Increased risk for diabetes mellitus in patients with carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide poisoning (COP) causes hypoxic injury and inflammatory and immunological reactions in the brain and local organs including the pancreas. Therefore, it is plausible that COP may increase the risk for developing diabetes mellitus (DM), but studies on this possible association are limited. We conducted a nationwide study in Taiwan to fill the data gap. We used the Nationwide Poisoning Database and the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000 to identify all COP patients diagnosed between 1999 and 2012 (the study cohort) and then construct a comparison cohort of patients without

Ischemic colitis associated with acute carbon monoxide poisoning--a case report.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is common, but it has rarely been reported to cause ischemic colitis. In this case, a 34-year-old female with depression presented to an emergency department after a period of unconsciousness, with urinary and bowel incontinence, following exposure to car exhaust. Her carboxyhemoglobin level was 23%. She had metabolic acidosis. She was transferred to our facility for hyperbaric oxygen treatment, where she had intractable nausea/vomiting with abdominal pain and bright-red bleeding per rectum. She exhibited lower abdominal tenderness and hypoactive bowel sounds. Vi

[Urgent cesarean section in a pregnant woman with carbon monoxide poisoning].

Recognition of carbon monoxide is difficult due to its plain physical-chemical properties. Carbon and gas operating heating systems may cause severe poisoning. Carbon-monoxide intoxication may generate severe hypoxic damage and it may cause death. The authors present the case of severe carbon monoxide poisoning affecting one young child and five adults, including a pregnant woman. Because the availability of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is limited in Hungary, urgent cesarean section was performed to avoid intrauterine hypoxic damage. The authors note that there are no standardized non-invasive me

Treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning with hyperbaric oxygen and therapeutic hypothermia.

We present a preliminary case report series of severe, acute carbon monoxide poisoning in which both hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) and therapeutic hypothermia (TH) were used to ameliorate neurological sequelae. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a standard indication for HBO2. While typically used postcardiac arrest, TH has been used for other types of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Four patients were found comatose from carbon monoxide exposure. They were intubated and treated with high-flow oxygen before transfer to our hospital for HBO2. All received three HBO2 treatments and 24 hours of TH with a goa

Carbon monoxide poisoning and death in a large enclosed ventilated area.

A 55-year-old man with a medical history of tobacco use suddenly collapsed while power washing an empty indoor pool in a hotel. The decedent was transported to the local hospital where he was pronounced. A postmortem examination revealed atherosclerotic heart disease and bilateral pulmonary edema and congestion. A postmortem blood carbon monoxide (CO) level was 27% saturation, and a CO performed on hospital admission blood was 49% saturation. CO poisoning is a common cause of toxicological morbidity and mortality in the United States. The circumstances most often occur in an enclosed environme

Increased long-term mortality among survivors of acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

OBJECTIVE: Recent data suggest that patients surviving acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning (COP) may have increased risk for long-term mortality. The objective of this study was to analyze long-term mortality of a large population of CO-poisoned patients treated at one medical center over three decades. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of patients treated with hyperbaric oxygen and surviving the acute poisoning episode. Long-term mortality was compared to a standard population. Comparison of mortality within the cohort by clinical indicators of poisoning severity was assessed using Cox pro

Prospective study of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in 38 Swiss soldiers.

BACKGROUND: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is associated with a wide range of non-specific symptoms, whose time course and prognostic significance are ill defined. METHODS: We observed a large CO poisoning in a homogenous cohort of 38 male recruits and compared their symptoms with those of 46 unexposed controls from the same military unit. Incident and prevalent symptoms were assessed by sequential questionnaires. FINDINGS: Carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) concentration extrapolated to the time of rescue was 30.4 +/- 6.1%. Six recruits were initially unconscious, and five others were unable to get

Carbon monoxide poisoning with features of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

A previously healthy 58-year-old man had severe carbon monoxide poisoning. Following a comatose state, tics of the head, coprolalia, fits of shouting, and abnormal vocal utterances developed. In addition to the signs of diffuse encephalopathy, he had some of the features associated with idiopathic Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. The computed tomographic scan showed ventricular enlargement and low-density areas in the basal ganglia.

Lactate as a prognostic factor in carbon monoxide poisoning: a case report.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning results in various neuropsychological impairments, including delayed encephalopathy (DE) and death. However, factors related to these outcomes are unknown. A group suicide was attempted by 3 young people--a 31-year-old man (patient 1), a 21-year-old woman (patient 2), and a 20-year-old man (patient 3)--by burning charcoal in a closed car. At the emergency department, hypotension and hyperthermia were severe in patient 1, moderate in patient 2, and absent in patient 3, although all the patients were comatose. The initial serum lactate levels were 75.1 mg/dL in pat

A case of carbon monoxide poisoning with thrombus in the heart: a case report.

Carbon monoxide is a nonirritant, odorless, colorless gas, and is lighter than air. It is an end product of the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. Its effects are most prominent in organs sensitive to oxygen deprivation, such as the heart, brain, and kidney. Carbon monoxide poisoning becomes more abundant in winter and at cold places. In Turkey, every year we see several deaths due to poisonous gas leaks from coal or wood stoves. Deaths particularly due to hypoxia-related central nervous system damage and ventricular dysrhythmias are observed. On the other hand, an association between thro

Carbon monoxide poisoning as a new method of suicide in Hong Kong.

The incidence in Hong Kong of intentional carbon monoxide poisonings by burning charcoal in a confined space was investigated. In the two-year study period, 22 (39 percent) of the 56 reported cases occurred in the three months following a highly publicized case in which this method was used to commit suicide; no cases were reported before the publicized incident. Individuals who used this method were younger on average (mean, 39 years) than those who used the more common methods of jumping (mean, 47 years) and hanging (mean, 55 years). The authors speculate that this form of suicide is becomin

Successful cardiac transplantation with methanol or carbon monoxide-poisoned donors.

BACKGROUND: Patients succumbing to methanol or carbon monoxide poisoning are usually rejected for heart donation. Increasing demand for donors has lead to the expansion of acceptance criteria and increased use of the marginal donor. METHODS: We transplanted hearts from donors who had had methanol intoxication in three cases and carbon monoxide exposure in two cases. Standard donor evaluation criteria and transplantation techniques were used. RESULTS: All of the transplants were successful. Three of the recipients required significant inotropic support for a few days postoperatively; however,
