Language and "Theory of Mind" development of bilingual and monolingual children in Bulgaria.

Children from Bulgaria (N = 120) were tested on language and Theory of Mind (ToM) development. Sixty were ethnic bilingual Turkish children, and 60 were monolingual ethnic Bulgarian children. The age of the children varied between 3;6 to 5;0 years old. Both groups of children in the study were tested in their mother tongues (Turkish and Bulgarian); the Turkish children were also tested in their second language (L2)-Bulgarian, with a language test and Theory of Mind test. Theory of Mind was tested with classical tasks plus a non-verbal ToM task, and the language test comprised measures of wh-co

First Detection of Rhodococcus equi in a Foal in Bulgaria-A Case Report.

This case report describes the following scenario: A 56-day-old Arabian filly presented with classical symptoms of respiratory distress and a rapidly deteriorating condition, despite intensive antimicrobial treatment, resulting in death. The post-mortem examination revealed severe bronchopneumonia with characteristic disseminated pus-containing nodules. Microbiological tests and PCR confirmed the presence of R. equi carrying the virulence-associated protein A (VapA) gene. The isolate was sensitive to macrolides and fluoroquinolones but showed resistance or intermediate susceptibility to severa

Clinical manifestations and diagnostic approaches in cases of canine leishmaniasis in Bulgaria.

Leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease found in many parts of southern Europe, is transmitted in both humans and canines through the bite of phlebotomine sandflies, and can present in a variety of ways, such as cutaneous, mucocutaneous, diffuse, and visceral. In Bulgaria there are endemic areas of canine leishmaniasis, with sporadic cases in humans. However, no detailed studies of the animal population and vectors have been performed. Here we describe a few clinical cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis in two districts in western Bulgaria: one endemic and one without previously detected cases in

Reporting adverse events of COVID-19 vaccines: The case of Bulgaria.

As a member state of the European Union, where vaccines against COVID-19 are available and affordable, Bulgaria reports the lowest immunization coverage and the most pronounced vaccine distrust. The present study aimed to assess the self-reported adverse reactions following COVID-19 vaccination as a possible tool to increase the trust in vaccines. A cross-sectional survey-based study, covering 761 vaccinated respondents, was conducted in Plovdiv (469 with an mRNA vaccine and 292 with an adenoviral vector vaccine). Descriptive statistics parametric and non-parametric methods were applied. Stati

Biological dosimetry assessments of a serious radiation accident in Bulgaria in 2011.

In 2011, a serious radiation accident occurred in Stamboliyski, Bulgaria, in an industrial sterilisation facility using very-high-activity (60)Co sources. For the five persons accidentally exposed, biological dosimetry based on dicentric analysis was performed in Sofia and in Paris, where the patients were transferred for treatment. Before completing the chromosomal dose assessment, and for the most exposed person, a preliminary cytogenetic evaluation based on electronically transmitted metaphase images was made. The averaged acute whole-body dose estimates for the five patients ranged from 5.

Spinal muscular atrophy among the Roma (Gypsies) in Bulgaria and Hungary.

Spinal muscular atrophy is one of the most common autosomal recessive disorders, classified into three major clinical forms. It is caused mainly by deletions or gene conversions of the telomeric survival motor neuron gene (SMN1) on human chromosome 5. We have conducted molecular studies of the disorder in genetically isolated Romani (Gypsy) communities in Bulgaria and Hungary, where spinal muscular atrophy appears to have different prevalence and both mild and severe spinal muscular atrophy phenotypes have been diagnosed. We have observed three distinct genetic defects which, in different comb

Isolation and identification of Geotrichum candidum as an etiologic agent of geotrichosis in Bulgaria.

Geotrichosis affects mainly patients with systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus, leukoses, neoplasms etc. Clinically, it is similar to candidiasis and may occur as an oral, vaginal, skin, or systemic infection. Clinical specimens (98 sputa and 67 oral smears) were collected and studied using microscopic examination of Gram stained preparations and culture sampling between 1995 and 1997. Geotrichum candidum was isolated as a single pathogen in 8 sputum and 7 oral smear samples. Ten-day antifungal treatment with Nizoral was applied and resulted in relatively quick clinical improvement. The pr
