[Hippocampo-parahippocampal area and its role on human memory].

The hippocampo-parahippocampal area (medial temporal lobe system: MTL) plays an important role on human memory. Its bilateral damage may produce selective and severe impairment of anterograde and retrograde episodic memory. Our MRI volumetric study of 5 cases of pure MTL amnesia secondary to herpes simplex encephalitis showed that degree of amnesia and recovery was significantly correlated with the volume of the remaining or functioning MTL. It has to be kept in mind that MTL is a part of a widely distributed memory system. Our functional imaging studies on verbal memory showed that one of the

Differences in brain functioning between obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder: a clinical study using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) share common epidemiological and clinical features, but their shared neurobiological basis remains unclear. This study was designed to examine similarities and differences in brain functioning between GAD and OCD using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). 31 patients diagnosed with GAD, 31 with OCD, and 31 healthy controls (HCs) participated in the study. A 53-channel fNIRS system was used to measure changes in oxygenated hemoglobin ([oxy-Hb]) concentration during a verbal fluency task. Five regions of interes

Transcranial direct current stimulation combined with integrative speech therapy in a child with cerebral palsy: A case report.

The aim of this study was to describe the results of the first case combining integrative speech therapy with anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over Broca's area in a child with cerebral palsy. The ABFW phonology test was used to analyze speech based on the Percentage of Correct Consonants (PCC) and Percentage of Correct Consonants - Revised (PCC-R). After treatment, increases were found in both PCC (Imitation: 53.63%-78.10%; Nomination: 53.19%-70.21%) and PPC-R (Imitation: 64.54%-83.63%; Nomination: 61.70%-77.65%). Moreover, reductions occurred in distortions, substitution

EEG-based time and spatial interpretation of activation areas for relaxation and words writing between poor and capable dyslexic children.

Symptoms of dyslexia such as difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, and/or poor spelling as well as decoding abilities, are easily misinterpreted as laziness and defiance amongst school children. Indeed, 37.9% of 699 school dropouts and failures are diagnosed as dyslexic. Currently, Screening for dyslexia relies heavily on therapists, whom are few and subjective, yet objective methods are still unavailable. EEG has long been a popular method to study the cognitive processes in human such as language processing and motor activity. However, its interpretation is limited to ti

Selective impairment of phonation: a case study.

A 47-year-old right-handed man underwent craniotomy for clipping of an aneurism at the trifurcation of the left middle cerebral artery. Subsequently, he suffered a left hemisphere CVA after which his speech and language resembled that of Broca's aphasia with accompanying apraxia of speech. Medical, behavioral, and acoustical data amassed over a period of several months indicated numerous contraindications to traditional diagnoses of Broca's aphasia, apraxia of speech, and dysarthria. Ultimately, it was determined that the patient had a selective impairement of phonation or laryngeal apraxia. T

Amnesia after a discrete basal forebrain lesion.

Destructive lesions of the basal forebrain are often associated with memory impairment and this structure is thought to contribute to memory function by providing a cholinergic input to critical structures associated with memory such as the hippocampus and amygdala. In previously reported cases of amnesia associated with damage in the basal forebrain, multiple neuroanatomical regions were damaged, and the critical lesion responsible for amnesia has not been identified clearly. We report a patient who developed primarily anterograde amnesia after clipping of an unruptured anterior communicating

Asymmetry in the Cytoarchitecture of the Area 44 Homolog of the Brain of the Chimpanzee Pan troglodytes.

The evolution of the brain in apes and man followed a joint pathway stemming from common ancestors 5-10 million years ago. However, although apparently sharing similar organization and neurochemical properties, association areas of the isocortex remain one of the cornerstones of what sets humans aside from other primates. Brodmann's area 44, the area of Broca, is known for its implication in speech, and thus indirectly is a key mark of human uniqueness. This latero-caudal part of the frontal lobe shows a marked functional asymmetry in humans, and takes part in other complex functions, includin

Language fMRI abnormalities associated with FOXP2 gene mutation.

