Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive neuroendocrine skin malignancy. We report an exceptional case of a 71-year-old female presenting with a 5.7-cm MCC in the left parotid region, representing a rare case of true direct parotid parenchymal invasion-distinguished from the more common intraparotid nodal metastasis-alongside multiple regional nodal metastases. The patient underwent wide en bloc excision, superficial parotidectomy, and selective neck dissection. Despite tumor adherence, the main facial-nerve trunk was successfully preserved. The resulting 12×11 cm composite defect was

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an unusual skin tumor that has a significant rate of distant and local metastases. It is known that primary MCC of the eyelid usually occurs at the upper eyelid. Here we report an unusual case of MCC metastasis to the eyelid. A 63-year-old male was diagnosed with MCC three years earlier after initially presenting with a mass in his right thigh. After histopathological diagnosis, the patient received medical therapy. During treatment, he developed multiple distant metastases and a firm, purple, vascularized lesion on the upper eyelid. We confirmed the lesion was a

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare neoplasm that arises in the skin of elderly patients on sun-exposed areas such as the head, neck, and extremities. Involvement of the epidermis by tumor cells is a relatively uncommon phenomenon. However, a few cases have been reported of Merkel cell carcinoma in situ (MCCIS) in which tumor cells are confined exclusively to the epidermis without dermal involvement. Herein, we present a peculiar MCCIS lesion in a 66-year-old man composed of tumor cells in a nested and lentiginous growth pattern, exhibiting variable quantities of intracytoplasmic dusty brown

A 67-year-old female presented with 2 weeks of right eye pain, redness, and diplopia. An orbital mass was found on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biopsy revealed Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). She had no primary head or neck lesion and no previous history of MCC. Positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed hypermetabolic subcutaneous lesions of the lower extremity andmultiple osseous lesions of the axial and appendicular skeleton. She received palliative external radiation of 20 Gy in 5 fractions to the orbit. After discussing immunotherapy, she opted for comfort care and expired 1 mon

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive cutaneous malignancy of neuroendocrine origin presenting as a painless, rapidly growing nodule. MCC often presents in elderly, fair-skinned individuals in sun-exposed areas. Diagnosis is often overlooked at time of presentation due to its rarity, but MCC is twice as deadly as malignant melanoma. There has been bigger interest in the disease due to increasing incidence and an association with the prevalent virus Merkel cell polyomavirus. This study describes an uncommon presentation of MCC as a right gluteal lesion in an Afro-Panamanian patient. The

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, clinically aggressive neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin; MCC is 40 times less common as compared to melanoma. The most frequently reported sites have been the head and neck, extremities, and trunk. Potential mimics include malignant melanoma, lymphoma, or metastatic small cell (neuroendocrine) carcinomas. Histopathology of MCC resembles small cell carcinoma both morphologically and on IHC. The possible cell of origin was proposed as the Merkel cell, which functions as a mechanoreceptor. It has a high chance of local recurrence, regional and distant spr

Merkel cell carcinoma and melanoma can each occur primarily in breast skin, or metastasize to the breast. The breast is a rare site of metastasis of essentially any and every type of tumor, including carcinomas, sarcomas, and hematolymphoid neoplasms, and 10-30% of breast metastases may represent the initial presentation of disease. Although metastases generally recapitulate histologic features of the primary tumor, they are diagnostically challenging given their rarity and morphologic overlap with breast carcinoma, including special types of breast cancer. Histologic clues may include lack of

The aim of this study was to perform a systematic literature review of Merkel cell carcinomas (MCCs) originating exclusively in the ear, nose and throat (ENT) district. An appropriate string was run on PubMed to retrieve articles dealing with ENT presentations of MCC. A double cross-check was performed on citations and full-text articles found using the selected inclusion and exclusion criteria. In total, 43 articles were finally included in the study, describing 51 cases of MCC involving the ENT region: 22/51 (43%) cases involving the ear; 20/51 (39%) cases involving the mucosal sites; 9/51 (

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare malignant cutaneous tumour, the incidence of which is increasing. Second malignancies have been reported to occur with high incidence in these patients.
OBJECTIVES: We report the rate and nature of multiple malignancies in patients with MCC treated over a 10 year period in Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, United Kingdom, as well as the temporal relationship of these additional malignancies to the diagnosis of MCC.
RESULTS: The 27 patients had an approximately equal sex incidence with a median age at diagnosis of 79 years. Seventy percent

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology1999eng
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin and cutaneous malignant melanoma can now be compared epidemiologically through the use of population-based data not previously available for MCC. The results may provide new clues to etiology. In this study, United States data covered by the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program were from nine areas of the United States (approximately 10% of the population). In 1986-1994, 425 cases of MCC were registered. The annual age-adjusted incidence per 100,000 of MCC was 0.23 for whites and 0.01 for blacks; among whites, the ratio of melanoma

The incidence of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare and highly metastatic skin malignancy, has sharply increased in the last decade. Clinical biomarkers are urgently needed for MCC prognosis, treatment response monitoring, and early diagnosis of relapse. The clinical interest of circulating tumors cells (CTCs) has been validated in many solid cancers. The aim of this study was to compare CTC detection and characterization in blood samples of patients with MCC using the CellSearch System and the RosetteSep -DEPArray workflow, an innovative procedure to enrich, detect and isolate single CTCs. Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor with poor prognosis, requiring precise surgical management within a multidisciplinary approach. We conducted a narrative review with a structured literature search in biomedical databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science) and official guidelines (NCCN, ESMO). Thirty high-quality and clinically relevant articles were selected based on methodological rigor and applicability. Wide local excision with 1-2 cm margins remains the standard of care for localized disease. Sentinel lymph node biopsy should be perform

INTRODUCTION: There are few studies on the pattern of distant spread of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC).
OBJECTIVES: To analyse the most frequent locations of distant metastases from MCC and their possible relationship with the location of the primary tumour.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with cutaneous MCC between 1988 and 2022 were included in the study. The locations of the first metastases detected were recorded, both at tumour diagnosis and during follow-up after initial treatment.
RESULTS: One hundred patients were diagnosed with MCC. Distant metastases were detected in 31 patients (seven a

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a highly aggressive neuroendocrine tumor, known for its rapid progression and poor prognosis. It most commonly affects elderly and immunocompromised individuals, with variable clinical presentations that can make diagnosis challenging. MCC is often mistaken for other skin malignancies, such as basal or squamous cell carcinoma, or even benign skin lesions. Early diagnosis is critical to initiate appropriate treatment, typically involving surgery, radiation, and immunotherapy. This report describes a 66-year-old man diagnosed with MCC with regional lymph node invol

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare skin cancer characterized by neuroendocrine differentiation. Its carcinogenesis is based either on the integration of the Merkel cell polyomavirus or on ultraviolet (UV) mutagenesis, both of which lead to high immunogenicity either through the expression of viral proteins or neoantigens. Despite this immunogenicity resulting from viral or UV-associated carcinogenesis, it exhibits highly aggressive behavior. However, owing to the rarity of MCC and the lack of epidemiologic registries with detailed clinical data, there is some uncertainty regarding the spont
