The importance of dietary calcium and phosphorous in the secondary hyperparathyroidism of patients with early renal failure.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) was evaluated in 157 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). It was noted that HPT developed early in CRF at a time when plasma calcium and phosphorous were within normal limits. As creatinine clearance decreased below 80 mL/m, there was a significant decrease in plasma calcitriol and a slow and progressive significant increment in plasma parathyroid hormone (PTH). The effect of dietary intake of calcium and phosphorous was evaluated in these patients with early renal failure (ERF). They were divided into two groups. Group A was placed on a protein- and p

Appendicular bone mass in children with a high prevalence of low dietary calcium intakes.

We have previously documented evidence of dietary calcium deficiency in black children living in a rural community in the eastern part of South Africa. The present study determined the bone mass of the distal one-third of the radius in a random sample of children living in the same community and compared their bone mass measurements with those of black children living in a similar rural community but without evidence of dietary calcium deficiency. Further, factors (weight, height, serum corrected total calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase [ALP]) that might influence appendicular bone

[A case-control study on colorectal cancer and dietary fiber and calcium of various sources].

A population-based case-control study was conducted in 726 incident cases with colorectal cancer and 1400 controls matched on age and sex in Shanghai, to explore the possible difference in associations between colorectal cancer and dietary fiber and calcium of various sources. The results showed reverse correlation between intake of vegetable fiber and ascending and descending colon cancer and rectal cancer, and between intake of fruit fiber and ascending colon cancer only. Dietary intake of calcium from animal sources could reduce the relative risk of ascending and descending colon cancer. Th

Dietary calcium modifies concentrations of lead and other metals and renal calbindin in rats.

We studied the effects of dietary calcium on kidney, femur, testis, liver, heart and brain concentrations of lead, magnesium, iron, copper, calcium and zinc in rats exposed to lead for 1 y. Renal levels of the 28,000 Da, vitamin D-dependent, calcium-binding protein calbindin-D28K were also measured. Seventy-two weanling male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of nine treatment groups. Rats were fed diets containing 0.1, 0.5 or 2.5% Ca for 52 wk and were simultaneously given either 0, 50 or 100 mg lead/L in their drinking water. Rats fed the 0.1% Ca diet had organ lead concentrat

Prevention of toxemia of pregnancy in Ecuadorian Andean women: experience with dietary calcium supplementation.

Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is a significant cause of low birth weight and maternal and neonatal death around the world. This article reviews work indicating that dietary calcium supplementation can sharply reduce the PIH incidence among pregnant women whose regular diet is calcium-poor. It also describes physiologic conditions prevailing during pregnancy that could explain calcium's major role in PIH--as well as supplemental calcium's great potential for preventing PIH among people with low-calcium diets.

The relationship of dietary calcium to the maintenance of skeletal integrity in man-an interface of endocrinology and nutrition.

Calcium restriction reliably produces osteoporosis in animals, but the impact of dietary calcium on age-related bone loss in man is controversial. The opinion that calcium intake is not clearly related to bone mass or to osteoporosis is well-entrenched in the nutrition literature, and has been influential in setting recommended intakes for the American public. This position rests on the poor correlation between habitual calcium intake and the incidence of osteoporosis in some non-Western countries, and on demonstrations that young men can achieve calcium balance on low intakes. However, such d

Effects of dietary calcium and microbial phytase on the bioavailability of two sources of zinc in broilers.

1. The objective of this study was to test the effect of microbial phytase and calcium (Ca) levels on the Zn bioavailability depending on the Zn source.2. A total of 144, one-day-old broilers received a diet containing 40 mg Zn/kg for 1 week. They were then assigned to one of the eight experimental treatments during 2 weeks. Diets contained 27 mg native Zn and were formulated according to a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design with two added Zn sources (23 mg Zn/kg), sulphate (ZnSO4) or oxide (ZnO); two dietary Ca levels of either 6 (low) or 10 g/kg (moderate); and two microbial phytase levels, of eithe

Simultaneous Quantitation of Boric Acid and Calcium Fructoborate in Dietary Supplements by HPTLC-Densitometry.

The paper describes a new, simple, selective and precise high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method for the simultaneous identification and quantitative determination of boric acid (BA) and calcium fructoborate (CFB) in bulk and tablet/capsule dosage forms of dietary supplements. HPTLC silica gel G 60 F254 precoated glass plates were used as the stationary phase. The mobile phase consisted of 2-propanol-water 8:2 (v/v). The two boron-based compounds were adequately separated with the Rf values of 0.83 ± 0.01 (BA) and 0.59 ± 0.01 (CFB).

