Elimination kinetics of the tobacco-specific biomarker and lung carcinogen 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol.

4-(Methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) is tobacco specific and has a longer half-life than other tobacco biomarkers studied thus far. An accurate measurement of the NNAL half-life is important for optimal use to assess exposure to tobacco smoke. We determined the half-life of NNAL in urine in eight daily smokers on a clinical research ward and in five occasional smokers in a real-life environment. Total NNAL in urine was monitored for 14 days in daily smokers after stopping smoking and for up to 60 days in occasional smokers. The average half-life for the terminal phase in the da

Impact of butanol and hexanol on RCCI engine efficiency and emission characteristics using sapota oil methyl ester and response surface methodology.

This research explores the performance, emissions, and combustion behavior of a dual-fuel Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) engine fueled with sapota oil methyl ester (SOME) blended with butanol, hexanol, and diesel. Sapota oil methyl ester, a still less-researched biodiesel, is evaluated for its synergistic effect when blended with oxygenated additives. Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM), some of the fuel blends like a base blend (B20D80) and others like B20BU10D70 and B20HEX10D70 were compared to enhance engine efficiency and emissions. The findings show that Brake Ther

n-Butanol Fraction of Dioscorea dumetorum Tuber Aqueous Extract Exhibited Potent Antimalarial Activity in Plasmodium berghei-infected Mice.

PURPOSE: Dioscorea dumetorum (locally known as Esuru {Yoruba tribe of Nigeria}) has been claimed to be used in folk medicine for the management of malaria without information on the anti-plasmodial rich fraction. It is against this background that the current study was designed to provide information on the anti-plasmodial rich fraction of Dioscorea dumetorium tubers. METHODS: The n-hexane (nHF), ethylacetate (EAF), and n-butanol (nBF) fractions obtained from D. dumetorum tubers were screened for anti-plasmodial activity. The most potent fraction, nBF, was further subjected to column chromato

Transcriptomics analysis reveals the effect of Pulsatilla decoction butanol extract on endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisome function of Candida albicans in hyphal state.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The traditional Chinese medicine formula known as Pulsatilla decoction was utilized to treat conditions such as bacterial dysentery, ulcerative colitis, and fungal infections like vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) caused by Candida albicans (C. albicans). In our prior research, it was shown that the n-butanol extract from Pulsatilla Decoction (BEPD) exhibited effective inhibition of C. albicans. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism by which BEPD hinders hyphal growth, a critical virulence factor of C. albicans, remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: In the present study,

4-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanol (rhododendrol)-induced melanocyte cytotoxicity is enhanced by UVB exposure through generation of oxidative stress.

4-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanol (rhododendrol, RD), a skin-whitening agent, was reported to cause skin depigmentation in some users, which is attributed to its cytotoxicity to melanocyte. It was reported that cytotoxicity to melanocyte is possibly mediated by oxidative stress in a tyrosinase activity-dependent manner. We examined the effect of UV radiation (UVR) on RD-induced melanocyte cytotoxicity as an additional aggravating factor. UVR enhanced RD-induced cytotoxicity in normal human epidermal melanocytes (NHEMs) via the induction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Increased generation of

Substrate-pocket reshaping of an (R)-selective transaminase enables efficient asymmetric synthesis of (R)-3-amino-1-butanol.

(R)-Selective ω-transaminases are valuable biocatalysts for the synthesis of chiral amines and pharmaceutical intermediates, but their practical application is often limited by insufficient catalytic efficiency, poor operational stability and unfavorable reaction equilibrium. Here, an Actinomycete-derived (R)-selective ω-transaminase, AcTA, was engineered for the asymmetric reductive amination of 4-hydroxy-2-butanone to produce (R)-3-amino-1-butanol. Through a combination of molecular modeling, alanine scanning, consensus analysis and iterative saturation mutagenesis, the substrate-binding poc

Depigmentation of the skin induced by 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanol is spontaneously re-pigmented in brown and black guinea pigs.

Chemically induced depigmentation of the skin, which occurs following exposure (application or inhalation) to a depigmenting agent, is a disease with clinical findings similar to vitiligo. Recently, skin depigmentation possibly resulting from exposure to 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanol (HPB) was reported in humans. However, the role of HPB as the causative material of this skin depigmentation was not clear. To evaluate whether HPB has the potential for skin depigmentation, we characterized its effects on the skin of pigmented guinea pigs. Following exposure to 30% HPB 3 times/day for about 20 da

Metabolic engineering of Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824 for the high-yield production of a biofuel composed of an isopropanol/butanol/ethanol mixture.

Clostridium acetobutylicum was metabolically engineered to produce a biofuel consisting of an isopropanol/butanol/ethanol mixture. For this purpose, different synthetic isopropanol operons were constructed and introduced on plasmids in a butyrate minus mutant strain (C. acetobutylicum ATCC 824 Δcac15ΔuppΔbuk). The best strain expressing the isopropanol operon from the thl promoter was selected from batch experiments at pH 5. By further optimizing the pH of the culture, a biofuel mixture with almost no by-products was produced at a titer, a yield and productivity never reached before, opening t

Partition behavior of surfactants, butanol, and salt during application of density-modified displacement of dense non-aqueous phase liquids.

Density-modified displacement (DMD) is a recent approach for removal of trapped dense NAPL (DNAPL). In this study, butanol and surfactant are contacted with the DNAPL to both reduce the density as well as release the trapped DNAPL (perchloroethylene: PCE). The objective of the study was to determine the distribution of each component (e.g., butanol, surfactant, water, PCE) between the original aqueous and PCE phases during the application of DMD. The results indicated that the presence of the surfactant increased the amount of n-butanol required to make the NAPL phase reach its desired density

Breakthrough behavior of 17.5 mol% water in methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and t-butanol vapors passed over corn grits.

Ground corn is now used in industry as an adsorbent to remove water from ethanol vapors. It is stable and inexpensive at 10 cents/lb (22 cents/kg). For regeneration it requires less than 2000 Btu/gal of 190 proof ethanol processed. If necessary, it could be readily saccharified and fermented into ethanol after use. This renewable resource has further exciting potential as an inexpensive adsorbent for water removal from other alcohols, including methanol, isopropanol, and t-butanol. Water sorption capacity in a fixed bed, nonisothermal adsorption column appears to be a function of the heat capa
