C-reactive protein associated with periodontitis in a Thai population.

AIM: C-reactive protein (CRP) has been implicated as a possible mediator of the association between periodontitis and several systemic diseases. Previous studies suggest an association between increased CRP levels and periodontitis predominantly in Caucasians. This study evaluated the associations of chronic periodontitis and Porphyromonas gingivalis with CRP in systemically healthy Thai adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Serum high-sensitivity CRP was measured in 21 generalized periodontitis, 62 localized periodontitis, and 38 periodontally healthy control subjects. P. gingivalis in subgingival p

C-reactive protein level in severe stenosis of cerebral arteries.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) as a non-specific inflammatory biomarker has been demonstrated to actively contribute to all stages of atherogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between CRP concentrations and the severity of stenosis of cerebral arteries. METHODS: Lipid parameters and CRP levels were measured in the sera of 119 patients with stenosis of the extracranial cerebral arteries established by angiography and compared with the control group, with a normal appearance of the cerebral arteries on ultrasound examination. CRP concentrations were determined b

Air pollution and serum C-reactive protein concentration in children.

BACKGROUND: Few biological markers that allow evaluation of the effects of air pollution on human health have been identified. This study evaluated the association of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration in children with their respiratory symptoms and air pollution. METHODS: Respiratory symptoms and serum concentrations of CRP were examined in 2,094 school children living in 3 communities with different concentrations of air pollutants in Chiba Prefecture, Japan in 2001. The relationships between serum CRP concentration and sex, age, respiratory symptoms, and various environmental fac

C-reactive protein and glycemic control in adults with diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence suggests that poor glycemic control is significantly associated with the development of macrovascular complications of diabetes. Studies have indicated that C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between CRP and HbA(1c) in a large national sample of individuals with diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A nationally representative sample of noninstitutionalized U.S. adults aged 17 years and over with nongestational diabetes was derived from the National Health and Nutr

C-reactive protein: the pawn has been promoted to queen.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the acute phase reactants that can increase its serum level up to 100- fold during systemic inflammation. Its clinical use was limited in the past because of its lack of specificity in differentiating infection from other inflammatory processes. With the advent of a high sensitivity assay, CRP was found to be a superb predictor in identifying apparently healthy men and women at risk for developing future cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes. CRP's predictive power is most likely due to its stability, reproducibility, and proatherogenic pro

Predictive values of serial C-reactive protein in neonatal sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Infection is one of the major problems in neonates. The diagnosis of neonatal septicemia is difficult to establish based on the clinical criteria alone. However, empirical treatment should not be delayed because of the high mortality. Laboratory tests used to support diagnosis have shown variable predictive values. C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute phase protein, increases in inflammatory disorders and tissue injury. Serial CRP have been shown to be more useful than a single measured CRP in the diagnostic evaluation of neonates with suspected infection. OBJECTIVES: 1. To evaluate

Maternal and neonatal C-reactive protein after interventions during delivery.

To evaluate the effects of interventions during delivery on the maternal and neonatal C-reactive protein (CRP) we prospectively measured CRP by immunoturbidometry in 238 mother-infant pairs (179 normal vaginal deliveries, 36 cesarean sections and 23 vacuum extractions) at 24 and 72 hours after delivery. We additionally measured CRP in peripheral maternal and neonatal blood immediately after birth in 29 uncomplicated vaginal deliveries. CRP values in the mothers and their offspring were low at birth, but rose significantly during the first day after vaginal delivery. Cesarean section induced a

[C-reactive protein in the differential diagnosis of infectious meningitis].

The authors have determined quantitatively the reactive C-protein in the serum of twenty patients suffering from acute bacterial meningitis and ten patients suffering from viral meningitis. The values observed, that are higher significantly in the bacterial meningitis, permit to affirm that reactive C-protein is an useful test in the differential diagnosis between bacterial and viral meningitis.

Circulating human C-reactive protein binds very low density lipoproteins.

