High-Impact Actions to Reduce the Carbon Dioxide Footprint in an Ophthalmic Operation Room: A Narrative Review.

Germany's health care footprint accounts for 5.2% of the national emissions footprint which results in 0.71 tons of CO2 emission per capita. Thus, the health sector has a responsibility to take climate action. Surgery is a resource-intensive health care activity, requiring expensive equipment, sterilization procedures, advanced operative technologies, and obligatory life support systems. We spotlight the situation in a department of ophthalmology with frequent anesthesia services and highly standardized procedures. This narrative review discusses high-impact actions which result in a major red

[Contribution of medical devices to the carbon footprint of an ambulatory surgery unit: Current assessment and decarbonization perspectives].

Healthcare represents 8% of France's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Medical devices procurement contributes for 30% of this footprint. Within our hospital group, carbon footprint (CF) assessment is being extended to several care pathways in ambulatory surgery units (ASU). This study aimed to quantify the ASU CF and identify the principal emission hotspots. A multidisciplinary team performed a two-week activity-based inventory in 2023. Data were converted to CO2e using appropriate emission factors. The assessment covered water, energy, patient and staff transportation, acquisition and maintena…

Measuring the Carbon Footprint for Health Systems and Suppliers: A Collaborative Field Study by Providence and Becton Dickinson.

The carbon emissions from assets owned by health systems are a small fraction of their total carbon footprint. The emissions produced by their suppliers of products and services - such as electricity and transportation - are typically more than 10 times a hospital's direct emissions. In this study, two entities, a large health system and its major supplier of syringes, applied the E-liability carbon accounting method to calculate the total emissions produced from manufacturing and transporting syringes to hospital sites, and from their subsequent use and disposal. The article describes the ste…

Application of a mitigation method for nitrous oxide emission in a full-scale Carrousel reactor: Carbon footprint assessment.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from biological nitrogen removal processes in sewage treatment plants greatly contribute to their overall carbon footprint. The present study aimed to mitigate N2O emissions from an elliptical Carrousel bioreactor in a full-scale plant. The oxygen supply agitators equipped at the influent point and the opposite side of the reactor was operated alternately. The dissolved N2O (DN2O) concentrations were lowered when the agitator at the influent point was suspended while that on the opposite side was running. This scenario was associated with high levels of complement…

Revisiting the Carbon Footprint of Single-Use Technologies in Biomanufacturing: A Bottom-Up Analysis Reveals a Paradigm Shift.

The biopharmaceutical industry increasingly relies on single-use technologies (SUT) for operational flexibility. For a long time, SUT was considered more sustainable than stainless-steel (SST) systems due to water and energy savings. This study re-evaluates this paradigm via a detailed bottom-up analysis of the SUT carbon footprint at the 2000 L scale. Our analysis, based on two real-world facility case studies (a full-SUT and a hybrid-SUT model), shows that the CO2 footprint of SUT is significantly higher than previously assumed. This granular analysis, based on physical disassembly and updat…

A Hybrid LCA Framework for Drug-Level Carbon Footprint Assessment under Data Constraints: Application to Narrower-Spectrum Penicillin.

Understanding differences in drug-specific carbon footprints across countries is increasingly important as healthcare sustainability and product-level reporting gain prominence in regulatory initiatives, such as digital product passports, yet such estimates remain largely unavailable due to sparse drug-level data. Here, we develop a hybrid life cycle assessment framework that enables quantification of drug-specific carbon footprints across regions under real-world data constraints. It combines drug-level life cycle inventory with international consumption and trade statistics and embeds a stru…

Carbon footprint of coke-making in Europe and the cost-effectiveness of plant design: Optimization by using alternative reductants.

This study evaluates the potential of partially replacing coking coal-a critical raw material-with solid recovered fuel (SRF) pellets made from non-recyclable waste plastics. Total CO2 emissions and gross profit (GP) from metallurgical coke production in 2019, 2022, and 2023 were assessed across nine plant configurations under two scenarios: the Benchmark Scenario (BS) using only coking coal, and the AlterCoal Scenario (AS) replacing 2 wt% of the coking coal by SRF pellets. Results show indirect and total emissions in the AS decreased by 5.7 % and 6.4 %, respectively. Higher pellet density inc
