Midwifery Practices for the Conversion of Foetus With Breech Presentation: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Although the conversion of the foetus with breech presentation to cephalic presentation is well-supported in the literature in terms of its benefits for maternal and neonatal health, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the specific midwifery practices involved in this process. The purpose of this study is to identify the methods used by midwives to convert fetuses with breech presentation to cephalic presentation and how they feel about performing these methods. METHODS: The study employs a descriptive exploratory qualitative design. Individual in-depth interviews were condu

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip Is Not Associated with Breech Presentation in Preterm Infants.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to (1) determine the incidence of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in preterm infants born prior to 35 completed weeks' gestation in a breech presentation, and (2) evaluate if the association between breech presentation and DDH in full-term infants holds for premature infants. STUDY DESIGN: This study design comprises retrospective review of infants born between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2017, at <35 weeks' gestation and admitted to the NICU. Infants had hip ultrasounds at 4 to 6 weeks' corrected age if they were born in a breech presentatio

Induction of labor in breech presentations at term: a retrospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate whether induction of breech delivery at term is feasible and safe for mother and child compared with spontaneous vaginal breech delivery. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 268 singleton term breech deliveries with an attempted vaginal delivery were identified in a single-center retrospective observational study. Out of these, 73 cases had an induction of labor for various medical and obstetric reasons and were compared to 195 spontaneous singleton breech deliveries. The main outcome measure was the mode of delivery. Secondary outcomes included maternal a

Mode of delivery and neonatal death in 17,587 infants presenting by the breech.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of caesarean section on neonatal mortality in infants presenting by the breech. DESIGN: Population-based non-experimental comparison of infants presenting by the breech born vaginally with those born by caesarean section. Neonatal mortality rates were calculated for 250 g birthweight intervals. Weight-specific relative risks (RRs) were further adjusted for birthweight in 50 g categories. SETTING: New York City, 1978-1983. Data came from the Department of Health's computerized vital records on livebirths and infant deaths. SUBJECTS: 17,587 singleton breech liv

Breech Presentation in Twins as a Risk Factor for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying risk factors associated with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is essential for early diagnosis and treatment. Breech presentation is a major DDH risk factor, possibly because of crowding of the fetus within the uterus. In multifetal pregnancy, fetuses are generally smaller than singletons, which may obscure the effect of breech presentation on fetal hips. Only a few studies have investigated the occurrence of DDH in multifetal pregnancies. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether the breech presentation is a major risk factor of DDH in twin pregnancies. ME

[Caesarean delivery in a woman with a unicorn uterus and foetal breech presentation].

In this case report a unicorn uterus was diagnosed at a caesarean delivery in a 23-year-old woman with known foetal breech presentation and suspected low foetal weight. She had had a failed attempt of cephalic version two weeks before delivery, and her baby's weight was checked regularly in third term. Unicorn uterus is associated with a higher risk of spontaneous abortions, infertility, preterm labour, foetal malpresentation, low birth weight, caesarean delivery and renal malformations. Although pregnancies in these women can be uneventful, it is advised, that women with unicorn uteri are fol

Contribution of changing risk factors to the trend in breech presentation at term.

BACKGROUND: Recent population-wide changes in perinatal risk factors may affect rates of breech presentation at birth, and have implications for the provision of breech services and training in breech management. AIMS: To investigate whether changes in maternal and pregnancy characteristics explain the observed trend in breech presentation at term. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All singleton term (≥37 week) births in New South Wales during 2002-2012 were identified through birth and associated hospital records. Annual rates of breech presentation were determined. Logistic regression modelling was u

[Breech presentations in 1957-1961 and 1967-1975 at the Landesfrauenklinik Magdeburg].

