Inhibitory effects of Syzygium aromaticum and Camellia sinensis methanolic extracts on the growth of Babesia and Theileria parasites.

Currently, chemotherapeutics against piroplasmosis are also associated with toxicity and the emergence of drug-resistant parasites. Therefore, the discovery of new drug compounds is necessary for the effective control of bovine and equine piroplasms. Syzygium aromaticum (clove) and Camellia sinensis (green tea) have several documented medicinal properties. In the present study, the growth-inhibiting effects of S. aromaticum and C. sinensis methanolic extracts were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values for methanolic S. aromaticum against Babesi

Significantly increased amino acid accumulation in a novel albino branch of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis).

A normal tea plant with one albino branch was discovered. RNA sequencing, albinism phenotype and ultrastructural observations provided a valuable understanding of the albino mechanism in tea plants. Tea plants with a specific color (white or yellow) have been studied extensively. A normal tea plant (Camellia sinensis cv. quntizhong) with one albino branch was discovered in a local tea plantation in Huangshan, Anhui, China. The pure albino leaves on this special branch had accumulated a fairly high content of amino acids, especially theanine (45.31 mg/g DW), and had a low concentration of polyp

The inhibitory effect of Camellia sinensis extracts against the neuromuscular blockade of Crotalus durissus terrificus venom.

In geographically isolated populations where intensive medical care or serum therapy is not easily accessible snake envenomation is a major cause for concern. The aim of the present study was to test Camellia sinensis extracts, theaflavin and epigallocatechin (two of the main C. sinensis components) against the irreversible neuromuscular blockade induced by Crotalus durissus terrificus venom in mouse phrenic-nerve diaphragm preparations. A quantitative histological study was also performed. The venom (20µg/ml) completely decreased twitch tension after 70min and 5µg/ml venom abolished 50% of tw

BFMambaNet: Boundary-Frequency-Guided Global Semantic Mamba Network for Fine-Grained Camellia oleifera Leaf Disease Segmentation.

Camellia oleifera leaf disease segmentation under natural field conditions is important for precision plant protection but remains challenging because lesions often show small target areas, blurred boundaries, uneven illumination, complex backgrounds, and coexisting symptoms. To address these problems, this paper proposes BFMambaNet, a Boundary-Frequency-guided Global Semantic Mamba Network for fine-grained disease segmentation. The model adopts an encoder-decoder framework and introduces a Global Semantic Mamba-based spatial selective feature modeling block to capture long-range lesion contex

Green synthesis of Fe3O4 nanoplatforms via Camellia sinensis: Linking surface chemistry, membrane interactions, and biological performance.

The rational design of magnetic nanoplatforms requires a thorough understanding of their structure, surface chemistry, and behavior at biological interfaces. Herein, iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized in situ with Camellia sinensis extract (Fe3O4-CS) were synthesized via a green one-pot route and comprehensively characterized. XRD revealed a cubic inverse spinel iron oxide structure, with an average crystallite size smaller than 13 nm. FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and TGA demonstrated successful phytochemical capping, while DLS and zeta potential measurements (-24 mV) revealed changes in the

Camellia Tea Saponin Ameliorates 5-Fluorouracil-Induced Damage of HaCaT Cells by Regulating Ferroptosis and Inflammation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of programmed cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation products (LPOs). A chemotherapeutic drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), can induce epithelial mucositis and favor drug synergism with erastin in ferroptosis. Camellia tea saponin extract (TS) is known to exert antioxidative properties. This study aims to delineate the protective role of TS in mitigating 5-FU-induced ferroptosis and inflammation in human keratinocytes. METHODS: HaCaT cells were induced by 5-FU and erastin, treated with different TS doses, and their viability was th

Camellia sinensis solvent extract, epigallocatechin gallate and caffeine confer trophocidal and cysticidal effects against Acanthamoeba castellanii.

We examined the anti-acanthamoebic efficacy of green tea Camellia sinensis solvent extract (SE) or its chemical constituents against Acanthamoeba castellanii by using anti-trophozoite, anti-encystation, and anti-excystation assays. C. sinensis SE (625-5000 µg/mL) inhibited trophozoite replication within 24-72 h. C. sinensis SE exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of encystation, with a marked cysticidal activity at 2500-5000 µg/mL. Two constituents of C. sinensis, namely epigallocatechin-3-gallate and caffeine, at 100 μM and 200 μM respectively, significantly inhibited both trophozoite replic

[Comparative analysis of gene expression in tea plant (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) under low-temperature stress].

Low-temperature stress is one of the main factors limiting the distribution and reducing the yield of many subtropical crops, including the tea crop. Efficient breeding to develop frost-tolerant cultivars requires a reliable set of genetic markers for identifying resistance donors, and that is why it is necessary to reveal the specific genetic response in frost-tolerant genotypes in comparison with frost- susceptible ones. In this work, we performed a comparative analysis of the expression of 18 tea genes (ICE1, CBF1, DHN1, DHN2, DHN3, NAC17, NAC26, NAC30, bHLH7, bHLH43, P5CS, WRKY2, LOX1, LOX

Photodynamic inactivation with natural photosensitizers: Impact on camellia seeds and improvement of its oil yield and quality.

Green pretreatments that improve oil recovery while maintaining oil quality are of interest for camellia seed processing. This study compared three separate photodynamic inactivation (PDI) pretreatments, using emodin, resveratrol, or coumarin as the photosensitizer under LED blue light, and evaluated their effects on camellia seeds and the oil obtained after pressing. PDI significantly reduced surface microbial loads, with bacterial and fungal counts decreasing by 0.99-1.31 and 1.04-1.87 log CFU/g, respectively (p < 0.05). It also altered seed microstructure and moisture distribution, increase

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal the mechanism of shoot growth in grafted Camellia oleifera seedlings.

Shoot flushing is a critical determinant of grafted seedling quality in Camellia oleifera, with key evaluation metrics including flushing timing, new shoot number and growth rate, and seedling height uniformity. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms governing shoot development, we conducted integrated analyses of endogenous hormones, metabolomics, and transcriptomics across three Camellia species (C. oleifera, C. meiocarpa, and C. weiningensis). Hormonal profiling revealed that shoot-flushing plants exhibited elevated levels of GA24, GA9, salicylic acid, IAA, IAAla, IPA, and abscisic acid comp

Silicon Is Linked to Tea Quality Through Alteration Aluminum Uptake and Translocation in Camellia sinensis L.

Aluminum (Al) is involved in almost all aspects of abiotic stress and is supposed to play a crucial role in tea quality. Both exogenous Al and silicon (Si) influence Al uptake, translocation, and accumulation in considerable quantify plants. However, the relationship between Si-mediated Al uptake and tea quality has not been systematically investigated. In this study, we found that Si supply affected caffeine, free amino acids, and Al in young leaves and tea infusion. Si increased the Al content in secondary roots, but it also decreased the ratio of young leaves to secondary roots, with this d
