BACKGROUND: Campylobacter jejuni enteritis is the most common antecedent infection in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). C. jejuni-related GBS is usually acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN), but previous reports described many cases of the demyelinating subtype of GBS (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy [AIDP]) after C. jejuni infection.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether C. jejuni infection elicits AIDP.
METHODS: In 159 consecutive patients with GBS, antibodies against C. jejuni were measured using ELISA. Antecedent C. jejuni infection was determined by the strict criteria of posit

OBJECTIVE: To study the occurrence and the clinical picture of musculoskeletal (MSK) complications including reactive arthritis (ReA) following an outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni.
METHODS: An outbreak of C. jejuni infection occurred in 2000 in Asikkala, Finland, during which 350 exposed subjects contacted the Municipal Health Centre (MHC). All primary care physicians in the MHC were advised to refer patients with acute MSK complications to the Rheumatism Foundation Hospital (RFH) for a specialist clinical examination, which was performed <or= 3 months after the onset of the outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Myocarditis can develop as a complication of various infections and is most commonly linked to enterovirus infections. Myocarditis is rarely associated with bacterial infections; salmonellosis and shigellosis have been the most frequently reported bacterial cause. We report a case of myocarditis related to Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old previously healthy man presented with a history of prolonged chest pain radiating to the jaw and the left arm. Five days prior to the onset of chest pain, he developed bloody diarrhea, fever and chills. Creatine ki

Gatrointestinal symptoms, which include diarrhea, are as common as respiratory symptoms in patients with HIV infection. Gastrointestinal symptoms may result from infections, neoplasma, HIV enteropathy or drug toxicity. Three HIV-infected patients admitted to our hospital complaining of diarrhea and fever. We confirmed their diagnosis as Campylobacter jejuni enteritis by bacteriological examination of their feces. All of them had eaten inadequately cooked meat in restaurants before the onset of their enteritis. Their symptoms immediately improved after the administration of antimicrobial agents

We describe a patient with acute multifocal motor neuropathy with conduction block (MMNCB) and high titers of immunoglobulin G anti-GM1 antibodies after Campylobacter jejuni enteritis. Treatment with intravenous immune globulin led to rapid improvement with return of normal function by 6 weeks. This is the first report of C. jejuni enteritis preceding MMNCB.

Patients with Campylobacter enterocolitis may come to laparotomy due to the severity of abdominal symptoms and signs, although only two patients with intestinal inflammation have been described and in neither was the histopathology documented. A case of a 52-year-old male who had a typical diarrhoeal illness of Campylobacter enterocolitis diagnosed on stool culture is reported. Despite appropriate treatment he developed signs and symptoms consistent with small intestinal obstruction. Laparotomy revealed peritonitis and thickened distal ileum with transmural inflammatory changes on histopatholo

We report a case of acute postinfectious encephalopathy in a child following Campylobacter jejuni enteritis. Serial MR scans showed lesions involving predominantly gray matter and the adjacent subcortical white matter--findings different from those in other immune-mediated disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, in which either white or gray matter may be involved, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, in which white matter abnormalities predominate with involvement of the subcortical white matter.

Twenty-three antimicrobial agents, including 4 new broadspectrum beta-lactam antibiotics were tested against 50 clinical isolates of Campylobacter jejuni. The activity of metabolites of metronidazole and tinidazole was also tested. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined by agar dilution. beta-lactamase production was detected by a chromogenic cephalosporin method. All strains were susceptible to erythromycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol, furazolidone, aminoglycosides (including gentamicin), cefotaxime and NF-thienamycin. All isolates were resistant to penicillin, cephalothin,

Since the sources from which humans acquire Campylobacter enteritis are only partially known, we studied the frequency of carriage of Campylobacter fetus subsp. jejuni in migratory waterfowl. Cecal contents of various species of wild ducks were cultured on selective media that contained antibiotics to inhibit normal flora. Thirty-five percent of the 445 ducks cultured harbored C. fetus subsp. jejuni. Migratory waterfowl are yet another reservoir for this enteric pathogen and may be of public health importance for humans in the contamination of water or when used as food.

