Microbial drug resistance represents one of the major causes of death today. Traditional medicine provides an important health care service and can be applied as alternative therapy. The growing interest in essential oils (EOs) has led to extensive research, due to their diverse applications in pharmaceuticals, food products and cosmetics. The current study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of menthol, lemon, clove and camphor EOs against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans an

The main known benefit of calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament lies in the bactericidal effect conferred by its pH. The objective of this work was to determine the influence of the vehicle on the pH of calcium hydroxide pastes after usage in patients and in vitro. The incisor root canals of 180 patients were instrumented and filled with calcium hydroxide pastes containing distilled water, chlorhexidine, propylene glycol, anesthetic solution, camphorated p-monochlorophenol and camphorated p-monochlorophenol-propylene glycol. The pH of the paste in the patients' root canals was measured

OBJECTIVE: Internal use of 'camphor' is a potential public health concern in Accra. We sought to identify the toxins being sold as mothballs in Greater Accra and use this information to help educate both clinicians and the public.
METHODS: Mothballs are commonly sold by street and marketplace vendors in unmarked cling film-wrapped packs. Fifteen small packs of mothballs were purchased from random vendors in three major markets and six roadside stands in Greater Accra. All samples were subjected to the float test; one sample was confirmed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy.
RESULTS: All

Carvone is a monoterpene compound that has been widely used as a pesticide for more than 10 years. However, little is known regarding the fate of carvone, or its degradation products, in the environment. We used GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) to study the fate of carvone and its degradation and photolysis products under different soil and light conditions. We identified and quantified three degradation products of carvone in soil and water samples: dihydrocarvone, dihydrocarveol, and carvone camphor. In soil, dihydrocarveol was produced at very low levels (≤0.067 mg/kg), while di

Electrophysiological investigations of the selective sensitivity of receptor cells have shown that odorants could be distributed into groups according to the profiles of responses that they elicited from a population of receptor cells. As the concept of odorant group plays an important role in the understanding of olfactory coding, an attempt was made to investigate in detail the group properties of a number of structurally and qualitatively related molecules: 1,8 cineole, DL-camphor, borneol, iso-borneol, adamantane, fenchone, fenchyl alcohol, 3,3,5-tri-methyl cyclohexanone, camphene, 1,1,2,2

The mugwortArtemisia vulgaris L. (Compositae: Anthemideae) contains insect repellents which can be released from the plant tissues by combustion. Work was carried out to isolate and identify the repellent compounds. The dried, pulverized whole plants were steam-distilled to give a repellent essential oil which was fractionated by column chromatography. Active fractions were analyzed by capillary GC and by combined GC-MS. A number of compounds, mainly monoterpenoids, were identified. When tested as repellents against the yellow fever mosquitoAedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae), (±)-linalool,

Prolonged use of chemical anthelmintics has been found to result in anthelmintic resistance and environmental issues, thereby limiting the application of these drugs in domestic animals and prompting interest in the study of plant extracts as alternative sources thereof. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of the essential oil (EO) of Artemisia lancea against the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus using egg hatch assay, larval development assay, and larval migration inhibition assay. The EO yield of extraction was 0.63% (w/w), and the major constituents were 1,8-cine

BACKGROUND: Balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) is a promising interventional treatment for inoperable chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Evidence in favor of BPA is growing, but long-term data remain scarce. The Cambridge Pulmonary Hypertension Outcome Review (CAMPHOR) is validated for the assessment of patients with pulmonary hypertension within three domains: symptoms, activity, and quality of life (QoL). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term effects of BPA on these domains in patients with inoperable CTEPH.
METHODS: Between March 2014 and August 20

Ammonia (NH3) emissions from traffic have received particular attention in recent years because of their important contributions to the growth of secondary aerosols and the negative effects on urban air quality. However, few studies have been performed on the impacts of traffic NH3 emissions on adjacent soil and plants. Moreover, doubt remains over whether dry nitrogen (N) deposition still contributes a minor proportion of plant N nutrition compared with wet N deposition in urban road environments. This study investigated the δ15N values of road dustfall, soil, moss, camphor leaf and camphor b

Resonance Raman spectroscopy is applied to the cyanide adducts of cytochrome P450cam and its T252A and D251N site-directed mutants, both in their substrate-free and camphor-bound forms, to probe active-site heme structure and, in particular, interactions of the FeCN fragment with potential active-site H-bond donors. In contrast to the ferrous CO and ferric NO adducts, which form only essentially linear (slightly distorted) FeXY fragments, the spectra of the ferric CN(-) adducts provide clear evidence the for the existence of an additional, rather highly bent, conformer; that is, the cyanide co

We investigate the spontaneous motion of an elliptical Janus particle, driven by Marangoni forces, on a water surface to understand how particle shape and size influence its dynamics. The Janus particle is one-half infused with a substance such as camphor, which lowers the surface tension upon release onto the water surface. The resulting surface tension gradient generates Marangoni forces that propel the particle. For fully camphor-infused (non-Janus) particles, previous studies have shown that motion occurs along the short axis of the ellipse. However, for Janus particles, our experiments re
