Surface area accounts for the relation of gray matter volume to reading-related skills and history of dyslexia.

It is unknown whether the abnormalities in brain structure and function observed in dyslexic readers are congenital or arise later in development. Analyzing the 2 components of gray matter volume separately may help in differentiating these possibilities. Gray matter volume is the product of cortical surface area, determined during prenatal brain development, and cortical thickness, determined during postnatal development. For this study, 16 adults with a history of phonological dyslexia and 16 age- and gender-matched controls underwent magnetic resonance imaging and an extensive battery of te

Cortical thickness reductions in the middle frontal cortex in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD), an anxiety disorder characterized by the recurrence of panic attacks, has been reported to be associated with volumetric changes in several brain regions. There are, however, very few studies investigating abnormalities in cortical thickness, and little is known about the relationship between cortical thickness and social dysfunction in PD. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with PD and 38 healthy control participants (HC) were recruited for this study. A whole-brain analysis was performed to evaluate groupwise differences in cortical thickness using the FreeSurfe

Reduced cortical thickness related to single nucleotide polymorphisms in the major histocompatibility complex region in antipsychotic-naive schizophrenia.

The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between changes in cortical thickness and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region in a group of antipsychotic-naive schizophrenia (AN-SCZ) patients. Methods Twenty-five AN-SCZ patients and 51 healthy controls (HCs) participated in this study. General linear models were used to identify associations between the average cortical thicknesses of each brain region (N = 68) and each of the 11 SNPs in the MHC region in the AN-SCZ patients and HCs. Next, we performed independent-sample t tests to

Statin is associated with higher cortical thickness in early Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The brain is the most cholesterol-rich organ, essential for myelination and neuronal function. Statins, widely used to lower cholesterol, cross the blood-brain barrier and may impact brain cholesterol synthesis. Despite their widespread use, the effects of statins on cortical regions relevant to Alzheimer's disease (AD) are not well understood. This study aimed to compare cortical thickness between statin-exposed and statin-unexposed older adults and evaluate the potential neuroprotective effects of statins. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Ini

Association of an in vivo classifier for ARTerioloSclerosis (ARTS) with cortical thickness and cognition in older adults.

Brain arteriolosclerosis, a prominent small vessel pathology in the aging brain, is associated with cognitive impairment. Understanding the link between arteriolosclerosis and neurodegeneration may be crucial towards unravelling pathways by which arteriosclerosis contributes to cognitive impairment. Using a novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in-vivo classifier for ARTerioloSclerosis termed ARTS, we examined cross-sectional associations between ARTS, cortical thickness, and cognition. Data came from 1054 older participants who were enrolled in one of five ongoing Rush Alzheimer's Disease Ce

Childhood trauma and cortical thickness in healthy women, women with post-traumatic stress disorder, and women with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Structural brain changes have been associated with childhood trauma (CT) and several trauma-associated mental disorders. It is not known whether specific brain alterations are rather associated with CT as such or with disorders that are common sequelae of CT. In this study, we characterized cortical thickness in three distinct groups with CT: healthy women (HC/CT), women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD/CT) and women with borderline personality disorder (BPD/CT). These three CT-exposed groups were compared with healthy controls not exposed to CT (HC). METHODS: We recruited

Brain structural alterations and cognitive dysfunction in lung cancer patients without brain metastasis.

This study explored the relationship between cognitive function and brain structure in lung cancer (LCs) patients without brain metastases and healthy controls (HCs). A cohort of 75 chemotherapy-naive LCs without brain metastases and 29 age-, sex-, and education-matched HCs underwent cognitive assessments and structural MRI. The MRI focused on cortical thickness, surface area, and volume of subcortical structures. We examined the relationships among these parameters. The volume of twelve subcortical structures was significantly reduced in patients with advanced-stage lung cancer (aLCs) compare

Association between retinal vascular caliber and brain structure in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Several lines of research in the last decade have indicated the potential utility of retina as a window to the brain. Emerging evidence suggests abnormalities in retinal vascular caliber in schizophrenia. However, the relationship between retinal vascular measures and brain structure has not been examined in schizophrenia to date. Hence, we examined the relationship between retinal vasculature measured using fundus photography and brain structure measured using magnetic resonance imaging. METHOD: We recruited 17 healthy volunteers and 20 patients with schizophrenia. Using a non-myd

Abnormal brain structure implicated in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Recent studies suggest dysfunctional brain-gut interactions are involved in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia (FD). However, limited studies have investigated brain structural abnormalities in FD patients. This study aimed to identify potential differences in both cortical thickness and subcortical volume in FD patients compared to healthy controls (HCs) and to explore relationships of structural abnormalities with clinical symptoms. Sixty-nine patients and forty-nine HCs underwent 3T structural magnetic resonance imaging scans. Cortical thickness and subcortical volume were compared

Estimation of skull table thickness with clinical CT and validation with microCT.

