This article describes factors affecting the accuracy of transpedicle screw placements performed with the Renaissance robot-guided system and reviews the relevant literature. Between January 2013 and January 2015, Renaissance robot-guided spinal surgery was performed in 125 patients at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The surgeries included 662 transpedicle screw implants and 49 Kirschner wire (K-wire) reimplants performed by intraoperative repositioning. The lead author evaluated the accuracy of all K-wire insertions and classified their accuracy into 3 categories r

PURPOSE: The development of small cannulated screws permitted minimally invasive percutaneous fixation of acute scaphoid fractures. There are known mechanical advantages to increased screw length and central screw placement, as well as documented deleterious effects of screw malposition, including articular protrusion, proximal pole fracture, and nonunion. The purpose of this study was to compare 2 methods of calculating a screw axis accessible via a volar surgical approach.
METHODS: To prevent screw protrusion through the surface of the scaphoid, we required the central screw axis to be cont

The authors compare their results of the management of the pseudoarthrosis of the navicular bone of the wrist with those reported in the literature. The study group included 21 patients and the Synthes 3.0 mm was applied. The authors concentrate on both technical and biological aspects of the therapy, mainly on an appropriate choice of the procedure, quality of the management of the surfaces of the pseudoarthrosis and significance of correct introduction of the device. The rate of the healed pseudoarthroses reached 85.7% in their patient trial group. They conclude that the main prerequisites f

We examined twenty-one patients in whom an established nonunion of the scaphoid had been treated with Herbert-screw fixation with bone-grafting; our purpose was to determine the long-term morbidity of the procedure (at an average of forty-eight months; range, seventeen to fifty-five months). According to the modified scaphoid outcome scoring system, eighteen patients had a good or excellent result. No patient had failure of the hardware. Radial deviation was significantly decreased (an average of 17 degrees; 55 percent) compared with that of the contralateral wrist (p = 0.02). The other ranges

The intraoral cortical bone screw fixation technique carries many advantages over traditional methods of intermaxillary fixation. Simplicity of the technique, reduction of operative time, and reduction of risk of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis make this an important technique in the armamentarium of busy facial trauma surgeons. Since 1992, 45 mandibular fractures in 29 patients treated with the intraoral cortical bone screw technique for intermaxillary fixation were retrospectively analyzed. At our institution, this technique has become the workhorse method of repai

The common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis is spinal tuberculosis (TB). Spinal TB can lead to vertebral damage, resulting in kyphosis and neurological impairment. Debridement, bone grafting, and reconstruction are common surgical treatments for spinal TB. Spinal TB patients with anterior-middle spinal column destruction are more likely to experience loosening of internal fixation. Cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screw fixation reduces this complication probability because the entrance trajectory of CBT screws in the sagittal and axial planes substantially interacts with the cortical bone an

The incidence of screw loosening, migration, and pullout caused by the insufficient screw-bone fixation stability is relatively high in clinical practice. To solve this issue, the auxetic unit-based porous bone screw (AS) has been put forward in our previous work. Its favorable auxetic effect can improve the primary screw-bone fixation stability after implantation. However, porous structure affected the fatigue behavior and in vivo longevity of bone screw. In this study, in vitro fatigue behaviors and in vivo osseointegration performance of the re-entrant unit-based titanium auxetic bone screw

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Learning a new technique in neurosurgery is a big challenge especially for trainees. In recent years, simulations and simulators got into the focus as a teaching tool. Our objective is to propose a simulator for placement of cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screws to improve results and reduce complications.
METHODS: We have created a platform consisting of a sawbone navigated with a 3D fluoroscope to familiarize our trainees and consultants with CBT technique and later implement it in our department. Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) and Phys

Each year, millions of Americans suffer bone fractures, often requiring internal fixation. Current devices, like plates and screws, are made with permanent metals or resorbable polymers. Permanent metals provide strength and biocompatibility, but cause long-term complications and may require removal. Resorbable polymers reduce long-term complications, but are unsuitable for many load-bearing applications. To mitigate complications, degradable magnesium (Mg) alloys are being developed for craniofacial and orthopedic applications. Their combination of strength and degradation make them ideal for

Stable fixation of small proximal pole nonunions of the scaphoid by conventional techniques of bone grafting remains difficult. Because of this, long-lasting immobilisation is necessary. Treatment by retrograde Herbert-screw fixation offers the possibility of stable osteosynthesis resulting in shorter immobilisation. Even in case of avascular proximal fragments, it allows healing of the nonunion. We report on the 29 months follow-up of 23 patients treated in this manner showing bony consolidation in 17 cases (74%). Four patients demonstrated fibrous nonunion with minor symptoms, and in two pat
