Second Wave, Late-Stage Neuroinflammation in Cleared Brains of Aged 5xFAD Alzheimer's Mice Detected by Macrolaser Light Sheet Microscopy Imaging.

This study leverages the innovative imaging capabilities of macrolaser light-sheet microscopy to elucidate the 3D spatial visualization of AD-associated neuropathologic networks in the transparent brains of 44-week-old 5xFAD mice. Brain samples from ten AD and seven control mice were prepared through a hydrophilic tissue-clearing pipeline and immunostained with thioflavin S (β-amyloid), anti-CD11b antibody (microglia), and anti-ACSA-2 antibody (astrocytes). The 5xFAD group exhibited significantly higher average total surface volumes of β-amyloid accumulation than the control group (AD, 898,634

Low-Intensity Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Enhances Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Expression through PERK/ATF4 Signaling Pathway.

Low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy (Li-ESWT) is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, but its mechanisms are not well understood. Previously, we found that Li-ESWT increased the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Here we assessed the underlying signaling pathways in Schwann cells in vitro and in penis tissue in vivo after nerve injury. The result indicated that BDNF were significantly increased by the Li-ESWT after nerve injury, as well as the expression of BDNF in Schwann cells (SCs, RT4-D6P2T) in vitro. Li-ESWT activated the protein kinase RNA-like

Effect of third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy in adults with acquired brain injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: Third-wave cognitive behavioral therapies may be beneficial for relieving psychological symptoms in adults with acquired brain injury, but no comprehensive overview and pooled estimate of their effects exist. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to address this gap. METHOD: Three databases (Pubmed, APA PsycInfo, and the Cochrane Library) were searched. Included studies were quality-assessed and frequentist and Bayesian analytical strategies were employed for data synthesis and interpretation. Effects were evaluated for outcomes reported

Early wave reflection of carotid artery is associated with 18 F-FDG PET hypometabolism in Alzheimer's brain areas of cognitively normal adults.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial stiffening likely plays a role in Alzheimer disease (AD) pathogenesis. The current study investigated whether inter-individual variations in arterial stiffness and pressure wave parameters were associated with 18 F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) metabolism in AD-associated brain areas throughout adulthood, independently of age and before the onset of any neuropsychological disorders. METHODS: A prospective, large age-range population of 67 patients (17 young, 16 middle-aged, and 34 older adults; 37 women) underwent a: brain 18 F-FDG PET, blood pressure recording

Psycho-Emotional Well-Being in Caregivers of People with Acquired Brain Injury: An Exploratory Study on the Human Immersion Model during the Omicron Wave.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a "human immersion model" (HIM) in improving psychological well-being in caregivers of patients with acquired brain injury (ABI) during the Omicron wave in Italy. Fifteen subjects affected by ABI, who attended our intensive neurorehabilitation unit from January to March 2022 and their caregivers were submitted to the HIM. This novel approach consisted of "real" long-lasting meetings between the patients and their careers in a hospital setting (1-72 h meeting per week for 8 weeks). Each ABI caregiver was assessed through the administra

Mechanistic insights on age-related changes in heart-aorta-brain hemodynamic coupling using a pulse wave model of the entire circulatory system.

Age-related changes in aortic biomechanics can impact the brain by reducing blood flow and increasing pulsatile energy transmission. Clinical studies have shown that impaired cardiac function in patients with heart failure is associated with cognitive impairment. Although previous studies have attempted to elucidate the complex relationship between age-associated aortic stiffening and pulsatility transmission to the cerebral network, they have not adequately addressed the effect of interactions between aortic stiffness and left ventricle (LV) contractility (neither on energy transmission nor o

Slow Wave Sleep Deficits in the Flinders Sensitive Line Rodent Model of Depression: Effects of Medial Forebrain Bundle Deep-Brain Stimulation.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is an affective disorder typically accompanied by sleep disturbances. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) is an emerging intervention for treatment-resistant depression, but its effect on sleep has not been closely examined. Here we aimed to characterise sleep deficits in the Flinders sensitive line, an established rodent model of depression, and investigate the consequences of MFB stimulation on sleep-related phenotypes. Rats were implanted with bilateral stimulation electrodes in the MFB, surface electrodes to record electrocortic

