hyposplenism increases the risk of life-threatening infection with encapsulated bacteria. however, literature review revealed that hyposplenism is also a risk factor for disseminated fungal infection. here, we report a case of individual who presented with pyrexia of unknown origin and had splenectomy for hemolytic anemia and later he found to have disseminated fungal infection on bone marrow examination. this case emphasized the likelihood of disseminated fungal infection in an asplenic patient and also importance of bone marrow trephine in prompt diagnosis and management of patient.

HIV infection is associated with a wide range of hematological abnormalities. The peripheral blood findings and the morphological abnormalities in the bone marrow can simulate myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloproliferative disorders, and T cell lymphoma. We compared the cellular composition of the first 1.0 ml volume bone marrow aspirate with that of an aliquot from the total bone marrow harvest at the end of the procedure in 17 healthy bone marrow donors. Each sample was assayed for its content of red blood cells, nucleated cells, CD2+, CD4+, CD8+, CD19+, HLA-DR+, CD56+, CD13+, CD33+, CD34+ and KiM8+ cells and CFU-GM. The study of cytograms of the marrow of mice with experimental T. spiralis and T. pseudospiralis invasion of 1 to 60 days revealed the marked activation of granulocytes and lymphoid cell proliferation with the much lower response of erythroid cells. The maximal response occurred at 21-35 days of invasion with subsequent diminution. In mice experimentally invaded with T. pseudospiralis the response of the marrow was less pronounced, but the period of active cell proliferation was prolonged.

Cancer of the breast was the most frequent neoplasm metastatic in bone marrow in this study of 2,878 bone-marrow examinations. INTRODUCTION: Cytopenia is a common hematologic finding in patients with HCV infection. Only a few studies have addressed bone marrow (BM) morphologic findings in these patients. No systemic study has been performed in these patients with liver transplantation (LT).

Bone marrow (BM) trepanobiopsy imprints were studied in 85 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) and they were compared with aspirates. All the patients were divided into 2 groups, depending on the presence (n=17) and absence (n=65) of BM lesion established on the basis of the data of histological and immunohistochemical studies of trepanobiopsy specimens.