[Effects of dietary calcium-deficiency on bone development in growing rats and the mechanism involved].

The effects of calcium on bone development in growing rats were studied by bone histomorphometry and the hormone changes in a model of calcium-deficient rats. Thirty growing Wistar rats were randomly allocated into three groups fed with low calcium diet, calcium-sufficient diet at libitum or pair fed with low calcium diet for 8 weeks. The calcium-deficient rats showed low bone mass, significantly decreased bone density and mineral content. The disorder of bone molding and ultrastructure at the femoral distal diaphysis of the calcium deficient rats were showed by histomorphometric parameters. T

Dietary intake of calcium, magnesium and antioxidants in relation to risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Dietary factors have long been suspected of being risk factors for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but few human studies have been reported. To address several of the dietary hypotheses, a case-control study of risk factors for ALS conducted in New England in 1993-1996 included an abbreviated food frequency questionnaire. We examined the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium and antioxidants among 107 ALS cases and 262 community controls. Overall, these dietary factors were not related to risk of ALS, though modestly protective associations were suggested for magnesium and lycopene.

Dietary lead and calcium: effects on blood pressure and renal neoplasia in Wistar rats.

We examined the potential of increased Ca in the diet to modify the effects of Pb on tissue metal concentrations, blood pressure and the incidence of renal tumours. We randomly assigned 48, 5-wk-old male Wistar rats to one of six treatment groups. They were fed a low (0.2%) or high (4.0%) Ca diet for 31 wk and given 0, 1.0 or 100 micrograms Pb/mL in drinking water. In the low Ca groups, increasing concentrations of Pb produced graded increases in mean blood pressure. Rats receiving 4.0% Ca had higher mean blood pressures than the animals fed the 0.2% Ca diet. The 4.0% Ca diet also caused renal

Influence of dietary calcium level, calcium source, and phytase on bird performance and mineral digestibility during a natural necrotic enteritis episode.

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of Ca source [highly soluble calcified seaweed (HSC) or limestone], phytase supplementation, and dietary levels of Ca on bird performance and mineral digestibility (Ca and P) during a necrotic enteritis (NE) episode. Cobb 500 male broilers were weighed and randomized into 8 treatment groups (9 pens/treatment; 30 birds/pen) at day of hatch. The 21-d trial was designed as a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial, which included 2 dietary levels of Ca (0.6 and 0.9%), 2 Ca sources (limestone or HSC), and 2 levels of an Escherichia coli phytase (0 or 1,000 FT

Interactive effect of dietary calcium and phytase on broilers challenged with subclinical necrotic enteritis: 3. Serum calcium and phosphorus, and bone mineralization.

Calcium is chelated by phytic acid and forms phytate-mineral complexes reducing Ca availability and the ability of phytase to hydrolyze phytate. An increased Ca concentration in the gut favors the activity of Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens). Therefore, it was hypothesized that high dietary calcium with high dietary phytase would decrease serum Ca and P and bone mineralization during necrotic enteritis occurrence. A total of 768 one-day-old Ross 308 male chicks were randomly allocated to 8 treatments with 6 replicate pens, each housing 16 birds. A 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of tre

Review of the dietary reference intake for calcium: where do we go from here?

In this article the science relied on to establish the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) specifically for calcium was examined. The latest dietary recommendations for the essential nutrients significant with respect to their roles in bone metabolism and health were reported in the Dietary Reference Intakes for Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Vitamin D, and Fluoride (1997) (NIM, 1997). For calcium an adequate intake was recommended because insufficient data were available at the time to determine specific Recommended Dietary Allowances. Dietary intake data and the controversies regarding the role

Increased dietary calcium and small bowel resection have opposite effects on colonic cell turnover.

Oral supplements of calcium reduce the mitogenic effects of fatty acids and bile acids on large bowel mucosa. The cytokinetic effects of intraluminal calcium were tested in normal and adapting colonic epithelium. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60) weighting 356.7 +/- 24.9 g were submitted to either an 80 per cent jejuno-ileal resection or simple transection and resuture of the jejunum. Within each group, half the animals had 24 g/l calcium lactate added to the drinking water. Seven weeks postoperatively crypt cell production rate (CCPR) was determined in the lower descending colon.
