Carbonization of a radicular cyst using fiber-optic diode laser: a case report.

A female patient, 51 years old, complaint of painful swelling on the anatomical area of the upper left lateral incisor. The diagnosis of radicular cyst was confirmed histo-pathologically. Nowadays, radicular cysts may be treated using conventional root canal methods or surgical apicectomy. The possible soft-laser reaction to radicular cysts after contact application has not been investigated. We present an in vitro case of a diagnosed radicular cyst which carbonized after contact application of diode laser. The need for future clinical trials will be essential to prove the sensitivity of this

Adsorption of SO2 and NO from incineration flue gas onto activated carbon fibers.

Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were used to remove SO2 and NO from incineration flue gas. Three types of ACFs in their origin state and after pretreatment with HNO3, NaOH, and KOH were investigated. The removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were determined experimentally at defined SO2 and NO concentrations and at temperatures of 150, 200 and 260 degrees C. Experimental results indicated that the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO using the original ACFs were < 56% and < 27%, respectively. All ACFs modified with HNO3, NaOH, and KOH solution could increase the removal efficiencies of SO(2) and NO.

Immunocytochemical localization of carbonic anhydrase in myelinated fibers in peripheral nerves of rat and mouse.

Rat sciatic nerve, spinal root, and cranial nerve were immunostained with an antibody against rat brain carbonic anhydrase II (ca), to determine the localization of ca in the rat peripheral nervous system (PNS). Similar methods were applied to mouse nerves to see if that antigen could be detected in the PNS of this species. In rat nerves, intense immunostaining was observed in the axoplasm of many of the myelinated fibers, whereas others were stained less intensely or were negative. A heterogeneous pattern of immunostaining was also found in neuronal perikarya within the ganglia, and in some r

Electrospinning fabrication of ethanol lignin/polyacrylonitrile composite carbon fibers for supercapacitor applications.

Supercapacitors, known for their high safety, long cycle life, rapid charging and discharging rates, and high power density, are widely used in portable electronic devices, aerospace applications, and new energy electric vehicles. However, the high cost and environmental impact of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers, the most commonly used electrode materials, limit their further development. In this study, low molecular weight ethanol lignin was mixed with PAN for the first time, and lignin-based carbon fibers with excellent electrochemical properties were prepared using electrospinni

Radiation and electrostatic resistance for ultra-stable polymer composites reinforced with carbon fibers.

Future space travel needs ultra-lightweight and robust structural materials that can withstand extreme conditions with multiple entry points to orbit to ensure mission reliability. This is unattainable with current inorganic materials. Ultra-highly stable carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) have shown susceptibility to environmental instabilities and electrostatic discharge, thereby limiting the full lightweight potential of CFRP. A more robust and improved CFRP is needed in order to improve space travel and structural engineering further. Here, we address these challenges and present a s

Effect of pre-oxidation temperature and heating rate on the microstructure of lignin carbon fibers.

Lignin is a biopolymer with high carbon content, making lignin-based carbon fiber an important research direction. In the process of carbonization to prepare carbon fibers, lignin fibers are easily softened and fused, which destroys the microstructure of fibers, thereby reducing the quality of lignin-based carbon fibers. Therefore, it is non-negligible to pre-oxidize lignin fibers before carbonization to prevent fiber fusion and maintain fiber structure. Therefore, the effects of pre-oxidation temperature and heating rate on the structure of pre-oxidation lignin fibers with controllable diamet

Activated carbon fiber for heterogeneous activation of persulfate: implication for the decolorization of azo dye.

Activated carbon fiber (ACF) was used as a green catalyst to activate persulfate (PS) for oxidative decolorization of azo dye. ACF demonstrated a higher activity than activated carbon (AC) to activate PS to decolorize Orange G (OG). The decolorization efficiency of OG increased as ACF loading, PS dosage, and temperature increased. OG decolorization followed a pseudo first-order kinetics, and the activation energy was 40.902 kJ/mol. pH had no apparent effect on OG decolorization. Radical quenching experiments with various radical scavengers (e.g., alcohols, phenol) showed that radical-induced d

The performance and efficiency of cycling with a carbon fiber eccentric chainring during incremental exercise.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare cycling performance and efficiency of a carbon fiber eccentric chainring (EC) versus a metallic standard chainring (SC) during an incremental exercise. The main feature of EC was that crank-arm length changed as a function of the crank angle, being maximal during the pushing phase and minimal during the recovery one. Because of its design, cycling with EC was expected to develop higher torque during the downstroke, and lower torque during the upstroke, thus increasing mechanical efficiency and requiring lower cardioventilatory solicitation at submaxima

Pitch-Based Carbon Fiber Composites: From Interfacial Engineering to Advanced Thermal Management and Energy Storage.

