Brain wars: passion and conflict in the localization of vision in the brain.

David Ferrier and Hermann Munk, both pioneers in early brain research, engaged in a running controversy regarding the primary vision center in the brain. Both misinterpreted their experimental observations, but in different ways. Ferrier placed vision in the parietal lobe, Munk in the occipital lobe, However, Munk also felt he had observed a 'psychic blindness' in his animals, which was in reality only a central scotoma or other primary vision defect, and not the impairment of higher visual capacities that he proposed. Munk's concept has been repeatedly cited as the experimental correlate of v

MRI of the brain in muscle-eye-brain (MEB) disease.

Muscle-eye-brain (MEB) disease belongs to the spectrum of rare congenital syndromes with migration disorders of the brain and muscular dystrophy, along with the Walker-Warburg syndrome and Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy. Their features overlap, and differential diagnosis presents some difficulties. We examined the brain of 10 patients with MEB using high-field MRI and found a uniform pattern consisting of a pachygyria-type cortical migration disorder, septal and corpus callosum defects and severe hypoplasia of the pons in 7 of them.

The face-brain relationship: a case of the face not predicting the brain.

An infant with midline facial cleft and a severe brain malformation, not typical of holoprosencephaly, is reported. The CNF abnormalities suggested a malformation in the same category, but distinguishable from the various forms of holoprosencephaly sequence.

Brain life and brain death: a proposal for a normative agreement.

This paper reviews moral and cultural assessments which led to the definition of brain death and calls for a similar normative consensus regarding the moral recognition and legal protection of embryonal life related to criteria of brain life. This paper differentiates between cortical brain life I, i.e., the first existence of post-mitotic stationary neurons forming the early cortical plate (54th day post conception), and cortical brain life II, i.e., the beginning of cortical neuro-neuronal synapses (after the 70th day p.c.). The latter are preconditional for establishing the communicative ne

Lymphoreticular cells in human brain tumours and in normal brain.

The present investigation, using various rosetting assays of cell suspensions prepared by mechanical disaggregation or collagenase digestion, demonstrated lymphoreticular cells in human normal brain (cerebral cortex and cerebellum) and in malignant brain tumours. The study revealed T and B lymphocytes and their subsets (bearing receptors for Fc(IgG) and C3) in 5/14 glioma suspensions, comprising less than 15% of the cell population. Between 20-60% of cells in tumour suspensions morphologically resembled macrophages and less than or equal to 75% of these cells formed strong rosettes. Lymphocyte

Hemi-brain growth as a biomarker for whole brain growth.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain volume estimation are important components for evaluating hydrocephalus treatments, including shunts and endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) procedures. While MRI-based segmentation typically provides precise measurements, metallic artifacts from implanted shunts in hydrocephalus patients can impede accurate volume determination. This study introduces a method for assessing brain growth in hydrocephalus patients using artifact-affected MRI scans and presents an efficient, automated artificial intelligence (AI)-based pipeline for hemi-b

The Gut-Brain Axis and Neuroinflammation in Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major global disability and mortality cause, with the gut-brain axis playing a crucial role in its pathophysiology. Neuroinflammation, triggered by microglia and astrocytes, contributes to neuronal damage and cognitive impairment. This paper aims to explore the relationship between the gut-brain axis and neuroinflammation in TBI and its potential implications for therapeutic interventions. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases. Studies investigating the gut-brain axis, neuroinflammation, and

The contributions of relative brain viscosity to brain function and health.

Magnetic resonance elastography has emerged over the last two decades as a non-invasive method for quantitatively measuring the mechanical properties of the brain. Since the inception of the technology, brain stiffness has been the primary metric used to describe brain microstructural mechanics. However, more recently, a secondary measure has emerged as both theoretical and experimental significance, which is the ratio of tissue viscosity relative to tissue elasticity. This viscous-to-elastic ratio describes different but complementary aspects of brain microstructural health and is theorized t

Brain structural covariances in the ageing brain in the UK Biobank.

The morphologic properties of brain regions co-vary or correlate with each other. Here we investigated the structural covariances of cortical thickness and subcortical volumes in the ageing brain, along with their associations with age and cognition, using cross-sectional data from the UK Biobank (N = 42,075, aged 45-83 years, 53% female). As the structural covariance should be estimated in a group of participants, all participants were divided into 84 non-overlapping, equal-sized age groups ranging from the youngest to the oldest. We examined 84 cortical thickness covariances and subcortical

Brain stimulation-on-a-chip: a neuromodulation platform for brain slices.

