The HK-1 cell line established from a human large cell lung carcinoma shows a high transformed phenotype and undifferentiated characteristics. This cell line grows as an adherent monolayer in fetal calf serum-supplemented medium, shows a high proliferation index, is able to grow in semi-solid agar and is tumorigenic in athymic nude rats. The cell line HK-2 derived from the HK-1 xenograft in athymic nude rats shows basically the same features found in the original HK-1 cell line, which include aneuploid nuclear DNA content, abnormal chromosomal number. rearranged marker chromosomes and abnormal

A 64-year-old woman underwent initial 18 F-FDG PET/CT staging for a suspicious endometrial mass, which showed high uptake in the endometrial mass and a focal uptake in a known left thyroid nodule. Histology revealed a high-grade large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium with FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) stage Ib. Further explorations revealed a synchronous thyroid metastasis. Patient then received adjuvant immunochemotherapy. This case showed a potential pitfall in the initial assessment of this rare and aggressive malignancy on which the therapeuti

BACKGROUND: Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is a rare subtype of prostate cancer. The pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, treatment options, and prognosis are uncertain and underreported.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in April 2022 through PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane. We reviewed cases of LCNEC developed either from de novo or transformation from prostate adenocarcinoma and summarized the relevant pathophysiological course, treatment options, and outcomes.
RESULTS: A total of 25 patients with a mean age of 70.4 (range 43 87 years old) from 18 studies

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are most often found in the small intestine, rectum, appendix, and stomach. The colon, excluding the appendix and the cecum, is a rare location for these neoplasms and often gives rise to highly proliferative, poorly differentiated tumors with aggressive features and dismal prognosis. A 32-year-old male presents with a large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma arising from an unusual location, the descending colon. The patient's clinical and imaging characteristics resembles those seen in the much more common neoplasm, colonic adenocarcinoma. Computed tomography and In-111 o

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater is extremely rare. A 55 year old woman presented with an ampullary tumour causing pancreaticobiliary obstruction and a pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. Microscopically, the tumour was diagnosed as a CD117 positive large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma with glandular differentiation. Four months later the patient developed a general recurrence. The metastatic tumours showed CD117 negativity and pure neuroendocrine features. The patient died of disease six months after diagnosis. It is postulated that the two components originated f

Neuroendocrine carcinomas (NEC) of the breast are exceedingly rare tumors, which are classified in the WHO system as small cell (SCNEC) and large cell (LCNEC) carcinoma based on indistinguishable features from their lung counterparts. In contrast to lung and enteropancreatic NEC, the genomics of breast NEC have not been well-characterized. In this study, we examined the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and genetic features of 13 breast NEC (7 SCNEC, 4 LCNEC, 2 NEC with ambiguous small versus large cell morphology [ANEC]). Co-alterations of TP53 and RB1 were identified in 86% (6/7) SCNEC

Small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and the rare large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma belong to the high grade pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinomas. Making the correct diagnosis and selection of treatment modalities require multidisciplinary meetings due to the morphological overlaps, aggressive behaviour and debated therapeutic guidelines of these entities. A 52-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of headache, nausea and tenebrous vision. The CT revealed metastatic tumour mass in the occipital lobe and in the cerebellum. Both tumours were removed and resulted in histological diagno

We report a case of coexisting poorly differentiated endocrine carcinoma and conventional adenocarcinoma in the ampulla of Vater. A 70-year-old female had a recent history of symptoms and signs related to obstructive jaundice. An initial endoscopic biopsy of the ampulla of Vater showed a poorly differentiated endocrine carcinoma in the lamina propria of duodenal mucosa. The tumor could also be categorized into large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma under the WHO classification of pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors. The patient underwent Whipple's operation. After thorough microscopic examination of

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the ampulla of Vater is rare and very different from the common ampullary adenocarcinoma. A 59-year-old man was admitted with obstructive jaundice. Gastroendoscopy showed a swollen ampulla of Vater and pathological examination of an ampullary biopsy revealed findings of a carcinoid tumor. After endoscopic biliary drainage, he underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy. A diagnosis of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma was confirmed by immunohistochemical examination of the resected specimen. Despite adjuvant chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide and cisplatin, liver

A case of ectopic gonadotropin production by a bronchogenic carcinoma is presented. Eleven similar cases have been previously reported. Urine gonadotropin titres appeared related to the size of the tumour mass since they decreased with response to treatment and increased when the tumour started progressing again. The hormone is most probably elaborated and secreted by the tumour cells.

Neuroendocrine carcinomas of the colon are aggressive and rare tumors that often present locally advanced and/or with distant metastases at diagnosis. Their incidence is reported to be <1%. Surgery plays a major role as the initial treatment for locally advanced disease, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy, since most of the cases present in the advanced stage. Despite this, the overall prognosis is reported to be worse, with a median survival of 9 to 14 months. This is a case of an aggressive large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the right colon treated with upfront surgery followed by adjuvan

Esophageal large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy that presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present the case of a 72-year-old female with LCNEC of the distal esophagus who was initially treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, followed by immunotherapy due to disease progression. Diagnostic imaging revealed extensive metastases to the abdominal lymph nodes. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of LCNEC with high-grade squamous intraepithelial neoplasia. The treatment complexities underscore the necessity of a multi

Background and clinical significance: Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the cervix is considered a rare type of cancer: it represents <1% of invasive cervical cancers. The optimal treatment protocol is not fully established because of its rarity and diagnostic challenges. Case Presentation: A 72-year-old Asian female presented to our outpatient clinic with postmenopausal vaginal spotting for 1 month. Vaginal sonography revealed a cervical tumor of 2.7 cm in diameter with hypervascularity. Tumor markers such as CA 125, CA 19-9, carcinoembryonic antigen, and squamous cell carcinoma

RATIONALE: Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is a type of neuroendocrine carcinoma that is a rare malignant tumor that often coexists with adenocarcinoma in the same tissue. Adenocarcinoma cells may transform into LCNEC cells. The patient was found to have a liver mass 3 years after gastric adenocarcinoma surgery. Due to the absence of neuroendocrine cells in the liver, the patient's liver lesions may undergo neuroendocrine transformation after adenocarcinoma metastasis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was found to have a liver mass 3 years after gastric adenocarcinoma surgery, and th

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) represents an exceptionally aggressive and infrequent variant within the realm of non-small cell lung cancer, necessitating surgical intervention as the primary therapeutic approach. However, the postoperative management strategy for early-stage patients continues to be a subject of intense debate and uncertainty.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of patients diagnosed with LCNEC who underwent surgical resection at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital between July 2018 and June 2022. Comprehensive assessments,

A 63-year-old man suspected of having lung cancer underwent right upper lobectomy and was diagnosed with large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC). Eleven months after surgery, he developed an oligorecurrence in the adrenal gland and underwent left adrenalectomy. The specimen revealed LCNEC metastasis. Forty-one months after surgery, enlargement of a lesion near the surgical site was seen. Biopsy showed LCNEC metastasis and he is currently undergoing radiotherapy for the recurrent lesion. We report a case of LCNEC with adrenal gland oligorecurrence treated by adrenalectomy, which led to long
