SummaryAlkalis can produce severe tissue injury through liquefaction. Since the liquefaction loosens tissue planes and allows deeper penetration of the agent, alkali burns tend to be more severe than acid burns. Alkaline substances ingestion and inhalation frequently causes damage to the upper respiratory and digestive tract. Initial presentation of airway alkali burn includes oropharyngeal pain, dysphagia, hoarseness and stridor. Patients with a clear history of caustic ingestion or inhalation could always receive proper management. In this paper, a middle aged female presented with acute upp

BACKGROUND: After clinical evaluation in the emergency department (ED), facial burn patients are usually intubated to protect their airways. However, the possibility of unnecessary intubation or delayed intubation after admission exists. Objective criteria for the evaluation of inhalation injury and the need for airway protection in facial burn patients are needed.
METHODS: Facial burn patients between January 2013 and May 2016 were reviewed. Patients who were and were not intubated in the ED were compared. All the intubated patients received routine bronchoscopy and laboratory tests to evalu

Extensive burns are severe, life-threatening injuries. Cutaneous burns are often accompanied by injury to inhalation, leading to severe pulmonary problems with a high rate of mortality. Published reports on series of burn patients state that in 2-5% of all (burn) cases, cutaneous thermal injury was accompanied by mechanical injuries such as fractures, closed head injuries, or blunt injuries to chest and abdomen. The care of the burn is often made difficult by concomitant orthopaedic injury, and in a multiple trauma victim, the burn itself often complicates diagnosis and treatment. It is import

OBJECTIVE: Inhalation injury is suspected in patients with facial and neck burn-injuries and in patients who suffered burns in an enclosed space. Inhalation injury is associated with a disappointingly high morbidity and mortality in spite of advances in diagnostics and therapy.Prophylactic antibiotic therapy in patients with diagnosed inhalation injury is still a controversial subject. The epidemiologic characteristics of the burn patients with diagnosed inhalation injury in our clinic receiving prophylactic antibiotic therapy and mortality of these patients will be referred in this study.

BACKGROUND: Steam inhalation therapy is often recommended in the treatment of a common cold. However, it has no proven benefit and may in fact have serious adverse side effects in terms of burn injuries.
AIM: To quantify the human and economic costs of steam inhalation therapy in terms of burn injury.
DESIGN AND SETTING: A prospective database study of all patients admitted to the burn centres (Beverwijk, Groningen, Rotterdam) and the hospital emergency departments in the Netherlands.
METHOD: Number and extent of burn injuries as a result of steam inhalation therapy were analysed, as well a

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a treatment for pulmonary failure from postshock respiratory distress in burned children recently has been shown to salvage patients who were thought to have more than a 90% chance of dying. We describe five burned children in whom severe respiratory failure--not responsive to medical management and maximal ventilatory support--developed, and who underwent ECMO treatment. Three (60%) cases involved flame burns, with significant inhalation injury as diagnosed after a bronchoscopy; mean age was 3 years (2 to 4 years), with a mean total body surface a

INTRODUCTION: Residential fires account for the majority of burn-related injuries and fatalities. Established risk factors for burn injury include male gender, racial minority, children and elderly individuals, poverty, and substandard housing characteristics. In North Carolina, the rate of residential fire injuries and deaths is higher than the national average. Therefore, we sought to describe residential fire hospitalizations at a large regional burn center and describe the neighborhoods in which they live. We hypothesized that patients living in areas with higher Area Deprivation Index (AD

BACKGROUND: In mechanically ventilated burn patients, inhalation injury may increase the risk of lower respiratory tract colonization or infection with potentially pathogenic microorganisms and worsen in-hospital outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the occurrence of potentially pathogenic microorganisms in lower respiratory tract samples and their association with in-hospital mortality in mechanically ventilated patients with and without inhalation injury.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study at a tertiary burn center (2007-2022) including patients who required mechanic

