BACKGROUND The bacterial organism Capnocytophaga canimorsus is an oral commensal of cats and dogs and can cause life-threatening infections like mycotic aneurysm, meningitis, and sepsis. Mycotic aneurysms occur when microbial infections cause arterial wall degeneration. Difficulty in diagnosing Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection can occur due to the bacteria's fastidious nature and laboratory testing limitations, contributing to the infection's high morbidity and mortality. This report describes the case of a patient with an iliac artery mycotic aneurysm 2 months after a dog bite. Identificat

Capnocytophaga ochracea (C. ochracea) is a species of Gram-negative and facultative anaerobic bacterium. It was first reported in 1979 and isolated from both healthy and diseased sites in the oral flora. The bacteria can cause septicemia, endocarditis, endometritis, blepharoconjunctivitis and other infections. Herein, we present the first cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infection case caused by C. ochracea in humans. Gram-negative fusiform, non-spore forming rods were detected in an anaerobic bottle of CSF culture obtained from a 50-year-old man who had been hospitalized for meningioma in Tianjin Hu

PURPOSE: Antibiotics play an important role in treating periodontal diseases. Due to the effectiveness of antibiotic therapies, their usage in dentistry has significantly increased. The aim of this study focused on the in-vitro susceptibility of different gram-negative oral bacteria species - which are associated with periodontal diseases (Fusobacterium spp., Capnocytophaga spp. and Leptotrichia buccalis) and have different geographical origins (Asia and Europe) - against antimicrobials that are clinically relevant in dental therapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 45 strains were tested (2

We present a rare case of a 71-year-old female. She has a history of irritable bowel syndrome that is diet controlled. However she presented to the emergency department (ED) with a history of diarrhea, weakness, chills and right lower back pain for two days. She was found to have epidural abscesses secondary to Capnocytophaga bacteremia. To date, there has been only one case report of a sacral abscess secondary to Capnocytophaga sp. Capnocytophaga is a genus of facultative anaerobic gram-negative bacilli that are frequent commensals in the oral cavity of cats and dogs. It can be transmitted by

Capnocytophaga canimorsus meningitis is an uncommon but potentially serious cause of meningitis, which is considered particularly rare in healthy and immunocompetent individuals. We present a case of C. canimorsus meningitis in a young, immunocompetent patient which was acquired following a dog bite. We review the literature and propose that underdiagnosis of this condition is likely. To avoid misdiagnosis, and thus improper management, clinicians should ensure that they identify animal exposure in all meningitic patients, and adopt a higher clinical suspicion in the absence of classical risk

BACKGROUND: The use of complement inhibition is well established for complement mediated thrombotic microangiopathy, but its role in secondary forms of thrombotic microangiopathy is debated. We here present a case of thrombotic microangiopathy triggered by Capnocytophaga canimorsus, illustrating the diagnostic difficulties in discriminating between different thrombotic microangiopathies, and the dilemmas regarding how to treat this disease entity.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 56-year-old woman presented with fever and confusion. She was diagnosed with sepsis from Capnocytophaga can

Capnocytophaga canimorsus and Capnocytophaga cynodegmi, both commensal bacteria in the oral cavities of dogs and cats, are zoonotic pathogens. In particular, C. canimorsus causes sepsis and fatal septic shock. Recently, a novel Capnocytophaga species, C. canis, was isolated from the oral cavities of healthy dogs. It is reportedly oxidase-negative and therefore considered avirulent in humans. In the present study, three strains of C. canis were isolated from Japanese patients with sepsis. All three strains, HP20001, HP33001 and HP40001, were oxidase-positive. Nucleotide sequence identities of t

Described in this study is the case of a 53-year-old woman who developed a life-threatening infection caused by the bacterium Capnocytophaga canimorsus (C. canimorsus), subsequent to being bitten by a dog. The patient presented to an Emergency Department with a 24-h history of diarrhoea and vomiting with dehydration but within 36 h of presentation developed an overwhelming severe sepsis with septic shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation, acute renal failure, metabolic acidosis and threatened acute respiratory failure requiring urgent intensive care intervention. At subsequent questionin