Pitch-based carbon fibers are gaining significant attention as next-generation structural and functional materials owing to their ultrahigh thermal conductivity and exceptional elastic modulus, which surpass those of conventional polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers. However, their inherent brittleness and poor interfacial bonding with various matrices pose significant challenges for the practical fabrication of composites. This review provides a comprehensive overview encompassing the entire "materials-processing-applications" cycle of pitch-based carbon fiber composites. We systematically e

Sterilization-Induced Property Changes in FDM-Printed Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polycarbonate for Medical Device Applications.

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) of carbon fiber-reinforced polycarbonate (PC-CF) is increasingly used in medical applications due to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio and adaptability for custom geometries. However, sterilization is a critical step that may compromise the structural integrity of polymer composites. This study investigates the effects of two low-temperature sterilization methods-ethylene oxide (EO) and hydrogen peroxide vapor (HP)-on the mechanical, thermal, and viscoelastic properties of FDM-printed PC-CF parts. Characterization included tensile, impact, and hardness test

Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) vs. Titanium Plates for Upper Limb Fractures: A Systematic Review.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) plates have emerged as alternatives to titanium locking plates for fixation of upper-limb fractures. Advantages may include an elastic modulus closer to bone, fewer imaging artefacts, and reduced stress shielding. This systematic review synthesizes comparative clinical evidence. We analyzed data from five comparative studies (n = 210 patients; CFR-PEEK = 108, titanium = 102) provided in the dataset. Searches of PubMed and the Cochrane Library identified relevant trials. Data were extracted for demographics, interventions, functional outco

Self-Standing Carbon Fiber Electrodes Doped with Pd Nanoparticles as Electrocatalysts in Zinc-Air Batteries.

In this work, the effect of the palladium precursor on the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) performance of lignin-based electrospun carbon fibers was studied. The fibers were spun from a lignin-ethanol solution free of any binder, where different Pd salts were added at two concentration levels. The system implemented to perform the spinning was a coaxial setup in which the internal flow contains the precursor dispersion with the metallic precursor, and ethanol was used as external flow to help fiber formation and prevent drying before generating the Taylor cone. The obtained cloths were thermos

Simulation of Carbon Dioxide Absorption in a Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactor Under Non-Isothermal Conditions.

CO2 capture by membrane gas absorption technology has been considered a promising alternative to mitigate or stabilize atmospheric CO2 concentrations. The non-isothermal nature of the CO2 absorption process in hollow fiber membrane contactors is a critical factor that significantly influences CO2 removal performance. In the present study, a non-isothermal mathematical model and a two-dimensional computational simulation were carried out to evaluate the CO2 separation by three typical absorbents in a polyvinylidene fluoride hollow fiber membrane contactor under non-wetting operation mode. The s

Theoretical Prediction Method for Tensile Properties of High-Strength Steel/Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Laminates.

This study introduces a method for predicting the tensile properties of high-strength steel/carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite laminates using Metal Volume Fraction (MVF) theory. DP590 and DP980 high-strength steels (thickness ~0.8 mm) were selected as substrates, and composite laminates were fabricated by compression molding with CFRP prepreg. Tensile tests were performed on an MTS universal testing machine, and fracture morphology was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrated a typical mixed failure mode: necking and fracture in the metal layer

Tribological Properties of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced PEEK against 304 Stainless Steel with Reticulate Surface Texture.

With the aim of improving the durability and reliability of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites reinforced with carbon fiber (CF) as thrust bearings without lubricants, a reticulate surface texture was fabricated by plane honing on a stainless steel (SS) counterpart to promote its tribological properties. Pin-on-disk experiments were designed, with the results showing that the reticulate surface texture effectively reduces the friction coefficient from 0.40 to 0.20 compared with the polished SS surface, within the range of the pv value from 0.185 to 1.85 MPa∙m/s. The wear mechanism of the p

Study on Shearing Behavior of Circular Concrete-Filled CFRP (Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastics)-Steel Tube.

Concrete-filled CFRP steel tube (CF-CFRP-ST) structures often suffer from shear loading in practical engineering, such as joints with diagonal braces. To study the shear properties of CF-CFRP-ST, we take the concrete strength and the longitudinal CFRP layers as the main parameters, and static shear tests of overall 9 circular concrete-filled CFRP-steel tube (C-CF-CFRP-ST) and 3 circular concrete-filled steel tube (C-CFST) are carried out. The research is carried out from two aspects: experiment and finite element. The experimental results show that the shear loading-displacement curves of the
