival inflammation, as well as loss of connective tissue and bone from around the roots of the teeth, which leads to eventual tooth exfoliation. In the past decade, the association of periodontal diseases with the development of systemic diseases has received increasing attention. Although a number of studies have presented evidence of close relationships between periodontal and systemic diseases, the majority of findings are limited to epidemiological studies, while the etiological detail

Bone scintigraphy is a sensitive tool to evaluate the musculoskeletal system in children. Hybrid imaging using computed tomography (CT) in combination with conventional bone scan and single photon emission computed tomography improves specificity and diagnostic accuracy. It also improves laboratory efficiency and may save the patient an additional visit to the hospital for a separate cross-sectional imaging study. We have found this technique to be particularly helpful in localizing a cause for pain in children who are nonverbal and to better delineate small bone and soft-tissue lesions that c

Thirty broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) were performed in order to investigate 30 infectious episodes in immunocompromised children. Twenty patients were previously treated by high-dose chemotherapy and autologous bone marrow transplantation and 6 other patients by conventional methods. A specific etiologic diagnosis was obtained in 16 of 30 episodes (56%), 22 microorganisms were identified by BAL. The most frequently involved microorganism was Candida albicans and the other agents were as follows: 3 cytomegalovirus, 2 Pneumococcus, 2 Pneumocystis carinii, 1 Aspergillosis, 1 syncytial respiratory

Congenital syphilis is re-emerging in modern society. The pediatric radiologist may contribute to its early diagnosis. A case of unusual bone involvement with fracture of the olecranon and facial bone lesions is described; the condition had to be differentiated from the "battered child syndrome". The problem of congenital syphilis as an infectious disease versus bone dystrophy is also discussed.

Bone involvement of syphilis can be observed in tertiary and congenital syphilis. It is infrequent during the secondary stage. The skull is the most affected bone in secondary syphilis, and its most frequent form of presentation is proliferative osteitis. If the skull is affected, headache is usual and can be as intense as in meningitis. Osteolyitic lesions may be seen in complimentary imaging studies, with a moth eaten aspect. These lesions raise concern over a number of differential diagnoses, among which are infectious, inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. The definitive diagnosis is made

We studied bone lesion alterations in three patients with diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis (DCL) by imaging exams (radiography and scintigraphy) and histopathology. Two patients had bone lesions of distal extremities of hands and feet, and one infiltrating plaques in the skin. The study was conducted at three specialized centers (Presidente Dutra Hospital/Nucleus of Tropical Pathology, UFMA-MA; Gonçalo Moniz Research Center-FIOCRUZ-BA; Laboratory of Pathology of Infectious Diseases (LIM-50), University of São Paulo, SP). Three-phase bone scintigraphy demonstrated high sensitivity and specificit

Various imaging modalities are used in diagnosis of acute and chronic infectious endogenous osteomyelitis and exogenous ostitis. The pathophysiological changes of osteomyelitis/ostitis in the bone and surrounding soft tissue are known. Findings in plain film radiography show these changes only in relatively advanced stages of disease. Hence, plain film radiographs are useful as a basic imaging modality by excluding other differentials and as a follow-up modality under therapy. Ultrasound-using advanced technology--offers diagnostic help in acute osteomyelitis, especially in infants. The variou

Granulomas in bone marrow are an infrequent finding related to diverse disease. We reviewed 8057 bone marrow studies made over a period of 10.5 years, confirming the presence of granulomas in 40 patients. Global incidence was 0.50% and annual incidence 3.80 cases/yr. Because of the non-specificity of the morphological data, the diagnostic significance of the finding is limited, but it does serve to narrow the field of etiological possibilities. Associated disease was demonstrated in 82.5%, infectious diseases being the most common (tuberculosis, brucellosis, typhoid fever and kala-azar). Two p

Oral inflammatory diseases such as apical periodontitis are common bacterial infectious diseases that may affect the periapical alveolar bone tissues. A protective process occurs simultaneously with the inflammatory tissue destruction, in which mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play a primary role. However, a systematic and precise description of the cellular and molecular composition of the microenvironment of bone affected by inflammation is lacking. In this study, we created a single-cell atlas of cell populations that compose alveolar bone in healthy and inflammatory disease states. We investi

Apical periodontitis (AP) is an infectious disease that causes periapical tissue inflammation and bone destruction. Ferroptosis, a novel type of regulated cell death, is closely associated with inflammatory diseases and the regulation of bone homeostasis. However, the exact involvement of ferroptosis in the bone loss of AP is not fully understood. In this study, human periapical tissues were collected, and a mouse model was established to investigate the role of ferroptosis in AP. Colocalization staining revealed that ferroptosis in macrophages contributes to the inflammatory bone loss associa

Adequate interpretation of a cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine MR imaging examination includes a careful evaluation of the bone marrow. Detecting an abnormality in bone marrow may cause a diagnostic dilemma because the marrow in the spine can vary in appearance according to the patient's age, and can be affected by infectious, inflammatory, metabolic, and neoplastic processes. Its appearance can be affected as well by underlying degenerative disc disease, trauma, and numerous iatrogenic therapies, including vertebroplasty, radiation therapy, and medications. In addition to conventional MR im

A 29-year-old male patient underwent an autologous bone marrow transplant. He was initially diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and treated with 12 cycles of chemotherapy. Three months later, he presented with intermittent fever and underwent an MRI scan and a brain biopsy. Eventually, he was diagnosed with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. For effective treatment and a plan of action, such cases necessitate multidisciplinary board meetings with input from experts in surgery, pathology, cancer, and infectious diseases.

The incidental discovery of neutropenia during routine blood counting represents a common problem for clinicians. However, there are no reported data of systematic evaluations of adults with incidental neutropenia. As such, this was the aim of the present study. Ninety-seven adults with incidental neutropenia were submitted to a clinical and laboratory approach including medical evaluation, complete blood count (CBC), serial CBC, direct and indirect antiglobulin test, bone marrow smear and biopsy, assessment of folate, vitamin B12 and iron status, serum liver enzymes, serum proteins, serologic
