Cannabis and acute psychosis.

The Present State Examination was used to assess the psychopathology of 23 psychotic patients who were cannabis positive on urinary screening, and 46 matched drug-free controls. Cases and controls were indistinguishable in terms of psychopathology, DSMIII diagnoses, onset of recent illness, the proportion of first admissions, ethnicity, and socio-economic class, differing only in their histories of substance use. These data suggest that psychosis which develops or recurs in the context of cannabis use does not have a characteristic psychopathology or mode of onset, and is not restricted to a p

Health aspects of cannabis.

Marijuana seems firmly established as another social drug in Western countries, regardless of its current legal status. Patterns of use vary widely. As with other social drugs, the pattern of use is critical in determining adverse effects on health. Perhaps the major area of concern about marijuana use is among the very young. Using any drug on a regular basis that alters reality may be detrimental to the psychosocial maturation of young persons. Chronic use of marijuana may stunt the emotional growth of youngsters. Evidence for an amotivational syndrome is largely based on clinical reports; w

Potential dangers of cannabis.

Cannabis is not a harmless drug. The potential dangers of cannabis are briefly reviewed in this report. The above-mentioned observations on cannabis users should be kept in mind and carefully examined by all physicians. One could expect that as more potent cannabis preparations become available, some of the toxic manifestations which now seem rare might become more frequent. Some of the remarks about the dangers of cannabis may not be proved in future studies, and they may represent only our anxiety. However, prior to the elimination of these fears, no steps should be taken toward the legalizi

Synthetic cannabis-induced mania.

Synthetic cannabinoids (SC), cannabinoid 1 and cannabinoid 2 receptors agonists, are the psychoactive substances. SC was originally produced to treat medical conditions. Compared to other narcotics, SC is easier to obtain, cheap, and highly potent and has a long half-life. In addition, routine analysis does not detect SC, which has led to widespread use. A case is presented that manic episode was developed with the use of SC. Hospitalization and admission to psychiatric units depending on SC use have been observed mostly with psychosis. Although SC-induced affective symptoms were mentioned in

[CANNABIS: ALTERNATIVE REALITIES (CRA)].

In this cross sectional and descriptive study, secondary school students trom the city of Santa Rosa were questioned about their beliefs about cannabis and their risk perception derived from it. The sample consisted in 83 male and 71 female 17 year-old teenagers. On the one hand, it was found that the highest risk perceptions were related to the legal issues that might arise due to cannabis consumption, and to its effects on neurons. On the other hand, the lowest risk perceptions were associated with the belief/ idea that smoking tobacco affects the lungs more than smoking cannabis, which migh

Associations between recreational cannabis legalization and disparities in prenatal tobacco and cannabis use.

INTRODUCTION: Although prenatal cannabis use is rising, whether recreational cannabis legalization (RCL) is driving changes in use of both cannabis and tobacco use remains unknown. We evaluated the associations between legalization and tobacco and cannabis use during pregnancy overall and across demographic and higher-risk strata. METHODS: We linked data on 95 569 women from 21 states and DC who participated in the 2016-2021 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, which collected self-reported tobacco and cannabis use during pregnancy, with state RCL and retail sales availability. Using

Associations between posttraumatic cognitions and cannabis cravings among trauma-exposed individuals using cannabis.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma-exposed individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are at risk for problematic cannabis use. However, modifiable risk factors associated with cannabis use in this population are less clear. Posttraumatic cognitions (PTC; negative cognitions about the self, self-blame, and negative cognitions about the world) have recently been investigated as potential motivators for substance use, particularly to cope with distress, but extant research is limited. The current study tested whether PTC are associated with increased coping-oriented cannabis cravings using an

Uneven effects of twenty years of Chile's cannabis policy implementation in cannabis onset.

BACKGROUND: In Chile, Laws 19366 and 20000, implemented in 1995 and 2005 respectively, regulated and sanctioned cannabis' personal use, cultivation and trafficking. METHODS: We use thirteen biannual cross-sectional national surveys data from 1994 to 2018 to examine the effect of Laws 19366 and 20000-using the rate of individuals incarcerated per 100000 population due to drug-related crimes as proxy-on the age of onset of cannabis use over time. We estimate the effect of these policies using a mixed proportional hazards framework that models the transition to first cannabis use in 47,832 indiv

High potency cannabis use, mental health symptoms and cannabis dependence: Triangulating the evidence.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis potency (concentration of Δ-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol) has been associated with risks of adverse mental health outcomes and addiction but no studies have triangulated evidence from self-report and objective measures of cannabis potency. We hypothesised that users of high potency cannabis would have higher levels of (a) anxiety, (b) depression and (c) psychosis-like symptoms (d) cannabis dependence than users of lower potency cannabis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 410 participants donated a sample of cannabis for analysis of THC concentration and reported their cannabi

Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms and Cannabis Misuse: The Explanatory Role of Cannabis Use Motives.

