Detection of indigenous gut bacteria related to red chilli pepper (Capsicum annuum) in murine caecum and human faecal cultures.

BACKGROUND: Red chilli pepper (Capsicum annuum; RP) is a popular spice containing the active compound capsaicin. Indigenous gut bacteria and metabolism can affect host health. The functions of capsaicin, including the regulation of metabolic health and anti-oxidant properties, may be correlated with the gut microbiota. METHODS: To identify indigenous gut bacteria that are responsive to RP, Institute of Cancer Research mice fed a diet with no fibre or with 5% (w/w) RP for 14 days. Additionally, human stool samples collected from four healthy volunteers were incubated without (control) or with

Effects of Brines and Containers on Flavor Production of Chinese Pickled Chili Pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) during Natural Fermentation.

The effects of (fresh/aged) brine and (pool/jar) containers on the flavor characteristics of pickled chili peppers were investigated based on a multivariate analysis integrated with kinetics modeling. The results showed that the effect of brine on organic acid, sugar, and aroma was more dominant than that of containers, while free amino acids production was more affected by containers than brines. Chili pepper fermented using aged brine exhibited higher acidity (3.71−3.92) and sugar (7.92−8.51 mg/g) than that using fresh brine (respective 3.79−3.96; 6.50−9.25 mg/g). Besides, chili peppers ferm

Local and systemic hormonal responses in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) leaves under green peach aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer) infestation.

This study examined the temporal changes in the leaf content of defence-involved phytohormones in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants responding to the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer) infestation, at both local and systemic level. Aphid infestation did not alter the content of cis-12-oxo-phytodienoic acid, the jasmonic acid (JA) precursor, even though endogenous levels of JA and its bioactive isoleucine-conjugated form (JA-Ile) significantly increased from 8 to 96 h in local infested leaves. Systemic effects in jasmonates were only showed at 48 h for JA, and 8 and 48 h in the case of

Map-based cloning of the susceptibility locus conditioning bs6 resistance in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) encoding mutant alleles of pseudokinase proteins.

The bs6 resistance gene against bacterial spot was identified by map-based cloning in pepper (C. annuum L.). The recessive bs661 locus of pepper Capsicum annuum L. var. 61R (Ca61R) conditions a non-hypersensitive resistance trait, characterized by a slightly swollen, pale green, photosynthetically active leaf tissue, following Xanthomonas euvesicatoria Race 6 (XeR6) infection. In contrast, C. annuum cv. Feherozon (CaFo) is susceptible to XeR6. Map-based cloning of the bs661 locus revealed that the bs661 locus encodes three predicted proteins, pbs661npk, pbs661n, pbs661pk in Ca61R which are the

A chromosome-scale genome of Capsicum pubescens provides insights into candidate terpene-associated gene clusters and pan variation of terpene synthases.

A chromosome-scale genome of Capsicum pubescens and comparative pan-TPS analysis support structural characterization and gene-level prioritization of a chromosome-9 terpene-associated candidate locus in this accession. Capsicum pubescens is one of the five domesticated Capsicum species, mainly cultivated in mid- to high-elevation regions of the Americas. Despite its distinctive morphology and fruit traits, genomic resources for C. pubescens remain less developed than those for the widely cultivated C. annuum. Here, we assembled a chromosome-scale reference genome for accession HNUCP0001, spann

Modulation of hyperglycemia, insulin resistance responses and gut microbiota composition in type 2 diabetic mice by capsicum residue soluble dietary fiber.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses substantial health risks, emphasizing the need to identify natural ingredients from biological sources that can alleviate its symptoms. Capsicums produce a large amount of capsicum residue (CR) by-products during processing, which are underutilized. CR is rich in soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and has shown potential as an adjunctive hypoglycemic dietary supplement. This study investigated the structure of capsicum residue soluble dietary fiber (CR-SDF), its hypoglycemic effects in T2DM mice fed a high-fat diet combined with streptozotocin, and its hypoglycem

Comparative Transcriptomics Analysis Reveals the Differences in Transcription between Resistant and Susceptible Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Varieties in Response to Anthracnose.

Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is a herbaceous plant species in the family Solanaceae. Capsicum anthracnose is caused by the genus Colletotrichum. spp., which decreases pepper production by about 50% each year due to anthracnose. In this study, we evaluated the resistance of red ripe fruits from 17 pepper varieties against anthracnose fungus Colletotrichum capsici. We assessed the size of the lesion diameter and conducted significance analysis to identify the resistant variety of B158 and susceptible variety of B161. We selected a resistant cultivar B158 and a susceptible cultivar B161 of pepper

Red Pepper (Capsicum baccatum) Extracts Present Anti-Inflammatory Effects In Vivo and Inhibit the Production of TNF-α and NO In Vitro.

Capsicum baccatum is the most consumed red pepper species in Brazil. Our previous studies demonstrated the anti-inflammatory properties of its crude extract, whose activity is yet to be fully characterized. Herein, we examined the anti-inflammatory in vivo effects of enriched extracts obtained through bioguided fractionation as dichloromethane (DCM), butanol (BUT), and residual aqueous (RAq) extracts and its influence on inflammatory mediators produced by macrophages in vitro. We demonstrated that all C. baccatum extracts presented anti-inflammatory activity in vivo. In addition, we showed tha

5-Aminolevulinic acid and hydrogen sulphide alleviate chilling stress in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings by enhancing chlorophyll synthesis pathway.

5- Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) as a precursor in chlorophyll (Chl) synthesis and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) as a gas signalling molecules can alleviate various abiotic stresses by enhancing photosynthesis. However, little is known about their mechanisms ameliorating photosynthesis under chilling stress, or interactions of ALA and H2S in Chl synthesis. In this study, we explored the effects of exogenous ALA and H2S on chilling stress-induced photosynthesis damage in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings. Chilling inhibited the photosynthetic capacity of pepper seedlings, ALA or H2S treatment alone c

Characterization of carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils and oligosaccharides from Kraft pulp fibers and their potential elicitor effect on the gene expression of Capsicum annuum.

Biomass-derived oligo- and polysaccharides may act as elicitors, i.e., bioactive molecules that trigger plant immune responses. This is particularly important to increase the resistance of plants to abiotic and biotic stresses. In this study, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) gels were obtained by TEMPO-mediated oxidation of unbleached and bleached kraft pulps. The molecular structures were characterized with ESI and MALDI MS. Analysis of the fine sequences was achieved by MS and MS/MS of the water-soluble oligosaccharides obtained by acid hydrolysis of the CNF gels. The analysis revealed the presen

Flower visitors of chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) in West Bengal and assessing yield enhancement by stingless bee (Tetragonula pagdeni Schwarz) pollination.

Amid growing concerns over the decline of pollinator populations, understanding the diversity of pollinators is essential for optimising crop yields. The wild pollinators of chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens) in West Bengal, India, have not yet been fully documented, and the potential of stingless bees as commercial pollinators remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to identify the floral visitors of chili pepper and to assess the pollination efficiency of stingless bees (Tetragonula pagdeni).
