PURPOSE: To compare two distinct surgical techniques in the management of chronic Primary Lacrimal Canaliculitis (PLC) with clinically detectable concretions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inclusion criteria: Patients presenting with symptoms consistent with the diagnosis of primary lacrimal canaliculitis (PLC) with ocular involvement were gathered. Gomori-Grocott Methenamine Silver test was used for concretion staining. Two groups were identified based on the surgical technique. Group A consisted of patients who underwent a punctum sparing canalicular curettage using a chalazion curette, while the

Lacrimal fistulae are rare and not well known by radiologists. Four cases are illustrated, two congenital (a skin-canaliculous and a canaliculous-palpebral fistula) and two acquired (a rare case of sac-orbital fistula and a canaliculous-palpebral fistula arisen during dacryography). Fistulae are to be distinguished from pedunculated lacrimal diverticulous of which an interesting and rare case is presented. After a careful examination of the pathogenesis and symptomatology of lacrimal fistulae the authors agree that only macrodacryography carried out by means of sophisticated techniques (seriog

BACKGROUND: Dacryolithiasis can occur anywhere in the lacrimal drainage system and is frequently associated with microbial infections. The presence of dacryolithiasis is difficult to determine based on its clinical manifestations, which complicates clinical treatment.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the clinical diagnosis, treatment and characteristics of dacryolithiasis, as well as surgical methods used to treat it and treatment effects over the past 5 years.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 338 patients who were diagnosed with dacryolithiasis at o

Canaliculitis is a rare disease of the lacrimal pathway, especially of the canaliculi. It is often not identified, therefore misdiagnosed and inadequately treated. It accounts 2 % of all lacrimal diseases. False diagnoses are usually conjunctivitis, blepharitis, dacryocystitis, hordeolum and chalazion. Besides viruses and fungi a variety of bacteria can cause a canaliculitis. Actinomyces is the most common pathogenic agent of canaliculitis. Its generic name was first described by Harz in 1877. In 1854 von Graefe as well as Kipp and others in 1883 identified actinomyces as the agent for intraca

Analysis of the clinical details associated with 26 referred isolates of Propionibacterium propionicum revealed the marked propensity of this anaerobe to be involved with infections of the lacrimal apparatus; 18 (69%) of the 26 referred isolates were from cases of canaliculitis in which this organism was regarded as the significant pathogen. Further analysis of data showed a significant correlation with the sex of the patient. Of the 18 cases of canaliculitis, the sex of the patient was reported in 16; 14 (88%) of these 16 patients were females (P < .005). The age of 13 of the 18 patients with

Actinomycotic conjunctivitis is usually unilateral and secondary to canaliculitis. We report an unusual case of bilateral actinomycotic blepharokeratoconjunctivitis in the absence of canaliculitis. Keratitis occurred without any preceding ocular trauma. Both eyes had remissions and relapses in response to the antibiotic-steroid drops. Diagnosis of A. israelii infection was made on the basis of Gram staining, culture and biochemical characteristics. Complete excision of the conjunctival ulcer along with penicillin therapy resulted in cure. This case highlights that microorganisms of the order A

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, ultrasound examination of the lacrimal drainage system is not able to represent the lacrimal canaliculi with a high quality but the high-resolution ultrasound with 20 MHz transducer is a better possibility to get images of the lacrimal canaliculi.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 20 patients suffering from diseases of the lacrimal drainage system were examined ultrasonographically. Detection and localisation of the lacrimal canaliculi was made by a 20 MHz sector scanner in combination with the ultrasound diagnostic system I. After patient positioning, the hig

Background. Lacrimal infections by Actinomyces are rare and commonly misdiagnosed for long periods of time. They account for 2% of all lacrimal diseases. Case Report. We report a case of a 70-year-old female patient suffering from a para-canalicular abscess in the medial canthus of the left eye, beside the lower punctum lacrimale, resembling a chalazion. Purulence exited from the punctum lacrimale due to inflammation of the inferior canaliculus (canaliculitis). When pressure was applied to the mass, a second exit of purulence was also observed under the palpebral conjunctiva below the lacrimal

Although relatively uncommon, fungi, atypical Mycobacteria, and Nocardia have been isolated from a variety of infections of eye including keratitis, scleritis, canaliculitis, dacryocystitis, endophthalmitis and orbital cellulites. The organisms typically cause a slowly progressive disease. The diseases caused by the organisms can pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. In this manuscript we will describe updates on important aspects of the ocular infections caused by these organisms.