Background: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter spp. in asymptomatic school-going children and establish the antibiotic resistance patterns of the isolates towards the drugs used to treat campylobacteriosis, including macrolides, quinolones and tetracycline. Campylobacter spp. are a leading cause of enteric illness and have only recently shown resistance to antibiotics. Methods: This study isolated Campylobacter spp., including Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter lari, in stool samples from asymptomatic school-going c

The application of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) fingerprinting assays enables discrimination between species and strains of microorganisms. PCR primers aiming at arbitrary sequences in combination with primers directed against the repetitive extragenic palindrome (REP) or enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) motifs generate isolate-specific DNA banding patterns. Analysis of these PCR fingerprints obtained for 33 isolates of Campylobacter jejuni, 30 isolates of Campylobacter coli, and 8 isolates of Campylobacter lari revealed that besides generation of isolate-specific frag

Campylobacter spp. are important causes of bacterial zoonosis, most often transmitted by contaminated poultry meat. From an epidemiological and risk assessment perspective, further knowledge should be obtained on Campylobacter prevalence and genotype distribution in primary production. Consequently, 15 Austrian broiler flocks were surveyed in summer for their thermophilic Campylobacter spp. contamination status. Chicken droppings, dust and drinking water samples were collected from each flock at three separate sampling periods. Isolates were confirmed by PCR and subtyped. We also compared thre

Campylobacter (C.) jejuni and C. coli are common zoonotic bacteria in pigs, which typically act as asymptomatic carriers. However, the effects of Campylobacter colonisation on the porcine intestinal microbiota and metabolome remain poorly understood. This study investigated microbiome and metabolome alterations associated with co-colonisation by C. jejuni and C. coli in the different intestinal segments of pigs. Thirty-two weaned piglets were assigned to a control group and a group inoculated with C. coli ST5777/CT828 and C. jejuni ST122/CT206. Four weeks post inoculation, jejunal and caecal c

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter jejuni is the leading cause of human bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. However, systemic infection with C. jejuni is uncommon, and osteomyelitis caused by C. jejuni is extremely rare. Cultivation from spinal bone biopsies has not previously been reported in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 79-year-old immunocompetent male was admitted to the emergency department at Aalborg University Hospital in Denmark with lower back pain, fever and diarrhoea. A FecalSwab obtained upon admission was PCR-positive for Campylobacter spp, while an aerobic blood culture bottle wa

A 66-year-old woman presented with 2 days of fever and severe diarrhoea. She has a history of ulcerative colitis (UC), well controlled with medication. She also has a history of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, infective endocarditis following aortic valve replacement and pulmonary embolism. She had complained of passing stool with traces of blood about 30 times per day. Stool testing for Clostridium difficile, routine culture and microscopy was done. She was started on ceftriaxone. CT scan revealed thick-walled colon consistent with UC flare. Flexible sigmoidoscopy showed active continuous colitis ext

The Campylobacter jejuni capsular polysaccharide is important for virulence and often contains a modified heptose. In strain ATCC 700819 (a.k.a. NCTC 11168), the modified heptose branches off from the capsular backbone and is directly exposed to the environment. We reported previously that the enzymes encoded by wcaG, mlghB and mlghC are involved in heptose modification. Here, we show that inactivation of any of these genes leads to production of capsule lacking modified heptose and alters the transcription of other capsule modification genes differentially. Inactivation of mlghB or mlghC, but

Both Helicobacter pylori and Campylobacter jejuni are highly prevalent Gram-negative microaerophilic bacteria which are gastrointestinal pathogens of humans; H. pylori colonizes the gastroduodenal compartment and C. jejuni the intestinal mucosa. Although H. pylori causes chronic gastric infection leading to gastritis, peptic ulcers and eventually gastric cancer while C. jejuni causes acute infection inducing diarrhoeal disease, the endotoxin molecules of both bacterial species contrastingly contribute to their pathogenesis and the autoimmune sequelae each induces. Compared with enterobacterial
