Calcium carbonate apatite deposition in the cervical spine with associated vertebral destruction. Case report.

This 52-year-old woman developed crystal deposition disease involving the cervical vertebrae. She presented with symptomatic spinal cord compression secondary to extensive calcified lesions in the posterior elements of the cervical spine. Surgical decompression with posterior fusion was performed. Histological examination showed hardened deposits of calcium carbonate involving the soft tissue, and dissolution of the vertebral bone trabeculae. There was no inflammatory response to these deposits. One year postoperatively the patient developed severe pulmonary disease associated with the collage

The effects of internal fixation on calcium carbonate. Ceramic anterior spinal fusion in dogs.

STUDY DESIGN: An anterior interbody fusion was performed in the canine thoracic spine. Either calcium carbonate or autologous iliac crest bone graft was used to fill a surgically created spinal defect between T7 and T8. Some of the spines were stabilized intraoperatively with anterior instrumentation. Four experimental arthrodesis groups were studied: iliac crest bone graft with or without instrumentation and ceramic with or without instrumentation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of internal fixation on an anterior interbody fusion using calcium carbonate ceramic, and to compare this with

Oral calcium carbonate as phosphate-binder in infants and children with chronic renal failure.

In view of the known toxicity of aluminum, we studied the effects of CaCO3 as an alternative phosphate binder in 12 chronic renal failure (CRF) children during 152 patient-months. Mean (+/- SD) serum creatinine concentration rose during that period from 3.7 +/- 1.8 to 5.1 +/- 3.0 mg/dl. 8 patients received CaCO3 from the start, and 4 were switched from A1(OH)3 after 2 months of interruption. In addition to CaCO3 (0.1-0.3 mg/kg BW) all patients received NaHCO3, and all but two received 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 [1 alpha(OH)D3] or dihydrotachysterol (DHT). Urine and blood variables were checked

Calcium carbonate as a phosphate binder in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing dialysis.

Phosphate binders that contain aluminum are frequently prescribed to treat hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic renal failure, but an accumulation of aluminum can lead to osteomalacia. To evaluate the efficacy of calcium carbonate as an alternative phosphate binder, we studied 20 patients maintained on dialysis during three consecutive periods. In period 1, the patients took aluminum hydroxide for a month (mean dose, 5.6 g per day; range, 1.5 to 14.0). In period 2, they took no phosphate binders for a month, and in period 3, they took calcium carbonate (Os-Cal) for two months (mean dose,

Carbonate-System Perturbation by Invasive Bivalves Threatens Drinking-Water Security in Calcium-Limited Catchments.

Invasive bivalve ecosystem engineers pose an under-recognized threat to drinking-water security. In the Waikato River, New Zealand, rapid establishment of Corbicula fluminea (Asian clam) since their 2023 incursion has depleted dissolved calcium ∼24% below historical baselines through biogenic CaCO3 fixation at ∼14 ± 14 tonnes day-1 (2024-2025) while simultaneously raising alkalinity ∼15-20% through catabolic NH4+/HCO3- excretion. Residence-time mass balances yield a basin-scale population density of 370 ± 323 individuals m-2, consistent with independent field surveys (557 ± 435 individuals m-2

Crystal structure of calcium carbonate coating modulates degradation and bone formation of biodegradable magnesium.

Surface coatings on biodegradable Mg alloys have been extensively explored to inhibit the corrosion of Mg substrate and to promote the bone formation. However, the self-degradation of the coating is rarely seriously considered when it is used to modulate the corrosion of Mg substrate and the osteogenic activity. Based on our previously developed robust CaCO3 coating, considering the stability of different CaCO3 crystalline, the current study evaluates how the crystal structure of CaCO3 coating affects its protection ability to Mg substrate and the corresponding biological response of osteoblas

Absorption, Scintigraphy, Efficacy and Tolerability of Short-Term Calcium Carbonate Supplementation in Healthy Subjects.

Orally administered calcium carbonate tablets are commonly prescribed as a calcium supplement, and their short-term use is popular among the healthy population. However, being a nutritional supplement, the in vitro properties and clinical efficacy of calcium carbonate supplements are sometimes compromised. The present study aimed to assess the absorption, in vivo dispersion, efficacy and tolerance of Gemcal DS tablet following its short-term use for four weeks. Post-dosing, a gradual rise in serum calcium concentration was observed and the peak increment in serum calcium (4.13±0.38 µg/mL) was

Hydrothermal Transformation of Eggshell Calcium Carbonate into Apatite Micro-Nanoparticles: Cytocompatibility and Osteoinductive Properties.

The eggshell is a biomineral consisting of CaCO3 in the form of calcite phase and a pervading organic matrix (1-3.5 wt.%). Transforming eggshell calcite particles into calcium phosphate (apatite) micro-nanoparticles opens the door to repurposing the eggshell waste as materials with potential biomedical applications, fulfilling the principles of the circular economy. Previous methods to obtain these particles consisted mainly of two steps, the first one involving the calcination of the eggshell. In this research, direct transformation by a one-pot hydrothermal method ranging from 100-200 °C was

Calcium carbonate modified urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive for strength enhanced medium density fiberboard production.

This study investigated the improved properties of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) modified urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesive for medium density fiberboard (MDF) production. The CaCO3 modified UF resins were prepared by adding different proportions of CaCO3 to a low molar ratio UF resin at the initial stage of a typical synthetic process of the resin. The physicochemical properties of the resins were measured. The mechanical and environmental performances of the resin-bonded MDF panels were tested. The results show that the viscosity and free formaldehyde content of UF resins with or without CaC

EPR investigation of UV light effect on calcium carbonate powders with different grain sizes.

