Epidemic dysentery caused by Shigella dysenteriae type 1: a sentinel site surveillance of antimicrobial resistance patterns in Burundi.

Annual epidemics of bacillary dysentery have been a public health problem in Burundi for the last 14 years. Recent civil unrest, resulting in the displacement of large numbers of people into refugee settlements, has aggravated the situation. We report the results of a nationwide, health-centre based, sentinel site survey to check the drug resistance of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (Sd1), the causal organism of such epidemics. Shigella spp. (of which 97% were Sd1) were isolated from 73% of the 126 specimens collected from six main sites around the country. There was no difference in culture resu

Latent class analysis to evaluate performance of point-of-care CCA for low-intensity Schistosoma mansoni infections in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Kato-Katz examination of stool smears is the field-standard method for detecting Schistosoma mansoni infection. However, Kato-Katz misses many active infections, especially of light intensity. Point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) is an alternative field diagnostic that is more sensitive than Kato-Katz when intensity is low, but interpretation of CCA-trace results is unclear. To evaluate trace results, we tested urine and stool specimens from 398 pupils from eight schools in Burundi using four approaches: two in Burundi and two in a laboratory in Leiden, the Netherlands.

Day-to-day fluctuation of schistosome circulating antigen levels in serum and urine of humans infected with Schistosoma mansoni in Burundi.

Day-to-day fluctuations of both circulating anodic antigen (CAA) and circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) in serum and urine were examined simultaneously in a group of Schistosoma mansoni-infected individuals from Burundi and compared with each other and with fecal egg count fluctuations. Significant correlations were found between fecal egg counts and circulating antigens (CAA and CCA) and between circulating antigen levels in serum and urine samples. The cumulative percentage of positive results after three samplings was highest for urine CCA detection, followed by fecal egg counts, serum CCA,

Control of Schistosoma mansoni and intestinal helminths: 8-year follow-up of an urban school programme in Bujumbura, Burundi.

Annual selective chemotherapy with praziquantel was implemented in primary schools in the endemic suburbs of Bujumbura from 1984 to 1992. During the first 6-year period, the overall prevalence among pupils decreased from 23.3% to 9.1%, a reduction of 61%. During the following 2-year period, in which only children from the 1st, 4th and 6th grade were examined in two of the four endemic suburbs (maintenance strategy), the prevalence decreased further to 6.4% or a 73% reduction from the beginning of the programme. The impact of annually repeated selective chemotherapy was more important on the in

Lack of knowledge of stakeholders in the pork value chain: Considerations for transmission and control of Taenia solium and Toxoplasma gondii in Burundi.

Taenia solium and Toxoplasma gondii are important foodborne zoonotic parasites that cause substantial health and economic impacts worldwide. In Burundi, there was a lack of data on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of stakeholders in the pork value chain. To fill this gap, this study aimed to assess the knowledge of stakeholders in the pork value chain regarding T. solium and T. gondii infections and identify health-seeking routes and factors contributing to parasitic transmissions. A mixed methods study was conducted in Bujumbura city, Kayanza, and Ngozi provinces from January 10 to Apr

Prevalence of tick-transmitted pathogens in cattle reveals that Theileria parva, Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale are endemic in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) constitute a major constraint for livestock development in sub-Saharan Africa, with East Coast fever (ECF) being the most devastating TBD of cattle. However, in Burundi, detailed information is lacking on the current prevalence of TBDs and on the associated economic losses from mortality and morbidity in cattle as well as the costs associated with TBD control and treatment. The aim of this study was, therefore, to assess the prevalence and spatial distribution of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in cattle across the major agro-ecological zones (AEZs) in Burund

Predictive and epidemiologic modeling of the spatial risk of human onchocerciasis using biophysical factors: a case study of Ghana and Burundi.

Although recent efforts taken have substantially contained human onchocerciasis in many African countries, published reports indicate a recrudescence of the disease. To understand this problem, biophysical factors that favor the establishment of human onchocerciasis in Ghana and Burundi-countries identified as threat locations of recrudescence for neighboring countries-were analyzed. Data pertaining to the prevalence of human onchocerciasis in both countries was obtained from published sources. Findings in this study suggest that there was a gradient in prevalence of onchocerciasis in geograph

[Sociocultural aspects of albinism in Sub-Saharan Africa: mutilations and ritual murders committed in east Africa (Burundi and Tanzania)].

