The stimulus-basis of a natural food aversion in Norway rats.

During a 30-min test, hungry adult male Norway rats were permitted to feed on male rodents, freshly sacrificed by CO2 asphyxiation. In Experiment 1, the proportion of subjects feeding on the intact carcass of a dead conspecific decreased as a function of the dead conspecific's age. But the proportion of subjects feeding on the intact carcass of a dead house mouse remained high, regardless of the mouse's age. In Experiment 2, Norway rats were as likely to feed on tissue (heart, liver, and blood) from a conspecific as on tissue from a roof rat. In Experiment 3, lesions of increasing size on the

Phenoptosis in arthropods and immortality of social insects.

In general, there are no drastic differences in phenoptosis patterns in plant and animal organisms. However, there are some specific features characteristic for insects and other arthropods: 1) their development includes metamorphosis with different biochemical laws at consecutive developmental stages; 2) arthropods can reduce or stop development and aging when in a state of diapause or temporal cold immobility; 3) their life cycle often correlates with seasonal changes of surroundings; 4) polymorphism is widespread - conspecifics differ by their lifespans and phenoptosis features; 5) lifespan

Experimental transmission of Cryptosporidium molnari (Apicomplexa: Coccidia) to gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.).

Cryptosporidium molnari was experimentally transmitted to gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax) by oral infection with infected stomach scrapings. The infection was also cross-transmitted from infected gilthead sea bream to sea bass by cohabitation. The course of the infection was assessed after necropsy by three microscopic diagnostic methods and their sensitivity was compared. At the end of all the experiments the prevalence of infection reached 100%. In the oral experiments, both fish hosts appeared infected as early as 7 days post exposure (p.e.), b

Trichinella spiralis in an agricultural ecosystem: transmission in the rat population.

Four hundred forty-three Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) were examined to determine their role in the transmission and maintenance of Trichinella spiralis on a pig farm. Rats, classified by sex and weight, were examined for trichinellosis by peptic digestion of muscle samples. Over a 25-mo period, 188 (42.4%) rats were found to be infected with T. spiralis. The mean intensity of infection was 293.2 larvae per gram (LPG) of muscle; 65 (34.6%) infected rats had intensities of infection greater than 100 LPG. Even in the absence of a known source of infected meat (garbage containing meat scraps or

Host Resistance and Behavior Determine Invasion Dynamics of a Detrimental Aquatic Disease.

Understanding the role of variation in host resistance and the multitude of transmission modes of parasites infecting hosts with complex behavioral interactions is essential for the control of emerging diseases. We used a discrete stage model to study the invasion dynamics of crayfish plague-an example of a detrimental disease-into a naïve host population that displays within-population variation in resistance of environmental infections and juvenile classes that are safe from contacts with adults. In the model, infection sources include four age classes of crayfish, contaminated carcasses, an

Eastern equine encephalomyelitis outbreak in coturnix quail.

Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) was the cause of heavy mortality in coturnix quail (Coturnix coturnix) reared commercially in South Carolina. The birds showed depression, tremor, and partial paralysis that advanced into complete paralysis, torticollis, and death within a few hours. The only consistent lesion on necropsy was a catarrhal enteritis in the duodenal area. The disease spread rapidly to all pens throughout the two houses on the farm in all birds over 2 weeks old, and mortality ranged from 40 to 90% in the various pens within the house. Total mortality exceeded 90,000 birds. Ag

Infanticide in chimpanzees: Taphonomic case studies from Gombe.

OBJECTIVES: We present a study of skeletal damage to four chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) infanticide victims from Gombe National Park, Tanzania. Skeletal analysis may provide insight into the adaptive significance of infanticide by examining whether nutritional benefits sufficiently explain infanticidal behavior. The nutritional hypothesis would be supported if bone survivorship rates and skeletal damage patterns are comparable to those of monkey prey. If not, other explanations, such as the resource competition hypothesis, should be considered. METHODS: Taphonomic assessment of two chimpanzee

Plumage condition and health of aviary-kept hens fed mash or crumbled pellets.

In the present experiment, we evaluated the effects on plumage condition and health of feeding a mash or a crumbled diet to two hybrids of laying hens in an aviary system. The two diets had the same composition and calculated nutrient content. A total of 3,204 birds was studied from 20 to 80 wk of age. Two hybrids, Lohmann Selected Leghorn and SLU-1329 (two line crosses of Leghorn and Rhode Island Red), were housed in six pens each of an aviary system with groups of 269 and 265 birds, respectively. There were three replicates per treatment (diet x hybrid). Diet generally had little effect on p

Adrenergic signaling coordinates distant and local responses to amputation in axolotl.

Many species regenerate lost body parts following amputation. Most limb regeneration research has focused on the immediate injury site. Meanwhile, body-wide injury responses remain largely unexplored but may be critical for regeneration. Here, we discovered a role for the sympathetic nervous system in stimulating a body-wide stem cell activation response to amputation that drives enhanced limb regeneration in axolotls. This response is mediated by adrenergic signaling, which coordinates distant cellular activation responses via the α2A-adrenergic receptor, and local regeneration responses via

Neutrophil-rich gastric carcinomas: light and electron microscopic study of 9 cases with particular reference to neutrophil apoptosis.

