Individual calibration of accelerometers in children and their health-related implications.

This study compared children's physical activity (PA) levels, the prevalence of children meeting current guidelines of ≥60 minutes of daily moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA), and PA-health associations using individually calibrated (IC) and empirical accelerometer cutpoints. Data from 75 (n = 32 boys) 10-12 year old children were included in this study. Clustered cardiometabolic (CM) risk, directly measured cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), anthropometric and 7 day accelerometer data were included within analysis. PA data were classified using Froude anchored IC, Evenson et al. (Evenson, K. R., Ca

Calibrating sensitivity analyses to observed covariates in observational studies.

In medical sciences, statistical analyses based on observational studies are common phenomena. One peril of drawing inferences about the effect of a treatment on subjects using observational studies is the lack of randomized assignment of subjects to the treatment. After adjusting for measured pretreatment covariates, perhaps by matching, a sensitivity analysis examines the impact of an unobserved covariate, u, in an observational study. One type of sensitivity analysis uses two sensitivity parameters to measure the degree of departure of an observational study from randomized assignment. One

[A model of calibrated optic nerve crush injury in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To establish a calibrated optic nerve crush injury model in rats. METHODS: Twenty-eight healthy Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into two groups. Seven rats were in normal control group, i.e. group A. In group B, model of partial optic nerve crush injury group, partial optic nerve crush injury model was induced in the right eyes of another 21 rats by a special designed optic nerve clip with 40-gram holding force at optic nerve 2 mm behind the eyeball clipped for four seconds to partially block the optic nerve axoplasmic transport. The left eyes served as a control. Ac

The extent and implications of sphygmomanometer calibration error in primary care.

AIM: The sphygmomanometer is an essential piece of diagnostic equipment, used in many routine consultations in primary care. Its accuracy depends on correct maintenance and calibration. This study was designed to: (1) assess the maintenance and calibration of sphygmomanometers in use in primary care; (2) assess the clinical, ethical, legal and public health implications of our findings. METHOD: A researcher assessed the accuracy of mercury and aneroid sphygmomanometers in use in 231 English general practices. He also made enquiries about arrangements for the maintenance and calibration of sph

Target size regulates calibre and myelination of sympathetic axons.

Axons in vertebrate peripheral nerves are ensheathed by Schwann cells. For some axons, this sheath consists of a single layer of glial cell cytoplasm and plasma membranes; for other axons, Schwann cells form multilayered myelin. Whether or not a Schwann cell makes myelin is determined by a signal from the axon, but the nature of this signal is not known. Here I show that sympathetic postganglionic axons, which are normally not myelinated, become myelinated when their calibre is increased as a result of increasing the size of the peripheral target they innervate. This result implies that axon c

Calibration model for purple air monitored PM2.5 across the United States.

Accurate monitoring of PM2.5 is vital for understanding air quality and public health impacts. Purple Air sensors (PA) have filled in PM2.5 gaps spatially and temporarily, and are popular for their low cost and real-time monitoring capabilities, but are often questioned for their accuracy. Analysis revealed that PA sensors exhibit systematic biases in PM2.5 measurements, with discrepancies influenced by factors such as humidity, temperature, and sensor drift. To address this, we develop and implement a scalable, operational calibration model for the United States based solely on the PA-reporte

Trustworthy Multi-Modal Ultrasound Fusion via Uncertainty Calibration and Conflict Resolution.

Multi-modal ultrasound combines tissue information from multiple imaging perspectives, enabling more comprehensive lesion assessment. However, conventional multi-view learning methods typically assume uniform modality quality, ignoring variability caused by imaging noise and patient-specific factors. This oversight limits diagnostic reliability, especially when some modalities provide uncertain or conflicting information. To address this, we identify two key challenges in multi-modal ultrasound fusion: 1) how to quantify modality-wise uncertainty, and 2) how to resolve conflicts among predicti

Calibration of physical and mechanical property parameters of broccoli seedling stalks.

This study focuses on the problem of clamping damage during the mechanised transplanting of broccoli seedlings. Based on the physical and mechanical properties of broccoli seedlings, a bonding V2 particle adhesion model was constructed using the discrete element method to accurately simulate the mechanical behaviour of broccoli seedlings during mechanised transplanting. Six contact parameters and five adhesion parameters were selected using a Plackett-Burman(PB) experimental design, and the steepest ascent design was used to explore the effect of these parameters on the shear force and thus ap

Reliable Pseudo-Labeling and Confusion Calibration for Foggy-Scene Semantic Segmentation.