This study is based on investigation of calcium carbonate powders with different grain sizes exposed to UV light. Calcium carbonate is widely used in many branches of industry, e.g. as a filler for polymer materials; therefore, knowing its properties, among them also its reaction to UV light, is essential. Samples of powdered calcium carbonate with average grain sizes of 69 and 300 nm and 2.1, 6, 16, 25 µm were used in this investigation. Measurements were performed at room temperature using EPR X-band spectrometer, and they have shown the additional signals induced by the light from Hg lamp.

Divisive effect of alcohol-water mixed solvents on growth morphology of calcium carbonate crystals.

Controlling the process of crystal growth is of importance to the biomineralization and materials science. In this work, some novel morphology of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was precipitated in an ethanol-water binary solvent (EWBS) with a CaCl2/Na2CO3 reaction system. For the solutions of CaCl2/Na2CO3 in EWBS, the alcoholization and hydration of Ca2+ and CO3(2-) were discussed from the radial distribution functions by molecular dynamics simulations, and the number density profiles of water molecules around and approximately 15 A away from CO3(2-) were employed to reveal the distribution of wate

Precipitates on granular iron in solutions containing calcium carbonate with trichloroethene and hexavalent chromium.

Mineralogical examination, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and optical microscopy, was conducted on the Fe0-bearing reactive materials derived from long-term column experiments undertaken to assess the treatment capacity of Fe0 under different geochemical conditions. The columns received either deionized water or solutions of differing dissolved calcium carbonate concentrations, together either with trichloroethene (TCE) or hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The major reaction product in the columns receiving deionized water was magnetite-maghemite, and for the

The effects of sevelamer hydrochloride and calcium carbonate on kidney calcification in uremic rats.

The control of serum phosphorus (P) and calcium-phosphate (Ca x P) product is critical to the prevention of ectopic calcification in chronic renal failure (CRF). Whereas calcium (Ca) salts, the most commonly used phosphate binders, markedly increase serum Ca and positive Ca balance, the new calcium- and aluminum-free phosphate binder, sevelamer hydrochloride (RenaGel), reduces serum P without altering serum Ca in hemodialysis patients. Using an experimental model of CRF, these studies compare sevelamer and calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)) in the control of serum P, secondary hyperparathyroidism (SH

Technological testing of calcium carbonate tablets for use in the treatment of renal osteodystrophy.

Samples of calcium carbonate tablets produced by different manufacturers were subjected to various tests in order to evaluate tablet quality parameters, mostly indicative for calcium availability. Indications about tablet suitability for treatment of renal osteodystrophy in uremic patients were also tested. The disintegration test turned out to be the most useful in evaluating calcium carbonate availability from tablets. Samples from several manufacturers varied in their behaviour to disaggregation. The availability of calcium dissolved in gastric fluid and the extent of phosphorus binding app

The effect of bile on the crystallisation of calcium carbonate, a constituent of gallstones.

When calcium and bicarbonate ions were mixed at room temperature (approximately 20 degrees C) to give concentrations of 4 mmol/1 and 21 mmol/1 respectively and the pH of the solution was kept at 8.3, vaterite, a form of calcium carbonate, was precipitated almost immediately as spheres of diameter 45 micron. The crystallisation of this material could be slowed down by adding to the crystallising medium small amounts of pyrophosphate or citrate which often inhibit crystal growth. High concentrations of sodium chloride (90 mmol/1) did not, however, affect the reaction. Very small amounts of gallb

Sevelamer hydrochloride with or without alphacalcidol or higher dialysate calcium vs calcium carbonate in dialysis patients: an open-label, randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Sevelamer hydrochloride was recently proposed as a phosphate binder to prevent hypercalcaemia in place of calcium alkaline salts in dialysis patients. So far, it has been evaluated only in patients receiving calcitriol, without comparison with CaCO(3) alone, although the latter was found to be as effective as the combination of calcitriol and Al(OH)(3) in suppressing parathyroid hormone (PTH) without inducing hypercalcaemia and to have a better lowering effect on serum phosphate. Moreover, this bile salt binder may decrease serum 25-OH vitamin D. Therefore, we compared for 5 months

Controlled Release of Oxygen from Calcium Peroxide in a Weak Acidic Condition by Stabilized Amorphous Calcium Carbonate Nanocoating for Biomedical Applications.

Calcium peroxide (CaO2) has recently attracted much attention as an oxygen-releasing biomaterial for tissue engineering. CaO2 has also been used in cancer therapies, such as photodynamic therapy. However, the uncontrollability of oxygen release after immersion in water is a challenge. Furthermore, the nanoscale surface chemistry of CaO2 on the oxygen release properties under cell culture conditions has not been taken into account in these applications. Herein, we report the stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanocoating on CaO2 in a cell culture medium, which suppressed the reaction

Low-calcium dialysis fluid and oral calcium carbonate in CAPD. A method of controlling hyperphosphataemia whilst minimizing aluminium exposure and hypercalcaemia.

Oral calcium carbonate is an effective phosphate binder in dialysis patients. Its use minimizes aluminium intake, and by maintaining a high-normal serum ionized calcium, suppresses serum parathyroid hormone levels. However, the dose required to control hyperphosphataemia may cause hypercalcaemia. We performed prospective studies in 50 previously undialysed patients starting CAPD (28 study group, 22 control group). Calcium carbonate was the only phosphate binder used in the study group which utilized a low calcium PD fluid (calcium 1.25 mmol/l), whilst the control group used standard PD solutio
