Two Cases of Singular Sacral S1 Butterfly Vertebra.

A butterfly vertebra is an uncommon but clinically and radiologically significant pathology. The etiological factor of this pathology is a congenital defect in the formation of the vertebral body during embryogenesis, resulting in a cleft within the vertebral body that, in an X-ray, resembles the shape of a butterfly. Butterfly vertebrae are most often found in the thoracic and lumbar spine and more rarely in the sacral region. The clinical manifestations of this condition do not differ from the symptoms of other diseases, and it may also be asymptomatic. Only the recognition of its characteri

Indications and Evolution of the Butterfly Graft in Nasal Valve Repair.

Persistent nasal airway obstruction from inadequately addressed nasal valve compromise is common. Many techniques exist to perform nasal valve repair. Historically, spreader grafts are the most commonly used, despite a relative lack of evidence demonstrating its superiority over other methods. The butterfly graft is an alternative method of nasal valve repair and detailed surgical description from over 20 years of innovation follows in this section. There is growing evidence to suggest that the butterfly graft may be superior to spreader grafts with similar acceptability of the esthetic outcom

Mate-guarding success depends on male investment in a butterfly.

Males of many insects, including butterflies, produce mate-guarding devices, such as mating plugs, to prolong guarding and prevent future female matings in the male's absence. In a few butterflies, large external mate-guarding devices, that is, sphragides, occur. Gór et al. (Behaviour, 160, 2023 and 515-557) found conspicuously large size and morphological variation of mate-guarding devices within a single population of the potentially polyandrous Clouded Apollo (Parnassius mnemosyne, L.) butterfly. They termed the externally visible male-produced devices as Copulatory opening APpendices (CAP)

Ileus as a complication of butterfly wing disease case report.

Epidermolysis bullosa or butterfly wing disease is a rare genetic disorder of connective tissue associated with the formation of blisters. The clinical manifestations are very diverse and affect not only the skin cover, but also mucosal surfaces of the gastrointestinal, urogenital and respiratory systems. A large proportion of patients suffer from severe constipation with the development of megacolon. The case report describes intestinal obstruction in a patient with a dystrophic form of epidermolysis bullosa which required surgical treatment.

Microscopic versus Endoscopic Inlay Butterfly Cartilage Tympanoplasty.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty makes the graft easy, and reduces operating time. The present study aimed to investigate the outcomes of microscopic versus endoscopic inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, the outcomes of 63 patients who underwent inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty with small to medium chronic tympanic membrane perforation were evaluated. Twenty-four patients underwent conventional microscopic tympanoplasty and 39 underwent endoscopic tympanoplasty. The outcomes were analyzed in terms

Borrelia Lymphocytoma Mimicking Butterfly Rash in a Pediatric Patient.

A 5-year-old girl presented with a facial butterfly rash that persisted for 5 months without arthralgia, fever, malaise, photosensitivity, or other symptoms. Lupus erythematosus was clinically suspected. All blood tests were negative or within normal values. Skin biopsy showed a dense nodular superficial and deep inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes that reaches subcutaneous tissue. The most striking histopathological finding was plasma cells with some perifollicular accentuation. Borrelia polymerase chain reaction assay of the tissue was positive, and we made the diagnoses of borrelia lymph

The effect of inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty technique on compliance.

CONCLUSION: IBCT technique should be preferred owing to its high graft survival rate and ABG gain. While no significant difference was found in middle ear pressures between ears that underwent IBCT and normal ears, compliance values were found to be decreased in patients undergoing IBCT. However, the lack of correlation between ABG gain and compliance values indicated that compliance increase had no effect on post-operative ABG results. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare tympanometric and audiological parameters in patients undergoing inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplast

CpPEt2 As4 -An Organic-Substituted As4 Butterfly Compound.

CpPEt2 As4 (CpPEt =C5 (4-EtC6 H4 )5 ) (1) is synthesized by the reaction of CpPEt. radicals with yellow arsenic (As4 ). In solution an equilibrium of the starting materials and the product is found. However, 1 can be isolated and stored in the solid state without decomposition. As4 can be easily released from 1 under thermal or photochemical conditions. From powder samples of CpPEt2 As4 , yellow arsenic can be sublimed under rather mild conditions (T=125 °C). A similar behavior for the P4 -releasing agent was determined for the related phosphorus compound CpBIG2 P4 (2; CpBIG =C5 (4-nBuC6 H4 )5

E4 Butterfly Complexes (E=P, As) as Chelating Ligands.