Semantic segmentation in foggy scenes is crucial for autonomous driving systems, yet acquiring annotated real-world foggy data is highly costly. Existing unsupervised domain adaptation methods typically adopt a self-training strategy, adapting models trained under clear-weather conditions to unlabeled foggy target domains and constructing supervision signals via pseudo-labels. However, these methods mainly focus on improving the reliability of target-domain supervision while paying insufficient attention to class confusion caused by the degradation of class discriminability. In fact, the perfo

Motion-Driven Automatic IMU Orientation Calibration via SO(3) Pattern Alignment.

Calibration of body-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs) is essential for accurate motion estimation, yet sensor orientations may drift over time due to slippage or long-term integration errors. This causes an IMU to gradually lose alignment with the body segment on which it is mounted. In this paper, we develop a novel technique for Automatic Calibration-recovering this alignment during normal motion, without a dedicated calibration step. We implement automatic calibration by formulating it as the alignment of motion-induced orientation distributions on SO(3). When the activity being perfor

Micro CT calibration accuracy for pre-clinical studies in ion therapy.

Objective.Accurate estimation of tissue stopping power ratios (SPRs) from computed tomography (CT) data is essential in charged particle therapy (CPT), yet it remains a major source of range uncertainties. While various SPR calibration methods have been developed for clinical CT scanners, they are not tailored to cone beam type Micro CT scanners commonly used in pre-clinical studies involving small animals. This work aims to assess how different clinical SPR calibration methods influence range predictions in small animal CPT pre-clinical trials, evaluated at both the voxel and organ levels.App

Perceptual meta-uncertainty reveals enhanced calibration of sensory confidence in autism.

Atypical metacognition has been suggested to underlie autistic phenotypes, given its role in social cognition and behavioral flexibility. However, no study has quantitatively assessed metacognitive abilities in autism. Here, we measured meta-uncertainty-the noise corrupting estimates of one's own decision uncertainty-in autism. In three experiments, autistic and non-autistic participants (N = 145) performed orientation categorization tasks while simultaneously reporting their choice confidence. By independently manipulating each Bayesian component-sensory uncertainty, prior, and reward-and fit

Pretest Probability in Ophthalmology: Preserving Diagnostic Calibration While Moving Beyond Race.

PURPOSE: Using a Bayesian framework with emphasis on pretest probability, to evaluate the consequences of removing race-based proxies from clinical reasoning without replacing the information they encode with more precise causal predictors. METHODS: Narrative review and conceptual analysis of Bayesian diagnostic reasoning as applied to current recommendations regarding the use of race and ethnicity in medicine and ophthalmology. Examples are presented in which suppression of population-level proxies alters pretest probability estimation and diagnostic calibration. Representative conditions di

Calibration-aware genomic prediction of paratuberculosis serostatus in indigenous Turkish goats.

Paratuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), is a chronic, incurable enteritis of ruminants in which late-onset clinical signs preclude timely intervention, making early genomic stratification a key control lever. We investigated the genetic architecture underlying the host antibody response to MAP - measured as anti-MAP ELISA serostatus - using genome-wide SNP data from 474 animals representing seven indigenous Turkish goat breeds sampled across 11 provinces (237 seropositive, 237 seronegative; estimated true seroprevalence 14.1%). Fourteen architecturally di

Cuffless, calibration-free hemodynamic monitoring with physics-informed machine learning models.

Wearable technologies have the potential to transform ambulatory and at-home hemodynamic monitoring by providing continuous assessments of cardiovascular health metrics and guiding clinical management. However, existing cuffless wearable devices for blood pressure (BP) monitoring often rely on methods lacking theoretical foundations, such as pulse wave analysis or pulse arrival time, making them vulnerable to physiological and experimental confounders that undermine their accuracy and clinical utility. Here, we developed a smartwatch device with real-time electrical bioimpedance (BioZ) sensing

Full Characterisation of Heroin Samples Using Infrared Spectroscopy and Multivariate Calibration.

The analysis of heroin samples, before use in the protected environment of user centra, could be a supplementary service in the context of harm reduction. Infrared spectroscopy hyphenated with multivariate calibration could be a valuable asset in this context, and therefore 125 heroin samples were collected directly from users and analysed with classical chromatographic techniques. Further, Mid-Infrared spectra were collected for all samples, to be used in Partial Least Squares (PLS) modelling, in order to obtain qualitative and quantitative models based on real live samples. The approach show

Infrastructure-Based Vehicle Localization through Camera Calibration for I2V Communication Warning.

In recent years, the research on object detection and tracking is becoming important for the development of advanced driving assistance systems (ADASs) and connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) aiming to improve safety for all road users involved. Intersections, especially in urban scenarios, represent the portion of the road where the most relevant accidents take place; therefore, this work proposes an I2V warning system able to detect and track vehicles occupying the intersection and representing an obstacle for other incoming vehicles. This work presents a localization algorithm based on ima