Native human CRP in solution formed complexes with the abnormal lipoprotein beta-VLDL in serum of patients with type III hyperlipoproteinaemia. CRP also formed complexes in sera from individuals with type IV and type V hyperlipoproteinaemia. The binding was calcium-dependent and inhibitable by free phosphoryl choline. No complexes were demonstrable in sera containing high LDL levels from cases of type IIa hyperlipoproteinaemia. Addition of isolated beta-VLDL, but not of isolated LDL, to acute phase normolipoproteinaemic serum caused the appearance of soluble CRP-lipoprotein complexes. In contr

C-reactive protein (CRP) in early diagnosis of neonatal septicemia.

The usefulness of CRP in early detection of neonatal septicemia/meningitis and urinary tract infection was studied in a neonatal unit using a semiquantitative latex-agglutination as a rapid screening method, and electroimmuno assay as reference method for CRP determination. In 94% of non-infected infants CRP was less than or equal to 15 mg/l and 82% had CRP less than 10 mg/l up to 3 days of age. After 3 days of age 96% had CRP less than 10 mg/l. The initial CRP level was increased in 16 out of 18 patients (89%) with bacterial septicemia. Low CRP was seen in one patient with total agranulocytos

C-reactive protein and delayed hypersensitivity in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

In patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), the delayed hypersensitivity found when skin-testing with a panel of memory antigens appeared to be reduced. Since C-reactive protein (CRP) has recently been shown to inhibit various parameters of cellular immunity in vitro, we tested the concentration of CRP in serum from 44 patients with JRA who had previously been tested for delayed hypersensitivity. The mean concentration of CRP in the patients was 32.2mg/l, while in age-and sex-matched controls it was less than 5 mg/l. By scatter diagrams and statistical analysis no association was fou

Cortisol and C-reactive protein interact to predict depressive symptoms.

A growing literature has sought to characterize the physiological correlates of depression, particularly with respect to inflammatory hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal functioning and inflammation. These systems are intricately interrelated, but in relation to depression, have primarily been investigated independently. This study examined interactions between C-reactive protein (CRP), a widely studied inflammatory biomarker, and salivary cortisol in relation to depressive symptoms in a non-clinical sample of 18- to 25-year-olds. We analyzed data from 184 participants (Mage = 19.43 years, SDage =

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein - a biomarker in stroke subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: Higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with cardiovascular events and risk factors for stroke. Studies suggest that high sensitivity-CRP (hs-CRP) could be applied for stroke subtype classification but needs further validation. The utility of hs-CRP in the chronic phase also remains unclear. This study aimed to assess alterations in hs-CRP levels according to stroke subtypes from admission until three months follow-up. METHOD: In this prospective cohort, patients fulfilling diagnostic criteria for ischemic stroke were included in the Copenhagen General Population S

Maternal C-reactive protein and in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles.

Embryo implantation is accompanied by a potent inflammatory response, and a gradient of cytokines and chemokines produced by endometrial cells supports the embryo-endometrial interaction. C-reactive protein (CRP) serves as an early marker of inflammation and recent studies have illustrated that controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) could increase its levels. Interestingly, a high chance of pregnancy has been reported in women who had an elevated CRP level on the day of embryo transfer. It seems an elevated systemic inflammation in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle can increase the imp

Role of cerebrospinal fluid C-reactive protein in tuberculous meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is still a significant health problem worldwide. Central nervous system TB amounts to 10% of all cases of TB. Despite advances in the pharmacological management of TB, the overall outcomes remain poor with significant mortality and morbidity. There are no predictors for neurological outcomes in tuberculosis meningitis (TBM). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) C-reactive protein (CRP) in predicting mortality and neurological outcome in TBM. Method: In this observational study, all patients with TBM were recruited prospectively

Genetic Variation Affects C-Reactive Protein Elevations in Crohn's Disease.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) is a serum marker that is used to measure disease activity in Crohn's disease (CD). However, a subset of CD patients have normal CRP during flares. In rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, genetic variants can restrict CRP elevations during flares. This study sought to determine if common CRP genetic variants affect CRP values during active CD. METHODS: Subjects with CD who participated in the Partners HealthCare BioBank were genotyped for 5 common CRP genetic variants (rs2794520, rs3122012, rs3093077, rs2808635, and rs1800947).
