Cross-border collaboration for neglected tropical disease efforts-Lessons learned from onchocerciasis control and elimination in the Mano River Union (West Africa).

Diseases don't respect borders, so efforts to control and eliminate diseases must also be flexible and adaptable enough to effectively reach the populations that live in the areas around national frontiers. Onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness is a tropical disease that has historically affected millions of people in 35 countries in Africa and Latin America. In Africa, programs and partnerships to address river blindness through mass drug administration have been active for more than 25 years. While in many cases the disease is found in isolated foci that fall entirely within nati

Serologic examination of aborted ovine and bovine fetal fluids for the diagnosis of border disease, bluetongue, bovine viral diarrhea, and leptospiral infections.

Fetal serum from most of 994 bovine and 553 ovine aborted fetuses was tested serologically for antibodies to border disease (BD), bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), and bluetongue (BT) viruses, and to Leptospira sp., and the results were compared with the results of isolation procedures, fluorescent antibody tests (FAT), and histologic examinations of the same fetuses. Antibodies to BT virus were not found in any of the 994 bovine and 553 ovine fetuses. Antibody titers to BVD virus were present in 39 of 966 bovine fetuses tested, and BVD virus was detected in 4 of the 39. Four of 74 fetuses in which

Expression of the common acute lymphoblastic leukaemia antigen (CALLA gp100) in the brush border of normal jejunum and jejunum of patients with coeliac disease.

Expression of the gp100 common acute lymphoblastic leukaemia antigen (CALLA) was studied in the mucosa of the gut by means of indirect immunofluorescence on cryostat tissue sections with a panel of eight monoclonal antibodies to common acute lymphoblastic leukaemia antigen (anti-CALLA antibodies) and two antibodies to non-CALLA leukaemic antigens. Expression of CALLA was absent from normal stomach epithelium, adult and fetal colonic epithelium of normal histology, and colonic epithelium from patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. By contrast, all eight anti-CALLA antibodies gave

Chinese border disease virus strain JSLS12-01 infects piglets and down-regulates the antibody responses of classical swine fever virus C strain vaccination.

During 2012 and 2013, several border disease virus (BDV) strains were identified from Chinese goat and sheep herds. At the same time, pigs from the same areas were found to be seropositive to BDV by ELISA, without showing clinical signs (unpublished data). To examine the susceptibility of pigs to the Chinese BDV strains, BDV isolate JSLS12-01, isolated from naturally infected sheep, was used to infect pigs. Antibody responses, viremia, clinical signs and pathological changes of the infected animals were examined. It confirmed that the current BDV strain could infect the domestic pigs, the anim

Knowledge, Attitude and Practices Towards Foot and Mouth Disease Among Farmers and Veterinary Practitioners in Selected Border Regions of Pakistan Adjoining to Afghanistan.

This study was conducted to look into the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of farmers, animal wholesalers and veterinary practitioners on foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the border area of Pakistan adjoining Afghanistan. Nearly half (41%) of the farmers understood the name of the disease or were aware of its incidence in their neighbourhood. The majority of farmers were able to identify the clinical signs (77.9% salivation, 74% tongue ulcers, 73.4% gum lesions, 71% hoof lesions) of FMD in their livestock. Over half of the farmers (54%) preferred not to purchase cattle from unidentified

Points of entry dynamics: understanding the cross-border threats for Ebola virus disease and COVID-19 in Ghana using a logic model approach.

BACKGROUND: The influx of people across the national borders of Ghana has been of interest and concern in the public health and national security community in recent times due to the low capacity for the prevention and management of epidemics and other public health risks. Although the international health regulations (IHR) stipulate core public health capacities for designated border facilities such as international airports, seaports, and ground crossings, contextual factors that influence the attainment of effective public health measures and response capabilities remain understudied. Sero-epidemiological profiling of duck viral hepatitis, avian influenza, and Newcastle disease in transboundary waterfowl populations along the Indonesia-Malaysia border of West Kalimantan.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Waterfowl, particularly Anas platyrhynchos and Cairina moschata, are important reservoirs and amplifiers of transboundary viral diseases, including Duck viral hepatitis (DVH), Avian influenza (AI), and Newcastle disease (ND). Despite their epidemiological significance, data from the Indonesia-Malaysia border region of West Kalimantan remain scarce. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and epidemiological patterns of DVH, AI, and ND in waterfowl populations in this high-risk transboundary interface. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in

Pathogenesis of experimental lupus nephritis: a role for anti-basement membrane and anti-tubular brush border antibodies in murine chronic graft-versus-host disease.

