Lesioning an attractor network: investigations of acquired dyslexia.

A recurrent connectionist network was trained to output semantic feature vectors when presented with letter strings. When damaged, the network exhibited characteristics that resembled several of the phenomena found in deep dyslexia and semantic-access dyslexia. Damaged networks sometimes settled to the semantic vectors for semantically similar but visually dissimilar words. With severe damage, a forced-choice decision between categories was possible even when the choice of the particular semantic vector within the category was not possible. The damaged networks typically exhibited many mixed v

Effect of glucose on perinatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage.

Investigations suggest that hyperglycemia superimposed on hypoxia-ischemia or cerebral ischemia accentuates brain damage in adult experimental animals and humans. Such does not appear to be the case in immature animals. The present review discusses fundamental differences in immature and adult brain metabolism which account for the age-specific paradox. Based on currently available data, it is recommended that glucose supplementation not be curtailed during labor and delivery of asphyxiated human infants; on the contrary, glucose therapy might substantially reduce hypoxic-ischemic brain damage

Clinical and pathological features of alcohol-related brain damage.

One of the sequelae of chronic alcohol abuse is malnutrition. Importantly, a deficiency in thiamine (vitamin B(1)) can result in the acute, potentially reversible neurological disorder Wernicke encephalopathy (WE). When WE is recognized, thiamine treatment can elicit a rapid clinical recovery. If WE is left untreated, however, patients can develop Korsakoff syndrome (KS), a severe neurological disorder characterized by anterograde amnesia. Alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD) describes the effects of chronic alcohol consumption on human brain structure and function in the absence of more discre

Anosognosia for motor and sensory deficits after unilateral brain damage: a review.

PURPOSE: The syndrome of unawareness (anosognosia) for sensory and motor neurological deficits (hemiplegia, hemianaesthesia, and hemianopia), contralateral to the side of a hemispheric lesion, is reviewed. CONTENT: Main topics include: basic historical facts; the types of patient's interview and specific questions used to reveal the deficits; the clinical patterns of presentation; the associations and dissociations of the different anosognosic manifestations, and their relationships with associated disorders of sensory, memory, and executive-intellectual functions; the hemispheric asymmetry o

[Neuroimaging techniques for the diagnosis of brain damage in newborns].

Recently, magnetic resonance (MR) has become the technique of choice in evaluating neonatal central nervous system (CNS) diseases. It is the only imaging technique that can discriminate myelinated from neonatal unmyelinated white matter; it offers the highest sensitivity in detecting acute anoxic injury of neonatal brain, and, with proper coils and sequences, it can exquisitely depict neonatal brain anatomy and locate pathology. With new generation high-field MR imaging units it is now possible to obtain images of molecular diffusion. Preliminary reports suggest that diffusion imaging may be u

Margaret Kennard on sparing and recovery of function: a tribute on the 100th anniversary of her birth.

Margaret Kennard was an American pioneer in the experimental study of sparing and recovery of function. Her most famous experiments were performed on monkeys and apes at Yale University during the late 1930s and early 1940s. By describing the behavioral effects of brain damage on infantile, juvenile, and older primates, she drew new attention to just how important developmental status can be at the time of neural insult. Kennard also conducted experiments which showed that even adult primates can exhibit significant sparing and recovery of function, especially if brain lesions are made in stag

[Mutism in central motor disorders--a review of the literature].

Mutism can be defined as "a condition in which there is no, or very little, oral-verbal expression, whereas comprehension of speech ... is normal or at least at a considerably higher level" (Lebrun, 1990). Benson (1979) enumerates five neuroanatomical correlates of mutism: (a) damage to the Broca region, (b) lesion of the supplementary motor area of the dominant hemisphere, (c) dysfunction of the mesencephalic reticular system, (d) thalamotomy, and (e) bilateral pathology of cortical and subcortical motor structures. The last item refers to syndromes of mutism resulting from central motor diso

[Significance of model studies for explanation of the pathogenesis of the mechanically induced birth trauma (author's transl)].

We have studied the propotions of displacements from fetal cerebral parts during simulated intrauterine pressure. Stillborn children from the death to the experiments last only some hours, were put in cephalic position in our birth model. The cavum uteri was simulated by a metal cylinder, in which we gave compressed air for simulating the labor. The pressure was held about 100 mm Hg. A rubber cuff was fixed on the metal cylinder and let an opening of 8 cm, simulating the cervix uteri. The model with the death infant in it was frozen and than the fetal head sectioned in slides of 1,5 cm in the

The neuropathology of alcohol-related brain damage.

Excessive alcohol use can cause structural and functional abnormalities of the brain and this has significant health, social and economic implications for most countries in the world. Even heavy social drinkers who have no specific neurological or hepatic problems show signs of regional brain damage and cognitive dysfunction. Changes are more severe and other brain regions are damaged in patients who have additional vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency (Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome). Quantitative studies and improvements in neuroimaging have contributed significantly to the documentation of these c

Head-injured adults: recommendations for endotracheal suctioning.

Endotracheal suctioning (ETS) is a conventional nursing intervention used to decrease pulmonary complications in the critically ill patient. ETS provides a particular dilemma for the head-injured patient because it increases intracranial pressure and may put the patient at increased risk for intracranial hypertension and cerebral ischemia. Research in endotracheal suctioning targets understanding the ETS response in the severely head-injured patient. This article reviews the major research focused on suctioning the head-injured patient. The guidelines for practice based on this research includ

Ideational apraxia.

Ideational apraxia was investigated in 20 left brain-damaged patients with tests requiring the demonstration of how objects are used. On a multiple object use test the most frequent errors were those of omission, misuse and mislocation, while sequence errors were rare. Patients also failed on a single object use test, which showed a correlation of 0.85 with the multiple object use test. Neither of these tests was significantly correlated with an ideomotor apraxia test (imitation of movements). Ideational apraxia was frequently, but not exclusively, associated with damage to the left posterior

[Abnormality in the behaviour of mice after an experimental encephalitis by yellow fever virus 17 D. Experiment model(author's transl)].

Viral encephalitides in infants are very often followed by serious mental manifestations. To be able experimentally to investigate this pathological phenomenon, we established the following model. Mice having recovered from an intracerebral infection with yellow fever virus 17 D (routine test for the potency of yellow fever vaccine) and giving the impression of normal and healthy animals were examined for their psychical behaviour. As unit of measurement we took the time for running through a labyrith (fig. 1). At the entrance of the labyrith in a box there was placed the population of animals

[Delayed symptoms of hypoxic brain damage after temporary improvement].

A shipyard worker was doing welding work inside a pipe with argon as cover gas. After taking a break he fainted while controlling the weld, also inside the pipe. He was rescued after 15-20 minutes and regained consciousness after a few hours. Two days later he was discharged from hospital in apparently good health. After a week he returned to the hospital suffering from confusion, failing memory, aphasia, apraxia and urinary incontinence. MR showed elevated signal intensity bilaterally in the caudate nucleus. He improved gradually and six months later was given less demanding work. The course

[Brain injuries after transient circulatory and/or respiratory failure (cerebral hypoxic injury) in newborn infants].

A clinico-pathological survey of different types of cerebral hypoxic/ischemic injuries in foetuses and infants is presented. The lesions may occur before, during and after the birth. Some of them occur only in foetuses and infants less than two months old. The topic has been simplified in order to be useful as a basis for evaluating these lesions in daily diagnostic work. Cerebral hypoxic/ischemic injuries are frequently seen in preterm infants and term infants with severe cardiac anomalies. Extensive damage may be fatal or may involve severe permanent psychomotoric deficits in the survivors.
