William Hooker and his son Joseph were famous as botanists and as the creators of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. Joseph was famous also as the friend and mentor of Charles Darwin. But there was another brother, a little older than Joseph, also a doctor and naturalist. He went to Jamaica in the interests of his health and soon died there of yellow fever. His life was short and tragic with a medical conundrum at its end but its story also illustrates many of the beliefs and concerns that preoccupied doctors in this early Victorian era. It also illustrates the close relationship between medici

Charles Bonnet (1720-1792) was an eminent naturalist and philosopher whose contributions to botany and philosophy were highly regarded and honored by his contemporaries in the scientific community of his era in France and England. In1760 he first described and analyzed formed visual hallucinations experienced by his grandfather. The syndrome was named after Bonnet in 1937 by George de Mosier, another native of Geneva, Switzerland.

INTRODUCTION: Tabernaemontana is a genus of plants traditionally used to treat various diseases, such as syphilis. Many cytotoxic indole alkaloids were isolated and characterized from plants of this genus, suggesting their potential applications as chemotherapeutical drugs or drug leads. Nonetheless, the Malaysian native species Tabernaemontanapolyneura was relatively unknown. This study provides an overview of the botany, ethnobotany, phytochemistry, and in silico ADMET analysis of cytotoxic alkaloids isolated from T. polyneura.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using

This article charts the history of a scientific career that began in the plant sciences and is ending in research on the placenta-brain axis and on the developmental origins of the mammalian placenta. In the middle was the characterization of uteroferrin and interferon-τ, the role of the latter in maternal recognition of pregnancy, and the development of a commercial pregnancy test for dairy cows. The article also emphasizes the roles personal upheavals and happenchance played in shaping a professional life and dealing with an incident of scientific malfeasance that threatened it. The article

This is a tribute to a truly inspirational plant biologist, Prof. John A. Raven, FRS, FRSE (25th June 1941- 23rd May 2024), who died at the age of 82. He was a leader in the field of evolution and physiology of algae and land plants. His research touched on many areas including photosynthesis, ion transport, carbon utilisation, mineral use, such as silicon, iron and molybdenum, the evolution of phytoplankton, the evolution of root systems, the impact of global change, especially on the acidification of the oceans, carbon gain and water use in early land plants, and ways of detecting extraterre

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) ratio (N:P) has been widely used as a threshold for identifying nutrient limitations in terrestrial plants; however, the associated reliability has not been well assessed.
METHODS: The uncertainty of nutrient limitations caused by the N:P threshold was evaluated using two approaches: fertilization experiments synthesized across multiple ecosystems; and random sampling simulation of the impacts of different nutrient sufficiencies and deficiencies.
KEY RESULTS: The fertilization experiment data indicated that the types of nutrient limitat

Few families have had an impact on medicine to equal that of the Meckel family. Johann Friedrich Meckel the Elder is of special interest to the neurosciences, given that his dissertation on the fifth cranial nerve included the first description of the arachnoid space investing the trigeminal nerve into the middle fossa. He was interested in neuroanatomy, along with botany and pathology of the inguinal hernia and the lymphatic system. His mentors included the eminent Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) and August Buddaeus (1695-1753), and he extended his own influence on the work of Giovanni Morgag

Patrick Browne (ca. 1720-1790), a native of County Mayo, Ireland, studied medicine in Paris, graduated from the University of Rheims in 1742, and briefly continued his studies at Leiden before practising as a doctor at St Thomas's Hospital, London. Subsequently, he lived for many years in the Caribbean, in Antigua, Jamaica, Saint Croix and Montserrat, but retired to County Mayo in 1771. Browne published The civil and natural history of Jamaica in 1756 a most significant work in terms of botanical nomenclature, which included new names for 104 genera, and he promised also a volume of medical es