This report presents an overview of the many sociocultural prejudices confronting albinos and their parents in Sub-Saharan Africa at each stage of life (infancy, adolescence, and adulthood). The birth of an albino child to two black parents has always been an enigma for African peoples. French-speaking and English-speaking populations in Central, East and South African countries have invented numerous myths to account for this event. Albinos are believed to possess good and evil magical powers. On the white magic side, some organs are believed to confer luck, health, and prosperity. For this r

Radiographic abnormalities in tuberculosis and risk of coexisting human immunodeficiency virus infection. Methods and preliminary results from Bujumbura, Burundi.

We evaluated the age profile and chest radiographic abnormalities in 158 patients from Bujumbura, Burundi, with new-onset intrathoracic tuberculosis (pulmonary, pleural, or hilar/mediastinal adenopathy), to identify features that were associated with and would allow prediction of HIV seropositivity or seronegativity. Using agreed-upon criteria and prepared reporting forms, initial chest radiographs were reviewed by three readers, first independently and then at a consensus conference. Of the 158 patients, 105 (66%) were HIV seropositive and 53 patients were seronegative. Seropositive subjects

Prevalence and factors associated with anaemia in children aged 6-24 months living a high malaria transmission setting in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: In very young children, anaemia has been linked to increased morbidity, mortality and poor cognitive development. Although Burundi has a high burden of anaemia, which may be worsened by the high burden of malaria, little is known about the extent of the problem in very young children who are most at risk of severe disease. We estimated the prevalence, and assessed the factors associated with anaemia in children aged 6-24 months using baseline data collected as part of an on-going study evaluating the effect of Micronutrient supplementation on anaemia and cognition among children in

Treatment of Vesico-Vaginal Fistula by General Practitioners trained in Fistula Repair owing to a lack of surgeons in rural areas in Burundi.

Our objective was to assess the contribution of general practitioners trained in fistula repair in Burundi. We conducted a retrospective, descriptive study, collecting 70 cases from June 2020 to May 2021 at Gitega Regional Hospital, 47.1% being under 30 years old, 77.1% of whose fistulae were successfully repaired with lasting continence regained within six months. This demonstrates that training of general practitioners in vesico-vaginal fistula repair has filled a gap resulting from the lack of surgeons in Burundi.

Diarrhoea prevalence in children under five years of age in rural Burundi: an assessment of social and behavioural factors at the household level.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea is the second leading cause of child mortality worldwide. Low- and middle-income countries are particularly burdened with this both preventable and treatable condition. Targeted interventions include the provision of safe water, the use of sanitation facilities and hygiene education, but are implemented with varying local success. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of and factors associated with diarrhoea in children under five years of age in rural Burundi. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 551 rural households in northwestern Burundi. Areas of i

Comparison of cohort characteristics in Central Africa International Epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS and Demographic Health Surveys: Rwanda and Burundi.

Clinical health record data are used for HIV surveillance, but the extent to which these data are population representative is not clear. We compared age, marital status, body mass index, and pregnancy distributions in the Central Africa International Databases to Evaluate AIDS (CA-IeDEA) cohorts in Burundi and Rwanda to all people living with HIV and the subpopulation reporting receiving a previous HIV test result in the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data, restricted to urban areas, where CA-IeDEA sites are located. The impact of an 8-year mass drug administration programme on prevalence, intensity and co-infections of soil-transmitted helminthiases in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are amongst the most prevalent infections in the world. Mass drug administration (MDA) programmes have become the most commonly used national interventions for endemic countries to achieve elimination. This paper aims to describe the effect of an 8-year MDA programme on the prevalence, intensity of infection and co-infection of STH in Burundi from 2007 to 2014 and critically appraise the trajectory towards STH elimination in the country. RESULTS: Annual STH parasitological surveys (specifically, a "pilot study" from 2007 to 2011, an "exte

Barriers in the Delivery of Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care in Post-Conflict Africa: Qualitative Case Studies of Burundi and Northern Uganda.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity rates are particularly grim in conflict, post-conflict and other crisis settings, a situation partly blamed on non-availability and/or poor quality of emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) services. The aim of this study was to explore the barriers to effective delivery of EmONC services in post-conflict Burundi and Northern Uganda, in order to provide policy makers and other relevant stakeholders context-relevant data on improving the delivery of these lifesaving services. METHODS: This was a qualitative comparative case study