Breech presentation is classed as an abnormality because of the high associated perinatal mortality and morbidity rates and the slightly increased maternal morbidity. A review of 14 years' experience with breech delivery was undertaken to ascertain patterns of care. During this period there were 33 183 births and there were 1271 cases of breech presentation. The method of delivery in the 1271 cases included 91,5 per cent vaginal deliveries and 8,5 per cent cesarean sections. There was an increase to 15,3 per cent during the last 2 years of the review. This review indicates a decline in perinat

The breech presentation and the vertex presentation following an external version represent risk factors for neonatal hip instability.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and type of hip-joint instability and the frequency of hip dislocation requiring treatment in neonates who had been lying in the breech presentation and were delivered vaginally after an external version or by caesarean section, and to compare them with neonates who were naturally in the vertex presentation. Breech presentations without ongoing labour were subjected to an attempted external version and, in cases where this proved unsuccessful or where labour had started, to deliver by caesarean section. None of the breech presenta

Term breech presentation vaginal births in Tibet: A retrospective analysis of 451 cases.

BACKGROUND: In high altitude areas, like Tibet, most fetuses in breech presentation at term are delivered vaginally owing to a variety of reasons, but this has not been published. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide references and evidence for the delivery of breach presentation term fetuses in high altitude areas, through comparing and analyzing the data of full-term singleton fetuses with breech or cephalic presentation in Naqu People's Hospital, Tibet. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 451 breech presentation fetuses mentioned above over a period of 5  year

[Breech Presentation: CNGOF Guidelines for Clinical Practice - Case Selection for Trial of Labour].

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this chapter is to examine on the basis of the knowledge currently available the criteria available before labour for selecting women who would be eligible for trial of vaginal delivery. METHODOLOGY: Bibliographical research in French and English using the Medline and Cochrane databases between 1980 and 2019 and the recommendations of international societies. RESULTS: It is recommended to offer women who wish to attempt a vaginal delivery at term a pelvimetry to decide with them on their mode of delivery (Grade C). The pelvimetric standards used at the time of the

Common determinants of breech presentation at birth in singletons: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate common determinants of breech presentation at parturition. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based cohort study (between 1/1/2001 and 31/12/2010) was conducted among all women who delivered a singleton baby in breech presentation from 22 completed weeks of gestation. A binary logistic regression was used to determine independent feto-maternal characteristics of breech presentation at birth, adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Variables were: gestational age, birth weight, maternal age, parity and gender of the baby, presence or absence of a history of cesarean s

Breech presentation: a retrospective analysis of 12-years' experience at a single center.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate neonatal outcome after breech presentation in term pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN: Data from 1345 term breech deliveries over a 12-year study period were retrospectively reviewed. Neonatal morbidity and mortality were compared by route of delivery. RESULTS: We investigated 1345 term breech deliveries. A total of 1041 patients (77.4%) attempted a vaginal delivery; of these, 808 (60.1%) were delivered vaginally and 233 patients (17.3%) who failed at vaginal birth underwent cesarean section. The other 304 women (22.6%) were delivered by a planned cesarean section. No statis

Decreased neonatal tibial bone ultrasound velocity in term infants born after breech presentation.

OBJECTIVE: Fetuses found to be in the breech presentation have limited motion of their lower limbs. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that bone speed of sound (SOS) would be lower in infants born after breech presentation than in those born after vertex presentation. STUDY DESIGN: We studied 127 singleton, appropriate for gestational age, term infants delivered by a scheduled cesarean delivery at approximately 38 weeks of gestation because of breech presentation or repeat elective cesarean section with vertex presentation. We used the Sunlight Omnisense 7000p device to measure

[Breech presentation of the second twin. Effect on early morbidity and perinatal mortality].

Twin delivery is often complicated by breech presentation of the second twin. To investigate the influence of breech presentation of the second twin, we reviewed all 259 twin deliveries from the 18,404 deliveries at our institution over 11 years between 1978 to 1989. The neonatal morbidity of the second twin in breech presentation (pH less than 7,15; 1-minute-Apgar less than 7, transfer to newborn hospital) was significantly higher in comparison to vertex presentation of the second twin. A dependence of neonatal morbidity on the time interval was not found. Where the second twin was in vertex