Brain injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes (MVC) are extremely common yet the details of the mechanism of injury remain to be well characterized. Skull deformation is believed to be a contributing factor to some types of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Understanding biomechanical contributors to skull deformation would provide further insight into the mechanism of head injury resulting from blunt trauma. In particular, skull thickness is thought be a very important factor governing deformation of the skull and its propensity for fracture. Current computed tomography (CT) technology is l

Age-Related Differences in Cortical Thickness Vary by Socioeconomic Status.

Recent findings indicate robust associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and brain structure in children, raising questions about the ways in which SES may modify structural brain development. In general, cortical thickness and surface area develop in nonlinear patterns across childhood and adolescence, with developmental patterns varying to some degree by cortical region. Here, we examined whether age-related nonlinear changes in cortical thickness and surface area varied by SES, as indexed by family income and parental education. We hypothesized that SES disparities in age-related cha

Deviant trajectories of cortical maturation in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS): a cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with an increased susceptibility to develop schizophrenia. Despite a large body of literature documenting abnormal brain structure in 22q11DS, cerebral changes associated with brain maturation in 22q11DS remained largely unexplored. To map cortical maturation from childhood to adulthood in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, we used cerebral MRI from 59 patients with 22q11DS, aged 6 to 40, and 80 typically developing controls; three year follow-up assessments were also available for 32 patients and 31 matched controls. Cross-sectional cortical thickness

Associations of cortical thickness and cognition in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls.

Previous studies have found varying relationships between cognitive functioning and brain volumes in patients with schizophrenia. However, cortical thickness may more closely reflect cytoarchitectural characteristics than gray matter density or volume estimates. Here, we aimed to compare associations between regional variation in cortical thickness and executive functions, memory, as well as verbal and spatial processing in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls (HCs). We obtained magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological data for 131 patients and 138 matched controls. Automa

Abnormalities in cortical and subcortical morphology after neonatal neocortical lesions in rats.

The brain weight, cortical thickness, cross-sectional areas of subcortical structures, and various retrograde changes were compared in rats with neonatal or adult ablation of all or part of the neocortex. Neonatal lesions produced a widespread reduction in brain size accompanied by a variety of major structural changes including modification of the thickness of the residual cortex, necrosis and calcification of subcortical structures, and gross distortion of the structure of the hippocampus. The modification of the cortical thickness, but not the other changes, depended on the site and extent

Longitudinal Cortical Thickness Changes in Bipolar Disorder and the Relationship to Genetic Risk, Mania, and Lithium Use.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a highly heritable psychiatric disorder characterized by episodes of manic and depressed mood states and associated with cortical brain abnormalities. Although the course of BD is often progressive, longitudinal brain imaging studies are scarce. It remains unknown whether brain abnormalities are static traits of BD or result from pathological changes over time. Moreover, the genetic effect on implicated brain regions remains unknown. METHODS: Patients with BD and healthy control (HC) subjects underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging at baseline (123

Surface-based morphometry reveals distinct cortical thickness and surface area profiles in Williams syndrome.

Morphometric investigations of brain volumes in Williams syndrome (WS) consistently show significant reductions in gray matter volume compared to controls. Cortical thickness (CT) and surface area (SA) are two constituent parts of cortical gray matter volume that are considered genetically distinguishable features of brain morphology. Yet, little is known about the independent contribution of cortical CT and SA to these volumetric differences in WS. Thus, our objectives were: (i) to evaluate whether the microdeletion in chromosome 7 associated with WS has a distinct effect on CT and SA, and (i

Impact of Mesial Temporal Lobe Resection on Brain Structure in Medically Refractory Epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical resection can decrease seizure frequency in medically intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. However, the functional and structural consequences of this intervention on brain circuitry are poorly understood. We investigated structural changes that occur in brain circuits after mesial temporal lobe resection for refractory epilepsy. Specifically, we used neuroimaging techniques to evaluate changes in 1) contralesional hippocampal and bilateral mammillary body volume and 2) brain-wide cortical thickness. METHODS: Serial T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance images were acquired

Abnormal cortical thickness alterations in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and their relationships with facial dysmorphology.

Accumulating evidence from structural brain imaging studies on individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) has supported links between prenatal alcohol exposure and brain morphological deficits. Although global and regional volumetric reductions appear relatively robust, the effects of alcohol exposure on cortical thickness and relationships with facial dysmorphology are not yet known. The structural magnetic resonance imaging data from 69 children and adolescents with FASD and 58 nonexposed controls collected from 3 sites were examined using FreeSurfer to detect cortical thickness