The authors report 9 cases of gastric carcinomas characterized by a prominent neutrophilic infiltration of the stroma. These tumors (8 of intestinal type, 1 of diffuse type) showed a pushing growth pattern. Metastatic involvement of regional lymph nodes was seen in 5 cases. The metastatic foci were associated with heavy neutrophilia as well. There was no histologic evidence of Helicobacter pylori infection, whereas various degrees of multifocal intestinal metaplasia were present in the background mucosa. Based on histologic and histochemical results, there were no apparent causes due to other

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Prion diseases are rare in children. Three types are known: kuru, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), and iatrogenic CJD. All three affect children and young adults, and are transmitted by infectious contamination. Kuru was the result of ritual funeral practices similar to cannibalism; variant CJD affects young people who have eaten meat from cows with mad cow disease (mostly in the UK); and iatrogenic CJD is secondary to graft of human tissues performed in the 1980s (dura mater, pituitary extracted growth hormone). The disease appears after 4-30 years of incubation. The initial symptomat

Female Phalangium opilio use fellatio to compensate sexual avoidance.

Sexual conflict arises from differences in reproductive interests between the sexes. We allowed the female harvestman Phalangium opilio to sequentially mate with two different males to examine female sexual receptivity in this species. Virgin females were more sexually receptive than non-virgins. Males exhibited a high interest in repeated copulations with the same female, often engaging in aggressive behaviours such as biting and reversed sexual cannibalism. Fellatio, a behaviour in which females lick the male's penis, was observed in 44% of trials and was associated with female unwillingness

Epidemiology of sylvatic trichinellosis in north-western Italy.

Muscle samples from 7,142 wild boars (Sus scrofa), 80 free-ranging hogs, 1,462 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) 90 mustelids, 15 Alpine marmots (Marmota marmota), 873 rodents and 92 insectivores were examined for Trichinella Railliet, 1895. A wild boar, a badger (Meles meles) and 30 foxes (2.1%) were found to be infected. Eleven vulpine isolates and the wild boar isolate were identified as Trichinella britovi. These results show that the wild boar has little significance as a reservoir of T. britovi in the area under study. A vulpine isolate resulted in low infectivity in experimentally-infected swin

The role of autophagy in cardiac hypertrophy.

Autophagy is conserved in nature from lower eukaryotes to mammals and is an important self-cannibalizing, degradative process that contributes to the elimination of superfluous materials. Cardiac hypertrophy is primarily characterized by excess protein synthesis, increased cardiomyocyte size, and thickened ventricular walls and is a major risk factor that promotes arrhythmia and heart failure. In recent years, cardiomyocyte autophagy has been considered to play a role in controlling the hypertrophic response. However, the beneficial or aggravating role of cardiomyocyte autophagy in cardiac hyp

ROCK-I regulates closure of the eyelids and ventral body wall by inducing assembly of actomyosin bundles.

Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) I mediates signaling from Rho to the actin cytoskeleton. To investigate the in vivo functions of ROCK-I, we generated ROCK-I-deficient mice. Loss of ROCK-I resulted in failure of eyelid closure and closure of the ventral body wall, which gave rise to the eyes open at birth and omphalocele phenotypes in neonates. Most ROCK-I(-/-) mice died soon after birth as a result of cannibalization of the omphalocele by the mother. Actin cables that encircle the eye in the epithelial cells of the eyelid were disorganized and accumulation of filamentous actin at the umbilical ri

Foodborne Sporothrix schenckii: infectivity for mice by intraperitoneal and intragastric inoculation with conidia.

Experimental infections with a foodborne isolate of the fungus Sporothrix schenckii were administered to mice by intraperitoneal or intragastric injection and gavage. All injected mice showed evidence of systemic sporotrichosis. Granulomas were observed from day 3 to day 12 in the organs of neonates inoculated by injection; in mice infected by gavage, granulomas were observed only in those inoculated with 10(7) conidia. Susceptibility (based on cultural recovery) of the neonates to infections with 6 X 10(6) conidia of the fungus was 100% with intragastric injection, 91% with intraperitoneal in

RAB-35 regulates distinct steps of trogocytosis in the biting and bitten cell.

Trogocytosis is a form of cellular cannibalism in which a cell "bites" off pieces of another cell. Here, we investigate the molecular mechanisms of a developmentally programmed C. elegans trogocytic event that occurs when endodermal cells bite off and digest pieces of primordial germ cells (PGCs) called lobes. Through a genetic screen, we identify the Rab family small GTPase rab-35 as a central regulator of trogocytosis and show that its function is required in both biting (endodermal) and bitten (PGC) cells. Within endodermal cells, RAB-35 enriches around trogocytosed PGC lobes, promotes the
