A five-month-old alpaca cria presented with a history of abdominal pain, dysuria, and a recurring rectal prolapse. An ultrasonographic examination indicated a urachal abscess attached to the urinary bladder. The abscess was removed surgically, and the patient had an adequate recovery after the procedure and ancillary treatment. This case report highlights secondary complications that could arise following an infection of the urachus in new-world camelids. Key clinical message: Urachal abscess should be considered as a differential diagnosis in juvenile new-world camelids with rectal prolapse,

Domestic camelids comprise Dromedary, Bactrian (old-world camelids, OWC), alpaca, and Lama (new-world camelids, NWC). They possess unique reproductive physiology distinct from other livestock. A key feature is being induced ovulators, triggered by beta nerve growth factor (βNGF) present in the seminal plasma. Proper ovarian function is crucial for reproductive management and biotechnologies. In the absence of ovulation, camelids display overlapping follicular waves, with puberty and sexual receptivity influenced by factors like weight and age. Follicular growth patterns vary among these specie

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis, caused by Taenia sp., represents one of the most important parasitic infections of the central nervous system (CNS) globally, with low but increasing numbers of documented cases in both animals and humans in Europe. Taenia sp, has been documented as etiological agent of disease in several domestic and wildlife animals worldwide as well as in humans. However, it has not yet been reported in New World Camelids (NWC). CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old, female alpaca was presented due to progressive neurological signs including ataxia and progressive weakness of the h

Sarcoptic mange has been described in domestic South American camelids (SACs), exported to non-Andean countries, and in wild SAC in their natural habitat. Reports on the incidence of this infestation in llamas or alpacas raised in their original location, on the other hand, are missing. The present study aimed to detect and characterize cases of sarcoptic mange in herds of llamas (Lama glama) raised in the high plateau region (Puna) of the province of Jujuy, Argentina. Mange-compatible lesions were found in 2 out of 45 examined llama herds, in which 7 and one affected animals were detected. Si

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is commonly analyzed in South American camelids with suspected neurologic disease because of ease of collection and characteristic findings associated with certain diseases.
OBJECTIVES: To assess CSF findings associated with short-term survival or non-survival in South American camelids in which neurologic disease was a differential diagnosis based on history and physical examination.
ANIMALS: Twenty-one llamas and 33 alpacas that underwent CSF analysis at the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center.
METHODS: Retrospective study. Medical records

Copulatory behavior and genital morphology interact to deliver sperm more effectively during mating, but the nature of this interaction has not been explored in depth in most vertebrates. Alpacas have unusually long copulations lasting 15-20 min, and a unique copulatory behavior, where the penis intromits all the way past the cervix, into the uterine horns. Here we describe the morphology of male and female genitalia and report unique morphological characteristics that may be associated with this unusual insemination mode. Vaginal shape is highly variable, and seemingly not associated with age

BACKGROUND: Epididymal sperm can be collected post-castration or post-mortem. This method has already been described for alpaca (Vicugna pacos), but little data are available on success rate and the influence of diluent on it.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the effectiveness of epididymis incision as an extraction method.
METHOD: Post-castration epididymides (n = 78) were incised and semen was collected from cut surfaces. Further sperm were flushed with two semen extenders. For the left epididymis, a diluent without animal proteins and for the right, a diluent with egg yolk was utilis

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2.5-month-old 17.5-kg female alpaca cria was presented for evaluation and treatment of severe bilateral carpal varus deformities.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: No lameness was evident at a walk, and neither carpal varus deformity could be corrected by means of manipulation. Radiography revealed severe varus of the left (27°) and right (21°) carpal regions. No additional conformational abnormalities were detected.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: A single 2.7-mm transphyseal cortical screw was placed in the distolateral aspect of the radius in each limb. On reexamination 8 weeks after screw pl

Albendazole is a benzimidazole derivative with anthelmintic activity. It is the treatment of choice for fasciolosis. The use of albendazole in South American camelids is common, however, there are no studies about the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of albendazole in alpacas and llamas. In the present study, a case of fiber loss (alopecia) in alpacas is described because of the suspected use of a high dose of albendazole. In a fasciolosis control program of an alpaca ranch located in the district of Nuñoa in Puno, Peru, 2184 alpacas were oral treated with albendazole (35-40 mg/kg). After

The synthesis of anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) by the Sertoli cells in males is crucial for sexual differentiation. There are no studies on AMH in Camelids. The objectives of this research were to 1) compare AMH serum concentrations in prepubertal and adult male alpacas and 2) determine the effect of castration on these concentrations in adult males to provide a validation of a commercial AMH test in alpacas. Serum samples were obtained from 15 prepubertal animals (5 for each age groups of 6, 7 and 8 months) and from 5 adult males (age 5-9 years), pre- and 24 h post-castration. AMH was determin

BACKGROUND: Parasitic nematodes can cause substantial clinical and subclinical problems in alpacas and anthelmintics are regularly used to control parasitic nematodes in alpacas. Although anthelmintic resistance has been reported in ruminants worldwide, very little is known about anthelmintic resistance in alpacas. The present study was carried out to confirm a suspected case of anthelmintic resistance in Haemonchus contortus in alpacas in Australia.
METHODS: Post mortem examination of an alpaca was conducted to determine the cause of its death. To confirm a suspected case of macrocyclic lact

The present study intended to develop the hypoosmotic swelling (HOS) test in alpaca for its use in epididymal spermatozoa, to evaluate the membrane functional integrity and determine an appropriate hypoosmotic solution and whether the incubation time of 15 or 60 min is sufficient for the execution of the test. Hypoosmotic solutions (HS) with the following concentrations were used: 50, 100, 150, 200 and 275 mOsm/kg of sodium citrate tribasic dihydrate and d-fructose. Ten microlitres of epididymal sperm sample was mixed in 150 μL of the respective HS and incubated for 15 or 60 min at 38°C. From

Cryopreservation is known to destabilise spermatozoa and is associated with deficiencies in protamine levels and increased DNA fragmentation, which can reduce fertility in various species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of cryopreservation on protamine levels and DNA fragmentation in alpaca spermatozoa. A total of 108 testicles/epididymides were collected from a slaughterhouse and sperm were recovered from the cauda epididymis. Only samples meeting the criteria of > 10 g in weight, > 3 cm in length, > 30% motility, and > 50 million spermatozoa/mL were processed. Sixty s

Poisoning is often suspected to be the origin of disease in South American camelids (SACs) by owners, but only in a few cases this assumption can be confirmed. In small ruminants, rhododendron poisoning is a common emergency for livestock veterinarians. However, this condition has rarely been reported in SACs so far. This paper provides information regarding clinical findings, hematology, clinical chemistry, and treatment of four alpacas after presumed intake of rhododendron leaves including pathological findings of one of the animals. Rhododendron leaves contain grayanatoxins that lead to hyp