Electrical stimulation of ex vivo brain tissue slices has been a method used to understand mechanisms imparted by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), but there are significant direct current electric field (dcEF) dosage and electrochemical by-product concerns in conventional experimental setups that may impact translational findings. Therefore, we developed an on-chip platform with fluidic, electrochemical, and magnetically-induced spatial control. Fluidically, the chamber geometrically confines precise dcEF delivery to the enclosed brain slice and allows for tissue recovery in ord

Neuroplasticity and non-invasive brain stimulation in the developing brain.

The brain is a dynamic organ whose growth and organization varies according to each subject's life experiences. Through adaptations in gene expression and the release of neurotrophins and neurotransmitters, these experiences induce a process of cellular realignment and neural network reorganization, which consolidate what is called neuroplasticity. However, despite the brain's resilience and dynamism, neuroplasticity is maximized during the first years of life, when the developing brain is more sensitive to structural reorganization and the repair of damaged neurons. This review presents an ov

The effect of fornix deep brain stimulation in brain diseases.

Deep brain stimulation is used to alleviate symptoms of neurological and psychiatric disorders including Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and obsessive-compulsive-disorder. Electrically stimulating limbic structures has been of great interest, and in particular, the region of the fornix. We conducted a systematic search for studies that reported clinical and preclinical outcomes of deep brain stimulation within the fornix up to July 2019. We identified 13 studies (7 clinical, 6 preclinical) that examined the effects of fornix stimulation in Alzheimer's disease (n = 9), traumatic brain injury (n

The Hippocratic Doctrine of "the Acute Brain Suffering" as the Brain Stroke.

BACKGROUND: The ancient Greek term "apoplexy" as is repeatedly mentioned by the Hippocratic School of Medicine, included a cluster of diseases, mainly those concerning the central nervous system. The term was wrongfully infiltrated in Western European medicine as synonymous to what is called today a "stroke" of the brain. OBJECTIVE: While in "Corpus Hippocraticum" the definition of the stroke was rather ambiguous; our study aims to unveil those fragments referring to it, in order to compose the Hippocratic theory of what it stood for "Acute Brain Suffering" (Greek: Οξείες Οδύνες του Εγκεφάλου

Blood-brain barrier dysfunction in disorders of the developing brain.

Disorders of the developing brain represent a major health problem. The neurological manifestations of brain lesions can range from severe clinical deficits to more subtle neurological signs or behavioral problems and learning disabilities, which often become evident many years after the initial damage. These long-term sequelae are due at least in part to central nervous system immaturity at the time of the insult. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain and maintains homeostasis. BBB alterations are observed during both acute and chronic brain insults. After an insult, excitatory ami

The gut or the brain?--Gastrointestinal misdiagnoses of infantile brain tumors.

PURPOSE: Central nervous system tumors account for the largest number of cancer deaths in childhood. Brain tumors in infants less than 3 years of age are rare; symptoms and signs are often non-specific. Patent anterior fontanelles/unfused cranial sutures in infants can accommodate rising intracranial pressure without acutely compromising the neurological status. We hypothesize that vomiting as the initial symptom, in infants with brain tumors, can possibly lead to extensive gastrointestinal evaluation, delaying the diagnosis of intracranial pathology. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cha

The possible roles of brain pericytes in brain ischemia and stroke.

Brain pericytes regulate a variety of functions, such as microcirculation, angiogenesis, and the blood brain barrier in the brain. Recent studies have also shown that they are pluripotent in a manner similar to mesenchymal stem cells. Since, brain pericytes actively control these functions, these cells probably play an important role not only during brain ischemia, but also in the post-stroke period.

Reduced brain size and gyrification in the brains of dyslexic patients.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that affects the way in which a person acquires reading skills. The pathologic substrate of the condition has been debated in the literature. Conclusions from postmortem studies remain controversial because series have been based on few and often ill-characterized cases. The present article expands on one of the reported neuropathologic findings in dyslexia, that is, wider minicolumns. Measurements were made of magnetic resonance images in a series of 16 dyslexic and 14 age- and sex-matched controls. Dyslexic patients had significantly smaller total c

Effect of THAM on brain oedema in experimental brain injury.

The metabolic brain acidosis after trauma has been thought to increase brain oedema and contribute to neurologic deterioration. Amelioration of the brain acidosis either by systemic buffering agents or by hyperventilation has been proposed as a method of treatment. The objective of this study was to explore brain oedema and the metabolic changes in brain that occur with the use of hyperventilation. Tromethamine and combination (THAM and hyperventilation) therapy in experimental fluid-percussion brain injury. Brain lactate, brain pH, inorganic phosphate (Pi) and ATP were measured by 1H and 31P
