Gynecologic Care of Black Breast Cancer Survivors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Black patients suffer from breast cancer-related racial health disparities, which could have implications on their gynecologic care. This review explores considerations in the gynecologic care of Black breast cancer survivors. RECENT FINDINGS: Black people have a higher risk of leiomyoma and endometrial cancer, which could confound bleeding patterns such as in the setting of tamoxifen use. As Black people are more likely to have early-onset breast cancer, this may have implications on long-term bone and heart health. Black patients may be more likely to have menopausal symp

Thyroid hypofunction in aging testicular cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Thyroid hypofunction is a late effect observed in several groups of cancer survivors, but has to date not been evaluated in-depth in testicular cancer survivors (TCSs). We investigated the prevalence of thyroid hypofunction in long-term TCSs and compared the findings with those of a comparison group from the general population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Norwegian TCSs diagnosed with unilateral testicular cancer in the period 1980-1994 (N = 1,436) were grouped according to their cancer treatment (Surgery only; Radiotherapy only; Cisplatin-based chemotherapy, eventually combined with radio

Reproductive health of female childhood cancer survivors.

Current treatment schemes of childhood cancer are usually effective enough to enable successful management of the disease. With the high rates of survival, another problem arises because patients often suffer much later from side effects of the toxic therapy. A common complication caused by cancer treatment is impairment of the female reproductive system including dysfunction of the hypothalamus and hypophysis, the killing of gonadal cells, and uterine injury. This may lead to altered pubertal timing, gonadotropin insufficiency or deficiency, acute ovarian failure, premature ovarian insufficie

Hormone replacement therapy in cancer survivors: Utopia?

As growing of old women population, menopausal women will also increase: an accurate estimation of postmenopausal population is an essential information for health care providers considering that with aging, the incidence of all cancers is expected to increase. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has proven to be highly effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, dyspareunia, sexual disorders, and insomnia and in preventing osteoporosis. According to preclinical data, estrogen and progesterone are supposed to be involved in the induction and progression of bre

Hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction amongst nasopharyngeal cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Radiation fields for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) include the base of skull, which places the hypothalamus and pituitary at risk of damage. We aimed to establish the prevalence, pattern and severity of hypothalamic pituitary (HP) dysfunction amongst NPC survivors. METHODS: We studied 50 patients (31 males) with mean age 57 ± 12.2 years who had treatment for NPC between 3 and 21 years (median 8 years) without pre-existing HP disorder from other causes. All patients had a baseline cortisol, fT4, TSH, LH, FSH, oestradiol/testosterone, prolactin and renal function. All patients underwent

[Growth hormone treatment in childhood cancer survivors].

BACKGROUND: Growth hormone (GH) deficiency is one of the most frequent endocrine problems occurring in cancer survivors, particularly when there is a previous history of central nervous system (CNS) tumour and submission to radiotherapy (RT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed pediatric cancer survivors with GH deficiency, submitted to GH treatment from 1988 to 2010 in a tertiary level hospital. We analised the following data: sex, age, oncologic diagnosis, oncologic treatment, auxology, Tanner puberty stage, final height, target height and other associated endocrine problems.

Promoting a healthy lifestyle among cancer survivors.

With improving longevity, the late-occurring adverse effects of cancer and its treatment are becoming increasingly apparent. As in other clinical populations, healthy lifestyle behaviors encompassing weight management, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and smoking cessation have the potential to reduce morbidity and mortality significantly in cancer survivors. This article addresses the strength of evidence for recommendations in areas of weight management, diet, exercise, and smoking cessation; and the current evidence examining the efficacy of various intervention approaches to promote healt

Some musculo-skeletal sequelae in cancer survivors.

This paper deals with some of the musculo-skeletal complication that can occur after cancer treatment. In particular, we focus on Cancer Treatment Induced Bone Loss (CTIBL) and the musculo-skeletal complications that can occur in patients treated for extremity sarcoma. In addition we discuss peripheral neuropathy, musculo-skeletal pain and briefly mention some of the complications related to radiotherapy. CTIBL is mostly studied in breast cancer and prostate cancer survivors. The cause in these groups is mainly due to treatment induced hypogonadism. Other causes of CTIBL are indirect or direct

Pharmacogenomics of cancer therapy-related cardiomyopathy in childhood cancer survivors.

Cancer therapy-related cardiomyopathy (CTR-cardiomyopathy) is the leading noncancer late effect contributing to morbidity and mortality among adult survivors of childhood cancer. Anthracycline chemotherapy and thoracic radiotherapy are the primary treatment-related risk factors. However, substantial variability among similarly treated individuals highlights the role of germline genetic susceptibility. This review summarizes pharmacogenomic evidence for CTR-cardiomyopathy and the integration of genetic and clinical risk factors for individualized risk prediction. We searched PubMed through July

Subsequent primary cancer risks for non-hereditary colorectal cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer survivors have increased risks of subsequent primary cancers (SPCs), but most studies have included individuals with hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes. This study assessed SPC risks for colorectal cancer survivors without a known hereditary predisposition to colorectal cancer. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Colon Cancer Family Registry Cohort, recruiting participants between 1998 and 2012 through population cancer registries in Australia, Canada and the United States, with follow-up every five years (until December 2022). Individuals with pathogenic germ