Capnocytophaga spp are Gram-negative bacteria commonly identified as oral saprophytes of humans, dogs and cats; they rarely cause invasive infections in immunocompetent subjects. This case report is about a rare case of cerebral abscess caused by Capnocytophaga spp in an immunocompetent subject who had no risk factors for Capnocytophaga invasive infections (oral alterations, traumatic or iatrogenic lesions of pharynx and/or oesophagus, recent dog bite). We also report Capnocytophaga spp naturally resistant to metronidazole, this being the cause of inefficacy of this drug usually included in em

Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection occurs after a dog/cat bite and asplenic patients are most vulnerable. We describe a rare case of myopericarditis due to C. canimorsus infection. A 41-year-old man presented with chest pain and ST-segment elevation to the coronary reperfusion service. He had been unwell for 3 days with fever and diarrhoea. Coronary angiography excluded coronary plaque rupture or occlusion, and transthoracic echocardiography revealed biventricular systolic dysfunction. Cardiac MRI confirmed myopericarditis with extensive circumferential midwall/epicardial late gadolinium enha

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a bacterium of the normal oral flora of dogs and cats. Human infection is caused by animal bite but is rarely observed, mainly in immunocompromised patients. We present 2 cases of C. canimorsus infection that occurred in immunocompetent patients and caused multiorgan failure and in both cases severe neurologic involvement.
CASE REPORT: In the first case, we present a 69-year-old immunocompetent woman with septic shock derived from skin and soft tissue infection after a dog's bite. She developed ischemic necrosis evolving to gangrene of both forefeet an

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a gram-negative, capnophilic rod constituting normal bacterial flora of the oral cavity of dogs and cats. It is also considered to be an etiological factor of infections in human that may lead to multiple complications, i.a. sepsis, endocarditis and meningitis. C. canimorsus poses a serious threat, especially to patients with asplenia, cirrhosis or alcohol abuse. In most cases, infection occurs after a dog bite. Isolation and identification of the bacteria from the biological material is difficult and often delayed because of slow growth of the bacteria on microbio

Information on intraoral distribution of putative periodontal pathogens might be essential for controlling different forms of periodontal disease. Colonization may be either promoted or impeded by other bacteria competing in the subgingival ecosystem. In recent investigations microbial associations between dental organisms have been determined in a multitude of subgingival plaque samples within multiple patients and described by odds ratios, in most circumstances without taking into account the correlated structure of the observations within a single individual. The present investigation had 3

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga sputigena, a fastidious Gram-negative commensal of the human oral flora, rarely causes bloodstream infections but poses significant risks to immunocompromised hosts, particularly those with hematologic malignancies or mucosal barrier injury. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of C. sputigena bacteremia in a 51-year-old man with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) Stage IV (cT3N2M1), as confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The patient, who was undergoing chemotherapy, presented with severe neutropenia (absolute neutrophi

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga spp. are commensal bacteria of the oral cavity and constitute a genus of the core microbiome.
OBJECTIVE: This genus is responsible for many local and systemic conditions in both the immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients, but its beneficial or deleterious role in the microbiota has been little explored.
DESIGN: Online databases were used to identify papers published from 1999 to 2019 based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) data to study comparative trials. Work using other identification methods, case reports, reviews, and non-comparative clinical trials

A 53-year-old Caucasian male with hypertension and active tobacco abuse presented to a community hospital with a 2-day history of vague abdominal pain, myalgia and increased lethargy after being bitten on his right hand by the family dog while camping just 3 days prior to symptom onset. He expired within 90 min upon arrival to our intensive care unit. Pre-mortem blood cultures grew a fastidious Gram-negative aerobic rod that was identified as Capnocytophaga canimorsus. Autopsy findings showed multi-organ disseminated intravascular coagulopathy with microthrombi along with bilateral adrenal hem