The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the unique explanatory role of cannabis use motives above the effects of each other, for the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptomatology and different aspects of cannabis misuse among young adults. The transitional years of young adulthood are characterized by new opportunities for experimentation as well as novel external stressors. Collectively, this makes this developmental epoch a sensitive time for manifestations of cannabis misuse. Methods: Bivariate correlations were conducted to examine the association between obsessi

Cannabis problem experiences among users of the tobacco-cannabis combination known as blunts.

BACKGROUND: In most of the world, cannabis smokers mix loose tobacco inside a joint, pipe, spliff, or cone. More recently, a 'blunt' formulation combines these two drugs by inserting cannabis into a hollowed-out cigar. Epidemiological research linking simultaneous use of these two drugs and the development of cannabis use disorders (CUD) remains unclear. This study estimates associations linking blunt smoking with levels and subtypes of cannabis problems. METHODS: Cross-sectional data on 27,767 past-year cannabis users were analyzed from the US National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) c

Naltrexone Maintenance Decreases Cannabis Self-Administration and Subjective Effects in Daily Cannabis Smokers.

Given that cannabis use is increasing in the United States, pharmacological treatment options to treat cannabis use disorder are needed. Opioid antagonists modulate cannabinoid effects and may offer a potential approach to reducing cannabis use. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled human laboratory study, we assessed the effects of naltrexone maintenance on the reinforcing, subjective, psychomotor, and cardiovascular effects of active and inactive cannabis. Nontreatment-seeking, daily cannabis smokers were randomized to receive naltrexone (50 mg: n=18 M and 5 F) or placebo (0 mg; n=26 M an

Cannabis use vulnerability among socially anxious users: cannabis craving during a social interaction.

Socially anxious individuals appear especially vulnerable to cannabis-related problems. However, the nature of the social anxiety-cannabis relation remains unclear. The present study examined the timing and specificity of cannabis craving in response to a social anxiety induction task among 82 (71% female) cannabis users randomly assigned to either a social interaction or reading task. Participants completed ratings of substance (cannabis, alcohol, cigarette) craving at baseline (prior to being informed of task assignment), before, during, and after task. The Time × Condition interaction was s

Working under the influence of cannabis amongst medical cannabis patients with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cannabis use is increasing in the United States, and, on average, those consuming medical cannabis report more frequent cannabis use than those who use recreationally. The present analyses focus on the prevalence and correlates of working under the influence of cannabis (WUIC) amongst individuals with chronic pain who use cannabis medically. METHODS: Adults were recruited from medical cannabis certification clinics in Michigan and individuals who were employed in the past 6 months were included in the analytic sample (N = 362). Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regre

Social media use, cannabis attitudes, and cannabis use among adolescents: An observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with frequent (versus infrequent) social media use display higher cannabis use prevalence. This study examined associations of social media use frequency with pro-cannabis attitudes, an actionable intervention target. METHODS: Youth aged 13-17 in Oklahoma, United States completed an online, cross-sectional survey (March-October 2023) measuring social media use frequency (0-1.5 vs. 1.5+ hours/day), pro-cannabis attitudes (e.g., "cannabis is an effective treatment for mental health problems"), past-month cannabis use (yes/no), and individual characteristics (e.g., age, to

Changes in Incident Schizophrenia Diagnoses Associated With Cannabis Use Disorder After Cannabis Legalization.

IMPORTANCE: Despite public health concerns that cannabis legalization may increase the number of cases of schizophrenia caused by cannabis, there is limited evidence on this topic. OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in the population-attributable risk fraction (PARF) for cannabis use disorder (CUD) associated with schizophrenia after liberalization of medical cannabis and legalization of nonmedical cannabis in Canada. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study was conducted in Ontario, Canada, from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2022, among 13 588 681 people aged 14 t
