Enhancing the Cycling Stability by Tuning the Chemical Bonding between Phosphorus and Carbon Nanotubes for Potassium-Ion Battery Anodes.

Phosphorus/carbon (P/C) composites as promising potassium-ion storage materials have been extensively investigated for its compound superiorities of high specific capacity and favorable electronic conductivity. However, the effects of different chemical bonding states between P and the carbon matrix for potassium-ion storage and cycling performance still need to be investigated. Herein, three P/C composites with different chemical bonding states were successfully fabricated through simply ball-milling red P with carboxylic group carbon nanotubes (CGCNTs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and reduced c

Epidermal carbonic anhydrase activity and exoskeletal metal content during the molting cycle of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus.

During the crustacean molting cycle, the exoskeleton is first mineralized in postmolt and intermolt and then presumably demineralized in premolt in order for epidermal retraction to occur. The mineralization process calls for divalent metal ions, such as Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) , and bicarbonate ions whereas protons are necessary for dissolution of carbonate salts. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) has been suggested to be involved in exoskeletal mineralization by providing bicarbonate ions through catalyzing the reaction of carbon dioxide hydration. However, results of earlier studies on the role of epiderma

Microbial potential for construction and degradation of the cryoconite biofilm matrix: Implications for carbon and nutrient cycling in Antarctic cryoconite holes.

Cryoconite granule formation underpins the physical structure and biogeochemical functioning of glacier cryoconite holes. Central to this process is the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix, produced by microorganisms, which binds microbial cells and mineral particles into stable aggregates while retaining organic matter and nutrients. However, the physiological traits governing the EPS matrix construction and degradation remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated microbial capacities for biofilm formation, EPS-related substrate utilization, and extracellular hydrolysis in Antar

Responses of Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Cycling Gene Abundances to Winter Green Manure Incorporation in a Ratoon Rice System.

Winter green manure incorporation is widely practised in southern China, yet its effect on soil carbon and nitrogen cycling gene abundances across a full ratoon rice cycle remains unclear. A field experiment combined three cropping systems differing in winter management (winter fallow-ratoon rice, FA; rapeseed-ratoon rice, RA; and Chinese milk vetch-ratoon rice, MV) with two ratoon rice varieties (Yliangyou 911 and Liangyou 6326). Soil properties and functional gene abundances were measured at three soil depths and three sampling stages, and theoretical grain yield was determined in the main a

Insights into the changes of soil microorganism communities and carbon cycle metabolic functions caused by the application of L-glufosinate-ammonium.

L-glufosinate-ammonium (L-GLA), a widely used herbicide, exerts detrimental non-target effects on crops, soil microorganisms, and ecosystems. However, its impacts on soil microbial communities and metabolic functions remain poorly understood. In this study, we applied L-GLA at two concentrations-600 g a.i. hm-2 (low, L) and 3,000 g a.i. hm-2 (high, H)-to yellow-brown soil and investigated its effects on microbial community composition, carbon cycle-related metabolic functions, and soil metabolites using integrated metagenomics and soil environmental pseudotargeted metabolomics at 30 and 60 day

Clipping-and-burning alters carbon and nitrogen cycling through bacterial fixation pathways in the key Chinese karst region.

Clip-and-burn is a forestry and land management technique common in China and other tropical regions worldwide to clear land for agriculture or to manage vegetation. However, the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen in karst regions following clip-and-burn practices remain largely unknown. Here, we evaluate the impact of clip-and-burn management practices on carbon and nitrogen cycling in the Karst region of China. The treatments included high-intensity fire (HIF), low-intensity fire (LIF), clipping and fire (CF), clipping (CP), and control (CK). Soil samples were collected one year after treatment

Mood-dependent changes of serum lithium concentration in a rapid cycling patient maintained on stable doses of lithium carbonate.

OBJECTIVE: Serum lithium levels may be influenced by mood state. We report on a 58-year-old female patient suffering from rapid cycling bipolar disorder. Her serum lithium levels varied greatly, despite stable medication. METHODS: The patient was observed over a one-year period. RESULTS: The patient received a stable medication of lithium carbonate (450 mg), valproate (1500 mg), and clozapine (200 mg). Investigating mood and serum lithium levels over one year revealed six manic and six depressive phases. The mean lithium serum level was 0.67 mmol/L in the depressive states, 0.39 mmol/L in th

Cu-catalyzed synthesis of diaryl thioethers and S-cycles by reaction of aryl iodides with carbon disulfide in the presence of DBU.

Diaryl thioethers and S-cycles were obtained on the basis of the copper-catalyzed reaction of carbon disulfide and aryl iodides in the presence of DBU. This reaction enables the one-pot synthesis of diaryl thioethers by employing cheap, available, and easy-to-handle carbon disulfide with aryl iodides. The reaction was successfully employed in the construction of sulfur-containing cyclic molecules.

Superheated steam for regeneration of biomass-derived activated carbon: comparative evaluation of performance, life cycle impacts and net CO2 offset potential.

Coconut-shell derived activated carbon (AC); GCN has been used extensively in water treatment as an efficient adsorbent material. However, ACs progressively saturate with contaminants over time and require periodic regeneration to regain adsorption efficiency. This study presents an advanced superheated steam (SPH) (at 600 °C) method to regenerate saturated AC. This steam drives adsorbed contaminants to break down and detach from the carbon pores. With a regeneration efficiency of 95 %, SPH regeneration outperforms conventional chemical regeneration methods. The study also involves a comprehen

Sidestream vs. mainstream AnMBR for low-carbon wastewater treatment: a comprehensive life-cycle techno-economic and environmental assessment under stochastic uncertainties.