The pathogenesis of renal involvement was studied in murine chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), which is a model for human systemic lupus erythematosus. GVHD was induced by four i.v. injections of lymphocytes from DBA/2 donor mice into (C57BL/10 x DBA/2)F1 hybrids at 3-4-day intervals. Two weeks after the first injection, antibodies were found to have been deposited in the mesangium and along the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) in a linear arrangement, which changed to a granular pattern after 6-8 weeks. In this stage, large electron-dense complexes were present both subepithelially a

Case Report: Unicentric Castleman disease at the superior border of the pancreatic body mimicking a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor: a case report and literature review.

Peripancreatic unicentric Castleman disease is rare and may mimic a primary pancreatic neoplasm because it often presents as a well-circumscribed hypervascular mass. We report a 26-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes mellitus in whom an incidentally detected upper abdominal mass was initially considered to arise from the pancreatic body. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a sharply marginated hypervascular lesion with diffusion restriction at the superior border of the pancreatic body, leading to a preoperative suspicion of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. What did we learn from preparing for cross-border transmission of Ebola virus disease into a complex humanitarian setting - The Republic of South Sudan?

BACKGROUND: Following the West Africa Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak (2013-2016), WHO developed a preparedness checklist for its member states. This checklist is currently being applied for the first time on a large and systematic scale to prepare for the cross border importation of the ongoing EVD outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo hence the need to document the lessons learnt from this experience. This is more pertinent considering the complex humanitarian context and weak health system under which some of the countries such as the Republic of South Sudan are implementing their

Integrating genomic evolution and reported outbreak occurrence in foot-and-mouth disease in Asia: Cross-border lineage connectivity and exploratory prediction of reported outbreak occurrence.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) remains endemic across much of Asia and continues to threaten livestock production, trade, and transboundary disease control. To clarify how viral evolution, geographic connectivity, and reported outbreak occurrence can be interpreted at the regional scale, we analyzed 489 Asian foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) complete genomes retrieved from GenBank using phylogenetic, molecular clock, recombination, and fixed-tree Bayesian stochastic search variable selection (BSSVS) approaches, and compared these results with exploratory presence-background modeling implement

Foodborne diseases do not respect borders: Zoonotic pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria in food products of animal origin illegally imported into the European Union.

Globalisation, international trade and the ever-growing flow of goods and people enable animal diseases and zoonotic pathogens to travel worldwide. The risk of reintroducing previously eradicated animal diseases into the European Union is omnipresent as considerable amounts of food products of animal origin (POAO) from endemic countries are continuously imported legally and illegally into the EU. Additionally, these products may be potential vectors for emerging foodborne zoonoses, which are of public health concern due to their significant morbidity and mortality rates. This review summarises

Effect of greater trochanteric epiphysiodesis after femoral varus osteotomy for lateral pillar classification B and B/C border Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease: A retrospective observational study.

This is a retrospective observational study. Greater trochanteric epiphysiodesis (GTE) has been recommended to prevent Trendelenburg gait and limitation of the hip joint motion due to trochanteric overgrowth after femoral varus osteotomy (FVO) in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD). However, capital femoral physeal arrest frequently occurs in patients with severe disease (lateral pillar C), so GTE might not be as effective in these patients. The aim of this study was to compare trochanteric growth inhibition due to GTE after FVO between 2 age groups (<8 or >8 years) in patients with lateral pill

Rotational open-wedge osteotomy improves treatment outcomes for patients older than eight years with Legg-Calve-Perthes disease in the modified lateral pillar B/C border or C group.

PURPOSE: Since 2003, we have been performing rotational open-wedge osteotomy (ROWO) for older children with severe Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD). We compared the treatment outcomes before and after the introduction of ROWO for patients aged ≥ eight years, classified in the modified lateral pillar B/C border or C group. METHODS: Before the introduction of ROWO, conservative treatment (non-weight bearing [NWB]) was performed for all cases between 1986 and 2002, whereby there were 34 hips (NWB group). The median patient age, at the first visit, was 9.1 years. According to the lateral pillar

Evaluation of Infection Prevention and Control Readiness at Frontline Health Care Facilities in High-Risk Districts Bordering Ebola Virus Disease-Affected Areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - Uganda, 2018.

Infection prevention and control (IPC) in health care facilities is essential to protecting patients, visitors, and health care personnel from the spread of infectious diseases, including Ebola virus disease (Ebola). Patients with suspected Ebola are typically referred to specialized Ebola treatment units (ETUs), which have strict isolation and IPC protocols, for testing and treatment (1,2). However, in settings where contact tracing is inadequate, Ebola patients might first seek care at general health care facilities, which often have insufficient IPC capacity (3-6). Before 2014-2016, most Eb