Half the members of the KE family suffer from a speech and language disorder caused by a mutation in the FOXP2 gene. We examined functional brain abnormalities associated with this mutation using two fMRI language experiments, one involving covert (silent) verb generation and the other overt (spoken) verb generation and word repetition. The unaffected family members showed a typical left-dominant distribution of activation involving Broca's area in the generation tasks and a more bilateral distribution in the repetition task, whereas the affected members showed a more posterior and more extens

Transcortical sensory aphasia following left frontal infarction.

Two right-handed patients who exhibited language disability after left frontal infarction are described. The patients spoke fluently and exhibited excellent repetition ability from the onset of infarction without exhibiting any oral apraxia, but had deficits in auditory comprehension, naming, reading and writing. In both patients, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed infarction in the left inferior frontal gyrus, the middle frontal gyrus and the anterior part of the lower precentral gyrus. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) revealed decreased blood flow in the same r

The Precentral Insular Cortical Network for Speech Articulation.

Apraxia of speech is a motor disorder characterized by the impaired ability to coordinate the sequential articulatory movements necessary to produce speech. The critical cortical area(s) involved in speech apraxia remain controversial because many of the previously reported cases had additional aphasic impairments, preventing localization of the specific cortical circuit necessary for the somatomotor execution of speech. Four patients with "pure speech apraxia" (i.e., who had no aphasic and orofacial motor impairments) are reported here. The critical lesion in all four patients involved, in th

Predominance of caudate nucleus lesions in acute ischaemic stroke patients with impairment in language and speech.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Whereas traditional views of language processing in the brain have assumed that the language function is concentrated to a limited number of cortical areas (Broca's and Wernicke's areas), current knowledge points at a much more complex system of language and speech processing involving many brain areas, both cortical and subcortical. The purpose of the current study was to make an unbiased assessment of which cerebral areas are affected in first-ever acute ischaemic stroke patients identified as having language and speech impairments according to the National Institutes

Observed, Executed, and Imagined Action Representations can be Decoded From Ventral and Dorsal Areas.

Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) research on action observation has emphasized the role of putative mirror neuron areas such as Broca's area, ventral premotor cortex, and the inferior parietal lobule. However, recent evidence suggests action observation involves many distributed cortical regions, including dorsal premotor and superior parietal cortex. How these different regions relate to traditional mirror neuron areas, and whether traditional mirror neuron areas play a special role in action representation, is unclear. Here we use multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to s

Exploratory analysis of cortical thickness in low- and high-fit young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown changes in the human brain associated with physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The effects of CRF on cortical thickness have been well-described in older adults, where a positive association between CRF and cortical thickness has been reported, but the impact of sustained aerobic activity in young adults remains poorly described. Here, exploratory analysis was performed on cortical thickness data that was collected in groups of fit and sedentary young adults. METHODS: Twenty healthy sedentary individuals (<2 h/week physical activity) were compa

Resting functional connectivity of language networks: characterization and reproducibility.

The neural basis of language comprehension and production has been associated with superior temporal (Wernicke's) and inferior frontal (Broca's) cortical areas, respectively. However, recent resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) and lesion studies have implicated a more extended network in language processing. Using a large RSFC data set from 970 healthy subjects and seed regions in Broca's and Wernicke's, we recapitulate this extended network that includes not only adjoining prefrontal, temporal and parietal regions but also bilateral caudate and left putamen/globus pallidus and subtha

Impact of cerebellar lesion on syntactic processing evidenced by event-related potentials.

In concern to the uncertain neural signature of the cerebellum in syntax processing, we investigated the Syntactic Positive Shift (SPS) for sentences with syntax violations in patients with cerebellar damage. In opposite to controls, patients showed no SPS around 300-650ms for syntax violations. Interestingly, Minimum-Norm analysis of SPS revealed increased activity in supramarginal and homologous Broca area for syntax violations in patients with cerebellar infarction. Overall, our findings support the still growing knowledge of the involvement of the cerebellum in cerebral networks in syntact