Municipal wastewater treatment is transitioning towards energy and resource recovery. However, conventional activated sludge (CAS) and mainstream anaerobic membrane bioreactors (M-AnMBR), which directly treat the bulk flow of low-strength municipal wastewater for organic removal, are constrained by high carbon footprints or energy demands. Sidestream AnMBR (S-AnMBR) treats a small-volume, carbon-rich stream concentrated from the mainstream wastewater, physically decoupling carbon and water flows via chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT), offering a promising solution to these bottleneck

[Soil Functional Genes of Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Sulfur Cycle at Different Restoration Stages of Ulmus pumila in Pingshuo Mining Area].

Open-pit coal mining has caused serious damage to the ecological environment, and vegetation restoration is a major management for ecological restoration in mining areas. The nutrient cycling mediated by soil microorganisms is closely related to the soil functional genes. Studying the effects of long-term vegetation restoration on soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur functional genes is of great significance for ecological restoration in mining areas. The reclamation of Ulmus pumila (UP) forest land in the Pingshuo open-pit coal mine was selected as the research object. Rhizosphere so

Unveiling non-linear thresholds of life-cycle carbon emissions in small reservoirs: an integrated stochastic EI-LCA and machine learning framework.

Small reservoirs are critical for rural water security, yet their life-cycle carbon emissions remain poorly quantified due to extreme data scarcity and non-linear emission dynamics. Conventional Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) often rely on static assumptions, failing to capture complex multi-variable interactions. To overcome this, we propose an integrated stochastic framework coupling Environmentally Extended Input-Output LCA (EI-LCA) with Monte Carlo simulations, Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP). Applied to the Huxingdi Reservoir in China, the frame

The glyoxylate cycle and alternative carbon metabolism as metabolic adaptation strategies of Candida glabrata: perspectives from Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

BACKGROUND: Carbon utilization and metabolism are fundamental to every living organism for cellular growth. For intracellular human fungal pathogens such as Candida glabrata, an effective metabolic adaptation strategy is often required for survival and pathogenesis. As one of the host defence strategies to combat invading pathogens, phagocytes such as macrophages constantly impose restrictions on pathogens' access to their preferred carbon source, glucose. Surprisingly, it has been reported that engulfed C. glabrata are able to survive in this harsh microenvironment, further suggesting alterna

Analysis of Carbon Cycle Interference Mechanisms in Karst Rivers under the Combined Influence of Acid Mine Drainage and Multi-source Anthropogenic Pollution.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) triggers complex environmental chain reactions, including hydrochemical imbalance, heavy metal accumulation, and carbon cycle disruption. In karst regions, the coupled surface-subsurface structure accelerates pollutant migration and environmental risks. AMD-induced dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) loss and enhanced carbonate dissolution weaken the karst carbon sink. To clarify the AMD effects on carbon cycling in karst rivers, this study investigated the Yudong River Basin in Kaili City, Guizhou Province, China. Based on multi-temporal sampling data collected from 2024

Gate-to-gate life cycle assessment of sophorolipid production with Starmerella bombicola: Impact of cultivation conditions and scale-up on carbon footprint.

Sophorolipid, a biosurfactant which can be fermentatively produced by the yeast Starmerella bombicola using sugars and lipids as carbon sources, exhibits several advantageous properties over synthetic detergents, such as biodegradability and low toxicity. While some life cycle assessment (LCA) studies have been reported to evaluate the environmental impact of sophorolipid production, carbon footprint estimations remain limited. In this study, we combined small-scale experimental data with large-scale simulation data to estimate the carbon footprint of the fermentative production of sophorolipi

Life cycle analysis, leaching, technical and mechanical properties of wallboards composed of flue gas desulfurization gypsum and fly ash with carbon fibers.

This research focused on analyzing the physical, mechanical, and leaching properties of wallboards manufactured with gypsum (79-100% wt) derived from flue gas desulfurization (FGD-G) along with fly ash (0 and 20% wt). Two different heating temperatures of FGD-G, 120 °C and 130 °C, were used as well as two water-to-solid weight ratios, 0.4 and 0.6. Although fly ash is classified as hazardous waste (due to Se) and gypsum is considered inert waste, a leaching stabilization process was observed in a matrix consisting of 20% wt of fly ash and 80% wt of gypsum. However, the addition of fly ash, high

Ultra-Long Cycle Life in Lithium-Carbon Dioxide Batteries via Synergistic Solution Pathway Regulation and Redox-Mediating Effect of Mo/Co Species.

During the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) process in Li-CO2 batteries, molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) catalysts have attracted wide attention owing to the 2-electron lithium oxalate (Li2C2O4) route, while the formation of lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) is often inevitable due to the disproportionation of C2O4 2-. In this study, benefit from the introduction of Co to Mon+C catalyst, a rapid diffusion of Li2C2O4 has been realized with a solution-mediated dissolution process, leading to heterostructure products with mixed growth of Li2CO3 and C. Furthermore, in this Co-loaded Mon+C catalyst, the Mo+2/+3C
