Assessment of Sport-Related Brain Injuries with Rapid Objective Perimetry.

Sport-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or concussion is common and has long-term implications. The lack of diagnostically accurate, rapid, and easy-to-administer tests exacerbates the problem. We evaluated the objectiveFIELD Analyser® (OFA®) for mTBI. This cross-sectional study included athletes who had sustained a concussion, and two groups of controls: the putative control group (pCG) comprising rugby players who claimed they had never had a concussion, and a non-rugby normal control group (nCG). Two OFA tests, the 8 min (OFA30) and the rapid 90 s (OFA30-12), were performed. Discri

Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicle Therapy in Ischemic Brain Injuries.

Ischemic brain injury (IBI), including stroke and cardiac arrest-induced global cerebral injury, presents a significant clinical challenge due to its high morbidity and incidence of neurological deficits. Currently, effective strategies for neurological repair remain limited. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a diverse group of cell-derived, lipid-bound nanoparticles that encapsulate RNAs, proteins, lipids, metabolites, growth factors, and cytokines. EVs play an essential role in intercellular communication and are involved in various physiological and pathological processes. Stem cell-derived

Cerebellar Peduncle Injuries in Patients with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: The cerebellum is connected to the brain stem by three pairs of cerebellar peduncles (CPs)-superior (SCP), middle (MCP), and inferior (ICP)-which carry proprioceptive information to regulate movement and maintain balance and posture. Injury or damage to the CPs caused by tumors, infarcts, or traumatic brain injuries (TBI) results in poor coordination and balance problems. Current data on CP-related injuries and their effect on balance control are sparse and restricted to a few case studies. There have been no studies to date that have investigated CP injuries in a large sample of p

Multinomial Estimations of Predictive Risk Factors for Traumatic Brain Injuries.

Introduction Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) affect millions of patients each year, with more than 220,000 hospitalizations in 2019 and 64,000 deaths in 2020 alone. TBIs span a plethora of injuries including cerebral contusions and lacerations, axonal injuries, optic pathway disruptions, and skull fractures. Previous research has established that characteristics such as sex, mechanism of injury (MOI), and blood-thinning agents have some causal connections to a variety of cranial traumas. Methods This paper sought to analyze aggravating risk factors for various TBIs in the New York City borough

Traumatic brain injuries induced pituitary dysfunction: a call for algorithms.

Traumatic brain injury affects many people each year, resulting in a serious burden of devastating health consequences. Motor-vehicle and work-related accidents, falls, assaults, as well as sport activities are the most common causes of traumatic brain injuries. Consequently, they may lead to permanent or transient pituitary insufficiency that causes adverse changes in body composition, worrisome metabolic function, reduced bone density, and a significant decrease in one's quality of life. The prevalence of post-traumatic hypopituitarism is difficult to determine, and the exact mechanisms lyin

Neuroprotectants attenuate hypobaric hypoxia-induced brain injuries in cynomolgus monkeys.

Hypobaric hypoxia (HH) exposure can cause serious brain injury as well as life-threatening cerebral edema in severe cases. Previous studies on the mechanisms of HH-induced brain injury have been conducted primarily using non-primate animal models that are genetically distant to humans, thus hindering the development of disease treatment. Here, we report that cynomolgus monkeys ( Macacafascicularis) exposed to acute HH developed human-like HH syndrome involving severe brain injury and abnormal behavior. Transcriptome profiling of white blood cells and brain tissue from monkeys exposed to increa

Amiodarone exacerbates brain injuries after hypoxic-ischemic insult in mice.

BACKGROUND: Sodium ion transportation plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Amiodarone, a Vaughan-Williams class III antiarrhythmic drug, has been widely used to treat life-threatening arrhythmia and cardiac arrest worldwide. In addition to its inhibitory effects on the potassium channel, amiodarone also blocks various sodium ion transporters, including the voltage-gated sodium channel, sodium pump, and Na+/Ca+ exchanger. Considering these pharmacological profile, amiodarone may affect the influx-efflux balance of sodium ion in the hypoxic-ischemic brain. P

Peripheral nerve injuries in the adult with traumatic brain injury.

Fifty adult patients who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) were screened for the presence of a peripheral nerve injury (PNI). All suspected patients had diagnostic electromyography performed in order to confirm the clinical findings. The incidence of PNI with TBI was 34%. A variety of nerve injuries were seen, the most frequent of which were ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow (10%) and brachial plexus injuries (10%). No patient initiated a complaint that led to the diagnosis. In addition, all the neuropathies were missed prior to admission. The neuropathies commonly were found in the n

Veterans Traumatic Brain Injuries and Neurosurgical Challenges: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Veterans experience a high prevalence of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) due to combat-related incidents such as explosive blasts, penetrating injuries, and blunt force trauma. These military TBIs are often more complex than civilian TBIs, leading to increased long-term neurological consequences. Over 414,000 service members have been diagnosed with TBI since 2000, highlighting the need to understand the implications of these injuries and the neurosurgical challenges in their treatment. METHODS: This narrative review examines the literature on TBIs in veterans, focusing on the cha

Consideration of Brain CT Imaging Standard for Mild Head Injuries.

It has been reported that various clinical criteria indicate computed tomography (CT) examination for mild head injury (MHI). However, the decision to perform CT for MHI largely depends on the physician. Data on severe head injuries is available in sources such as the Japan Neurotrauma Data Bank, but only a few data has been collected on MHI. A total of 1688 patients with MHI (Glasgow Coma Scale 14 and 15) treated at our hospital from June 2017 to May 2019 were reviewed. CT was performed in 1237 patients (73.28%), and intracranial hemorrhage was detected in 50 patients. Three patients deterior

Cannabidiol's neuroprotective properties and potential treatment of traumatic brain injuries.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has numerous pharmacological targets that initiate anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and antiepileptic properties. These neuroprotective benefits have generated interest in CBD's therapeutic potential against the secondary injury cascade from traumatic brain injury (TBI). There are currently no effective broad treatment strategies for combating the damaging mechanisms that follow the primary injury and lead to lasting neurological consequences or death. However, CBD's effects on different neurotransmitter systems, the blood brain barrier, oxidative stress mechanisms, and the
