Field comparisons of attractants for the screwworm fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a tropical dry forest in Costa Rica.

Field trials were conducted to determine the best attractant for adults of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), in Costa Rica. The five attractants were wounded sentinel sheep, decayed fruit, rotted beef liver, rotted fish, and medium used to rear larvae of this blow fly. Significantly more adults came to rotted liver than any other attractant. No adults were captured in traps baited with rotted fruit. Significantly more males came to beef liver than were captured at other baits; males were rarely encountered at wounds. Ovarian development of females obtained with different attra

DNA Recovery from Forensically Relevant Blow Fly Larvae (Insecta, Diptera, Calliphoridae) Kept in Different Preservative Solutions.

There are still many gaps in knowledge about how different preservative solutions can guarantee sufficient DNA recovery for the taxonomic determination of flies of forensic importance. In the present study, we evaluated the recovery and amplification rates of mitochondrial DNA from larvae of the forensically important blow fly Chrysomya megacephala (F.) (Diptera, Calliphoridae), preserved for up to 47 days in the solutions commonly used in routine forensic investigations. Some larvae (N = 88) were immediately placed in the preservative solution, while another group of larvae (N = 88) was kille

Carnauba wax enhances the insecticidal activity of entomopathogenic fungi against the blowfly Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Blowfly, Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is a problematic synanthropic insect pest, a vector of microbial pathogens, and the causal agent of secondary myiasis. Fungal biopesticides are considered eco-friendly tools, alternative to synthetic pesticides, for the control of arthropod pests; however, to date, little is known about their bioactivity against blowflies. In this study, we assessed the insecticidal activity of three well-known entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria pseudobassiana and Akanthomyces muscarius against L. sericata. In addition, we tested powdered c

Development and age estimation of the intrapuparial period of Phormia regina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) for postmortem interval estimation.

Phormia regina (Meigen, 1826; Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a Holarctic species that rapidly colonizes carcasses and has been used as an indicator for determining the minimum postmortem interval. However, studies using morphological methods to estimate the intrapuparial age of P. regina are lacking. In this study, morphological changes within the puparium were observed under a stereomicroscope at 7 constant temperatures ranging from 16 °C to 34 °C. The intrapuparial period was categorized into 12 substages. Morphological indicators, including compound eyes, mouthparts, antennae, thorax, legs, win

Infestation of humans and non-human primates with Cordylobia rodhaini (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a 'hotspot' of furuncular myiasis.

Lund's fly, Cordylobia rodhaini (Calliphoridae), is an African blowfly considered to be an uncommon cause of furuncular myiasis. Far less is known about C. rodhaini than about the more frequently reported tumbu fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga. From 2011 to 2020, fly larvae were collected and analysed from 11 independent infestations of wild non-human primates and 10 independent infestations of humans (including 1 from this author) in Kibale National Park, Uganda. All 21 larvae were identified morphologically and genetically as C. rodhaini. Larvae from non-human primates were on average 4·5 times

A Case of Myiasis Caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in an Italian Traveler Returning from Senegal.

PURPOSE: Myiases are infestations of human and animal tissues by fly larvae. These conditions are widespread in tropical countries and travelers in those areas are at risk of becoming infested. Although Cordylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard & Berenger-Feraud, 1872) is one of the most common myiasis-causing species, few high-quality images and molecular sequences are available for this fly. We present a case of C. anthropophaga infestation in an Italian patient returning from Senegal, with the aim of increasing both visual and molecular data for this species. METHODS: After removal, the larva wa

Case Report: Outbreak of Nosocomial Myiasis by Cochliomyia macellaria (Diptera, Calliphoridae) in a Hospital in Colima, Mexico.

Myiasis in humans is a disease caused by larvae of various fly families. It mainly occurs in communities with poor sanitation and low socioeconomic status. Meanwhile intrahospital or nosocomial myiasis represents a rare phenomenon but is of relevance to public health. Here, we report an outbreak of myiasis caused by Cochliomyia macellaria in five patients hospitalized for several diseases at the Service of Internal Medicine of the Hospital Regional Universitario de Colima, Mexico during June and July 2021. Three patients were males and two were females, aged 37 to 83 years. All were affected b

Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) as Agent of Myiasis in a Goose in Italy and a Review of Myiasis by This Species in Birds.