The coordination properties of new types of bidentate phosphane and arsane ligands with a narrow bite angle are reported. The reactions of [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ,η(1:1) -P4 )] (1 a) with the copper salt [Cu(CH3 CN)4 ][BF4 ] leads, depending on the stoichiometry, to the formation of the spiro compound [{{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ3 ,η(1:1:1:1) -P4 )}2 Cu](+) [BF4 ](-) (2) or the monoadduct [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ3 ,η(1:1:2) -P4 ){Cu(MeCN)}](+) [BF4 ](-) (3). Similarly, the arsane ligand [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ,η(1:1) -As4 )] (1 b) reacts with [Cu(CH3 CN)4 ][BF4 ] to give [{{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ3 ,η(1:1:1:1) -As4

Butterfly vertebra. A case report and a short review of the literature.

A butterfly vertebra is a rare congenital anomaly, encountered as isolated finding or as part of syndromic diseases. We report a case of a 40-year- old female presenting with low back pain and sciatica due to 'butterfly' dysplasia of the first sacral vertebra. This novel case includes posterolateral displacement of the completely separated hemivertebrae, causing left lateral recess stenosis and compression of S1 nerve root. Additionally, we conducted a short review of the literature. Few cases are reported in literature. Only one refers to a sacral vertebra. There is no previous case of a butt

Nasal tip volume analysis after butterfly graft.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate postoperative changes of the nasal tip in patients who underwent internal nasal valve reconstruction with the auricular cartilage butterfly graft. It is believed that this graft may alter the nasal tip appearance, potentially limiting the technique's broad use despite its proven efficacy. METHODS OR DESIGN: A retrospective chart and photograph review, between 2005 and 2009, identified 157 patients who underwent butterfly grafting without other tip modifications at a single institution by 1 surgeon. Changes in supratip projection were measured in

Functional and practical outcomes of inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: For tympanoplasty, the most common grafting materials are the temporalis fascia or perichondrium; however, both require incision of the canal skin, which carries a risk of morbidity and the need for postoperative care. Inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty, by which the perforation edges are refreshed and a cartilage is inserted through the perforation without canal incision, makes the graft easy, and reduces operating and recovery time. We analyze the outcome of inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 112 patients who underwent tympano

Letter: Adult measles with a butterfly rash-like appearance.

Butterfly rash is characterized by symmetrical erythema and erythematous papules and plaques grouped on the bilateral cheeks and nose, commonly found in lupus erythematosus. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease, characterized by high fever, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, and Koplik spots, which precede generalized maculo-papular rashes. We report an adult case of measles, accompanied by butterfly rash. A 20-year-old woman came to our hospital with a butterfly rash-like eruption on the face, high fever, and arthralgia. The eruption had appeared on the nose and both cheeks three days bef

Butterfly cartilage graft inlay tympanoplasty for large perforations.

OBJECTIVE: Butterfly graft inlay tympanoplasty is a well-established technique for the repair of small perforations. However, the efficacy of the technique for medium and large tympanic membrane perforations remains unknown. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Postauricular tympanoplasty and tympanomastoidectomy using a large butterfly cartilage inlay graft (>4 mm diameter to total drum replacement) were analyzed in 90 pediatric patients (99 ears). RESULTS: Patient ages ranged from 2 to 20 years; mean follow-up duration was 27.6 months. Successful closure occurred in 92% of th

Genetic heterogeneity of butterfly-shaped pigment dystrophy of the fovea.

PURPOSE: Butterfly-shaped macular dystrophy (BSMD) has so far only been associated with mutations in the peripherin/RDS gene. The initial aim of our study was to investigate the peripherin/RDS gene as the causative gene in a family with BSMD. Subsequently the putative involvement of the ROM-1 gene, 4 genes expressed in cone photoreceptors, all known non-syndromic macular, retinal pigment epithelium and choroidal dystrophy loci, all known Leber congenital amaurosis loci and all known non-syndromic congenital and stationary retinal disease loci was examined. METHODS: Thirteen members from the o
