Atoxoplasmosis in canary fledglings: severe lymphocytic enteritis with preferential parasitism of B lymphocytes.

All fledgling canaries (Serinum canarius) in a small private aviary died from atoxoplasmosis during a single breeding season. The birds were clinically normal when removed from their parents at 2 mo of age, but by 3 mo of age all had died following an illness characterized by progressive lethargy, anorexia, and debilitation. Cachexia, splenomegaly, and pale foci in the liver were evident at necropsy. Microscopically, there was striking infiltration of the intestinal lamina propria by mononuclear cells that contained intracytoplasmic protozoa. Protozoa were also observed in mononuclear cells in

Selectivity of canary HVC neurons for the bird's own song: modulation by photoperiodic conditions.

To what extent seasonal factors modify the neuronal functional properties within the nuclei of the avian song system remains an open question. In adult songbirds, neurons of the song premotor nucleus HVC (used as a proper name) exhibit selective responses for the bird's own song (BOS). Here we examine whether, outside the breeding season, when songs are less stereotyped, HVC neurons of male canaries still respond selectively to the BOS produced during this period. In an initial experiment, single-unit recordings (n = 114) revealed that the neuronal selectivity for the current BOS was attenuate

Outbreak of Shigella sonnei in a rural hotel in La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain.

Shigella sonnei is a significant cause of gastroenteritis in both developing and industrialized countries. Knowledge of the diversity and antimicrobial susceptibility of the bacterium may be helpful in the management of both individual cases and outbreaks. This study was undertaken to evaluate the molecular epidemiology of an outbreak of diarrhea due to S. sonnei. The outbreak involved 14 of 28 (50%) tourists in a small rural hotel in La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain. All of the S. sonnei isolates recovered had the same antimicrobial susceptibility and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns

Digestive pathology of sea turtles stranded in the Canary Islands between 1993 and 2001.

Digestive lesions were observed in 84 of 136 sea turtles (128 Caretta caretta, four Chelonia mydas and four Dermochelys coriacea) stranded in the Canary Islands between January 1993 and December 2001. In the oral cavity ulcerative and necropurulent stomatitis were the most frequently observed lesions, and in the oesophagus ulcerative and fibrinous oesophagitis, and traumatic oesophageal perforation were most frequently observed; all these lesions were mainly associated with the ingestion of fishing hooks. Different histological types of gastritis were observed in 35 of the turtles; necropurule

Assessment of the DQ heterodimer test in the diagnosis of celiac disease in the Canary Islands (Spain).

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease is a multifactorial disorder of the proximal small intestine associated with a permanent intolerance to gluten. The HLA-DQ(alpha1*0501, beta1*02) heterodimer is strongly associated with this disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors studied a sample of 354 unrelated Caucasoid individuals: 118 patients with celiac disease and 236 control subjects. All patients and controls subjects were born in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) at least two generations ago. The authors typed the HLA-DQA1 and DQB1 genes by DNA methods. The positive and negative predictive values of the

Antidepressant effects of the methanol extract of several Hypericum species from the Canary Islands.

The aim of the present study was to investigate several neuropharmacological effects of the methanol extract of the aerial parts in blossom of Hypericum canariense, H. glandulosum, H. grandifolium and H. reflexum (Hypericaceae). These extracts did not alter significantly the locomotor activity, body temperature or the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, with the exception of H. reflexum which significantly potentiated pentobarbital-induced sleeping time at both doses assayed (500 and 1000 mg/kg p.o.). Additionally, neither muscle relaxant nor anticholinergic activity was observed. These extra

[Prevalence of antibodies against Coxiella burnetii in a healthy population in Lanzarote (Canary Islands)].

The Canary Islands area now appears to be a Q-fever endemic zone, especially the west side (La Palma island). The situation in the eastern islands in unknown. In order to evaluate the seric prevalence of Coxiella burnetii, 100 serum samples that were taken from the adult population of Lanzarote and, following strict criteria, were analysed using a complement fixation test; blood donors and patients who had suffered a recent infection were excluded. The study was carried out during November/1986. Three serum samples were positive, one had titers of 1/8 and the other two showed 1/64. This preval

Monitored Therapy of Sporadic Mycobacteriosis Caused By Mycobacterium Genavense in Atlantic Canaries (Serinus Canaria) and Bengalese Finch (Lonchura Striata).

INTRODUCTION: Mycobacteriosis is a significant disease of companion and wild birds which causes emaciation and widely distributed lesions, as well as being a potential zoonosis. Its primary aetiological agents in birds are Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium and the fastidious Mycobacterium genavense. This study monitored the therapy of birds naturally infected with Mycobacterium genavense to gain understanding of its effectiveness and the interrelation of co-infections with the disease course and pharmacotherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five Atlantic canaries (Serinus canaria) and one Bengalese f

Expanding CIRdb, a comprehensive catalog of whole-exome sequencing data of Canary Islanders.

The Canary Islanders exhibit a unique genetic admixture, comprising European (EUR), North African (NAF), and sub-Saharan African (SSA) ancestries. We comprehensively characterized the full spectrum of small genetic variation in this population based on whole-exome sequencing data to further develop CIRdb. Our results revealed 387,555 variants, of which 15.1% were previously unreported, and we prioritized novel putative pathogenic variants exhibiting enrichment in respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic disorders. Genetic differentiation patterns provided fine-grained insights into within-ar

Predictive Approach to Mapping Angiostrongylus cantonensis Nematode Distribution, Canary Islands, Spain.

The invasive nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) can cause eosinophilic meningitis in humans. Once restricted to Southeast Asia, A. cantonensis nematodes are now widespread across the tropics and have been reported in Europe. Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, and the Mediterranean region are emerging hotspots. We surveyed gastropods, rats, and lizards across Tenerife and detected the parasite in all host groups at 2.4%-41.6% prevalence. Using species distribution models, we identified precipitation seasonality as the main driver of habitat suitability; tree cover and climatic va

Potentially Zoonotic Bacteria in Exotic Freshwater Turtles from the Canary Islands (Spain).

The pond slider (Trachemys scripta) is native to the southeastern United States but has been introduced all around the world, including to the Canary Islands (Spain), along with other less-common exotic freshwater turtles such as Graptemys pseudogeographica, Mauremys spp., and Pseudemys peninsularis. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of pathogenic bacteria in these animals and to evaluate the associated health risks for humans and local fauna. For this purpose, cloacal samples from 42 specimens collected on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) were analyz

Benthic bioturbation: A canary in the mine for the retention and release of metals from estuarine sediments.

After the largest mining tailings spill in Brazil, the Rio Doce estuarine ecosystem was severely impacted by metal contamination. In a 28-day laboratory experiment, we examined the effects of the polychaeta Laeonereis sp. on fluxes of oxygen and metal across the sediment-water interface. The density-dependent effect of Laeonereis sp. in the oxygen and metal fluxes was tested at low and high (74 and 222 ind m-2, respectively) densities, and compared with defaunated controls. The higher worm density had an amplified effect on the oxygen flux, sediment uptake of Al and Mn, and Fe oxidation compar

Presence of CTXs in moray eels and dusky groupers in the marine environment of the Canary Islands.

Local population frequently consumes moray eels and dusky groupers from the Canary Islands. These species are top predators and the interactions between them include predation but also, in some cases, collaborative hunting. These fish are well known to cause ciguatera (CFP) outbreaks in several marine areas such as Japan, Hawaii, French Polynesia and Caribe. Groupers have been involved in CFP events in the Canary Islands, however, moray eels have not yet been well studied in this regard. The present research seeks to describe the finding of a black moray in the stomach of a positive dusky grou