BACKGROUND: Burns that involve the perineum, buttocks and genitals (PBG) have been associated with more challenging therapeutic needs and worse clinical outcomes. We aimed to investigate whether PBG burns are an independent predictor for mortality, morbidity and complications in a large, heterogenous patient collective and in comparison to patients without PBG burns.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients admitted to a level one burn center between August 2014 and July 2022 were included and stratified based on the presence of PBG burns on admission (PBG & control group = CTR). Demographic baseline d

Burns affecting the head, face, and neck region present challenging anatomical, functional, and aesthetic consequences. However, data comparing these injuries with other burn areas are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with isolated scalp, face, and neck burns, those with scalp, face, and neck burns involving additional body regions, and those without scalp, face, and neck involvement. Following Ethics Committee approval, pediatric patients (0-18 years) admitted to tertiary burn centers between 1August 2019 a

The use of methamphetamine (MA) as a recreational drug has increased exponentially in recent years, resulting in an emergence of clandestine laboratories. Consequently, the frequency with which burn centers across the country are admitting patients injured as a consequence of the volatile manufacturing process of MA is increasing. This study focused on comparing outcomes between burn patients injured secondary to MA laboratory explosions and patients sustaining burns from other mechanisms. All patients identified to have suffered burns secondary to MA laboratory explosions between 1998 and 200

The American Burn Association recommends that patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis-Stevens Johnson syndrome (TEN-SJS) or burn inhalation injuries would benefit from admission or transfer to a burn center (BC). This study examines to what extent those criteria are observed within a regional burn network. Hospital discharge data from 2000 to 2010 was obtained for all hospitals within the South Florida regional burn network. Patients with International Classification of Disease-9th revision discharge diagnoses for TEN-SJS or burn inhalation injury and their triage destination were compared us

INTRODUCTION: Hospital length of stay (LOS) is utilized to estimate resource utilization and quality of care. In burns the LOS estimation is 1day per percent total body surface area burn (1day/%TBSA). Our purpose was to evaluate the 1day/%TBSA burn rule and develop simple accurate formulas to predict LOS.
METHODS: The American Burn Association National Burn Repository (NBR) from 2000 to 2013 was utilized to collate data on patients >18 years. We divided 106,543 records in half, utilizing one set to develop a model (training set) and the other to test the model (test set). We calculated the di

The aim of this study was to investigate characteristics, outcomes and risk factors for death from burn in preschool children. A retrospective study was conducted on 3688 preschool burn children admitted to the National Burn Hospital from 1/1/2016 to 31/12/2018. Collected data included patient demographics and burn characteristics. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was conducted to determine independent risk factors for death. Results showed that preschool children accounted for 78.8% of total admitted burn children. The main causal agent was scald. Boys were predominant, and 76.5% patients

Smoke inhalation, defined as airway or pulmonary parenchymal injury resulting from the inhalation of toxic combustion products, presents with a wide range of severity in patients with and without skin burns. In patients with severe injuries, the diagnosis is obvious on the basis of the history and clinical presentation; in patients with less severe injuries or those in whom the clinical consequences are delayed, diagnostic precision is difficult because diagnostic clues provide only indirect information. There is no specific treatment so diagnosis is not critical for patient management. Patien

BACKGROUND: Home remedies such as steam inhalation are often considered a means to alleviate symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). While little evidence supports this practice, steam inhalation remains popular despite posing a risk of burn injury, especially amongst children. A retrospective review was conducted of paediatric patients referred for the treatment of burn injuries caused by such home remedies at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, between 2010 and 2024.
METHODS: Data from the NSW Statewide Burns Injury Service and a review of

INTRODUCTION: Inhalation injury is an important determinant of outcome in patients with major burns. However the diagnostic criteria remain imprecise, preventing objective comparisons of published data. The aims were to evaluate the utility of an inhalation score based on mucosal injury, while assessing separately the oro-pharyngeal sphere (ENT) and tracheobronchial tree (TB) in patients admitted to the ICU with a suspicion of inhalation injury.
METHODS: Prospective observational study in 100 patients admitted with suspicion of inhalation injury among 168 consecutive burn admissions to the IC