Myiasis is a type of parasitosis by larvae of Diptera that may affect vertebrates, including wild and domestic birds. Traumatic myiasis was discovered in a domestic goose, Anser anser domesticus L. (Anseriformes: Anatidae), in June 2020 in a rural area of the region Calabria (Southern Italy). The myiasis was caused by Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae). In Italy, this was the first case of myiasis by L. sericata ever described in a bird. It was also the first case of myiasis detected in a goose in Italy. The description of the case is integrated by a discussion on nonhematophag

Effect of Temperature and Tissue Type on the Development of Myiasis Causing Fly; Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Chrysomya bezziana Villeneuve is the major human myiasis producer in tropical countries, including Sri Lanka. Although of great medical and veterinary importance, only a single study has been published on the development of C. bezziana. This limitation is due in part to the difficulty of maintaining this species in a colony outside of using a living host. In this study, a novel technique that overcomes this limitation is presented along with development data for C. bezziana fed on three different meat types: swine muscle, swine liver, and bovine muscle at two temperature regimes: 35 and 37°C.

Acetylcholinesterase cDNA sequencing and identification of mutations associated with organophosphate resistance in Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Altered acetylcholinesterase (AChE) has been identified in numerous arthropod species resistant to organophosphate (OP) and carbamate insecticides. The New World screwworm (NWS) Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), one of the most important myiasis-causing flies in the Neotropics, has been controlled mainly by the application of OP insecticides in its current geographical distribution. However, few studies have investigated insecticide resistance in this species. Based on previous studies about mutations conferring OP resistance in related dipteran species, AChE cDNA was sequenced allowing a su

Biological behavior of Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann, 1819) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) after refrigeration: Logistics for use in Biotherapy.

The influence of refrigeration on the post-embryonic development of Chrysomya putoria larvae was evaluated, regarding its resistance in the logistics of storage and distribution in biotherapy. Previously sterilized larvae were submitted to four periods of storage under refrigeration (T1=12 h, T2=24 h, T3=48 h and T4=72 h) and control (without sterilization and refrigeration). Newly hatched larvae (0.200 g) were stored between 3 and 9ºC. After refrigeration, 40 neo-larvae (in triplicate) were transferred to 50 g of protein diet and incubated in an acclimatized chamber. There was a significant d

Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae) infestation: case report of three dogs in Malaysia treated with spinosad/milbemycin.

BACKGROUND: Infestation of wounds with the larvae of Callophorid flies is relatively common in countries where these parasites are found. The most common species associated with infections in Southeast Asia is Chrysomya bezziana (Ch. bezziana), the Old World screw worm. Treatment consists of either subcutaneous injection of ivermectin or oral administration of nitenpyram combined with aggressive tissue debridement under general anaesthesia. OBJECTIVES: To describe the treatment of cutaneous myiasis in three dogs caused by the larvae of Ch. bezziana in Malaysia and their treatment with spinosa

Glutamate-gated chloride channel subunit cDNA sequencing of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae): cDNA variants and polymorphisms.

The New World screwworm (NWS) Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) is one of the major myiasis-causing flies that injures livestock and leads to losses of ~US$ 2.7 billions/year in the Neotropics. Ivermectin (IVM), a macrocyclic lactone (ML), is the most used preventive insecticide for this parasite and targets the glutamate-gated chloride (GLUCLα) channels. Several authors have associated altered GluClα homologues to MLs resistance in invertebrates, although studies about resistance in NWS are limited to other genes. Here, we aimed to characterise the NWS GluClα (ChGluClα) cDNA and to search fo

Human wound colonization by Lucilia eximia and Chrysomya rufifacies (Diptera: Calliphoridae): myiasis, perimortem, or postmortem colonization?

The infestation of human or animal tissues by fly larvae has been given distinctive terminology depending on the timing and location of colonization. Wounds and orifices colonized by Diptera in a living human or animal are typically referred to as myiasis. When the colonization occurs after death, it is referred to as postmortem colonization and can be used to estimate the minimum postmortem interval. What happens when the human, as in the case presented here, has a necrotic limb while the human remains alive, at least for a short period of time? The case presented here documents perimortem wo