Development of a brain wave model based on the quantitative analysis of EEG and EEG biofeedback therapy in patients with panic attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current global crisis facing the world is the COVID-19 pandemic. Infection from the SARS-CoV-2 virus leads to serious health complications and even death. As it turns out, COVID-19 not only physically assails the health of those infected, but also leads to serious mental illness regardless of the presence of the disease. Social isolation, fear, concern for oneself and one's loved ones, all of this occurs when a pandemic overloads people. People exhibit numerous neurological disorders that have never happened to them before. Patients are diagnosed with frequent panic attacks, the result of

Frontal brain and leptomeningeal biopsy specimens correlated with cerebrospinal fluid outflow resistance and B-wave activity in patients suspected of normal-pressure hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVE: Normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a potentially treatable syndrome with abnormal cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. Meningeal fibrosis and/or obliteration of the subarachnoid space has been suggested as the pathoanatomic basis. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether meningeal fibrosis causes increased resistance to cerebrospinal fluid outflow (R(out)) and/or increased B-wave activity and whether pathological changes in the brain parenchyma after brain compliance, causing increased B-wave activity. METHODS: The study involved a group of 38 consecutively studied

Overproduction of hydrogen sulfide, generated by cystathionine β-synthase, disrupts brain wave patterns and contributes to neurobehavioral dysfunction in a rat model of down syndrome.

Using a novel rat model of Down syndrome (DS), the functional role of the cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS)/hydrogen sulfide (H2S) pathway was investigated on the pathogenesis of brain wave pattern alterations and neurobehavioral dysfunction. Increased expression of CBS and subsequent overproduction of H2S was observed in the brain of DS rats, with CBS primarily localizing to astrocytes and the vasculature. DS rats exhibited neurobehavioral defects, accompanied by a loss of gamma brain wave activity and a suppression of the expression of multiple pre- and postsynaptic proteins. Aminooxyacetate, a

Mild blast wave exposure produces intensity-dependent changes in MMP2 expression patches in rat brains - Findings from different blast severities.

Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) is a gelatinase with multiple functions at the neurovascular interface, including local modification of the glia limitans to facilitate access of immune cells into the brain and amyloid-beta degradation during responses to injury or disease. This study examines regional changes in immunoreactive MMP2 in the rat brain after a single mild (2.7-7.9 psi peak) or moderate (13-17.5 psi peak) blast overpressure (BOP) exposure. Immunopositive MMP2 expression was examined quantitatively in histological sections of decalcified rat heads as a marker at 2, 24, and 72 h af

Individual Differences in Developmental Trajectories of Global and Subcortical Brain Volumes Between Late Childhood and Late Adolescence: Findings From a 12-Wave Neuroimaging Study.

Adolescence is characterised by protracted structural brain development, with different brain regions showing distinct developmental trajectories. While studies have identified average developmental trajectories, few have formally quantified individual differences in the developmental trajectories of global brain structures and subcortical regions across adolescence. Utilising the unique 12 waves of high temporal resolution MRI data from the Danish HUBU cohort (N = 90; ages seven to 21; 745 scans; on average 8.30 scans per participant) and nonlinear mixed modelling techniques, we examined both

Fast-wave periodic complexes in a mentally retarded child who later developed subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: a modification of a classic EEG by preexisting brain damage?

The EEG of a 12-year-old girl with stage II subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), who had also suffered from a non-progressive mental retardation of unknown aetiology since early childhood, revealed periodic generalised stereotyped fast wave bursts synchronous with myoclonic jerks. The background activity was nearly normal. The diagnosis of SSPE was established by raised serum and measles antibody titres, raised CSF IgG, and brain biopsy. This rare type of periodic complex has only once been described in the literature, again in a mentally retarded child who had developed SSPE. We sugges

Derived-band auditory brain-stem response estimates of traveling wave velocity in humans: II. Subjects with noise-induced hearing loss and Meniére's disease.

Estimates of cochlear traveling wave velocity (TWV) were computed from derived-band auditory brain-stem response (ABR) latencies in subjects with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) or Meniére's disease (MD). ABR wave V latencies were determined for each of six derived frequency bands (unmasked-8 kHz, 8-4 kHz, 4-2 kHz, 2-1 kHz, 1 kHz-500 Hz, and 500-250 Hz). Representative frequencies were assigned to the derived bands by estimating their energy midpoints, and cochlear positions corresponding to these frequencies were determined using Greenwood's (1961) place-frequency function for humans.