The life cycles of sexually reproducing animals and flowering plants begin with male and female gametes and their fusion to form a zygote. Selection at this earliest stage is crucial for offspring quality and raises similar evolutionary issues, yet zoology and botany use dissimilar approaches. There are striking parallels in the role of prezygotic competition for sexual selection on males, cryptic female choice, sexual conflict, and against selfish genetic elements and genetic incompatibility. In both groups, understanding the evolution of sex-specific and reproductive traits will require an a

John Fothergill was a remarkable but largely forgotten physician, plant collector, and philanthropist, born of Quaker parents in Yorkshire. This article summarizes the legacy of his work on trigeminal neuralgia and migrainous "sick headaches," and his seminal studies on angina, scarlatina, and diptheria. He became hugely influential and fostered both education and many medical careers in Britain and America.

INTRODUCTION: Medicinal plants and phytocompounds targeting skeletal muscle wasting in humans are under-represented in the majority of databases reporting plant/herb-diseases association. However, a large body of literature exists wherein plant extracts or active pharmaceutical ingredients thereof demonstrate potential benefit in skeletal muscle wasting diseases across model organisms. Underscoring the relevance of a repertoire documenting such medicinal plants, we introduce PDMD (Plants Database for Muscle Wasting Diseases), a manually curated plants database reported for muscle wasting disea

The international trade in illegally logged and environmentally endangered timber has spurred enforcement agencies to seek additional technical procedures for the identification of wood species. All Dalbergia species are listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) which is the reason this genus was chosen for study. Multiple sources of the heartwood from different Dalbergia species were extracted and chromatographic profiles collected by gas chromatography with high resolution quadrupole Time of Flight mass spectrometry (GC/QToF). The collected data was min

Jacob Fidelis Ackermann was a German Medical Doctor born in 1765 in the city of Rüdesheim. Between 1789 and 1815 years he was professor of medicine at the universities of Mainz and Heidelberg, teaching the disciplines of anatomy, physiology, botany, and natural history. In his famous work on basilar invagination, Ackermann described and illustrated the cranial base flattening in two skulls from Italy. For this, he traveled through various European Alps analyzing autopsies and cranial specimens to describe the basilar invagination as an extremely inclined foramen magnum, with hypoplasia of occi

In 1597, Gaspare Tagliacozzi published a famous two-volume book on “plastic surgery.” The reconstructive technique he described was based on grafting skin taken from the arm onto the mutilated parts of the patient's damaged face – especially noses. This paper focuses on techniques of grafting, the “culture of grafting,” and the relationships between surgery and plant sciences in the sixteenth century. By describing the fascination with grafting in surgery, natural history, gardening, and agronomy the paper argues that grafting techniques were subject to delicate issues: to what extent it was m

Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are the most common causes of clinically diagnosed allergic contact dermatitis in North America. Approximately 50% to 75% of the US adult population is clinically sensitive to poison ivy, oak, and sumac. We reviewed the botany and history of these plants; urushiol chemistry and pathophysiology, clinical features, and the prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis caused by these plants; and current postexposure treatment and preventive methods, including ongoing investigations in the development of a vaccine (immunotherapy). Although extensive efforts ha

First used over 50 years ago, forensic palynology is an important tool for law enforcement agencies. In most countries that use forensic palynology, microscopic pollen grains and spores are traditionally used in criminal investigations to link suspects to crime scenes or items. While still underutilized in many parts of the world, forensic palynology is increasingly being used to determine the region of origin, or geolocation, for persons and items of interest. Drawing upon the experience of the authors using trace pollen and spores to geolocate forensic samples, the types, methods, and variab

Jiuniucao in Qizhou, known as "Qiai", was precious and expensive in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. But the authentic plant of Jiuniucao is not mentioned in the Ben Cao Tu Jing and other medical books in the Song, Ming and Qing Dynasties. In history, mugwort leaf originates from many species of plants, Jiuniucao may be one of it. So this paper is to identify the original plant of Jiuniucao and clarify the historical origin of Jiuniucao and mugwort leaf. The textual research and geographical origin analysis of Jiuniucao in ancient literature was conducted. Then field investigation and sa
