Childhood cardiovascular morphology and function following abnormal fetal growth.

Studies examining the link between abnormal fetal growth and cardiac changes in childhood have presented conflicting results. We studied the effect of abnormal fetal growth on cardiac morphology and function during childhood, while controlling for body size, composition and postnatal factors. We report on the follow-up of 90 children (median age 5.81 years, IQR 5.67; 5.95) born appropriate for gestational age (AGA, N = 48), small for gestational age (SGA, N = 23), or large for gestational age (LGA, N = 19); SGA and LGA defined as birth weight Z-score < - 2 and >  + 2, respectively. We examined

A rare congenital cardiovascular abnormality presenting as respiratory distress in an infant.

AB toxins consist of an enzymatic A subunit and a cell-binding B subunit(1). These toxins are secreted into the extracellular milieu, but they act upon targets within the eukaryotic cytosol. Some AB toxins travel by vesicle carriers from the cell surface to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) before entering the cytosol(2-4). In the ER, the catalytic A chain dissociates from the rest of the toxin and moves through a protein-conducting channel to reach its cytosolic target(5). The translocated, cytosolic A chain is difficult to detect because toxin trafficking to the ER is an extremely inefficient p

Early cardiovascular structural and functional abnormalities as a guide to future morbid events.

AIMS: Our aim was to evaluate the predictive value of a battery of 10 non-invasive tests of cardiovascular structural and functional health on the future risk of cardiovascular morbid events. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 1900 asymptomatic adults concerned about their risk for cardiovascular disease underwent non-invasive assessment with 10 tests of vascular and cardiac structure and function. A disease score (DS) was calculated for each individual based on these 10 tests. Follow-up (mean 9.2 years) for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality was available for 1442 individuals (mean age 53.2

Prognostic implications of microvascular and macrovascular abnormalities in older adults: cardiovascular health study.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular and macrovascular abnormalities are frequently found on noninvasive tests performed in older adults. Their prognostic implications on disability and life expectancy have not been collectively assessed. METHODS: This prospective study included 2,452 adults (mean age: 79.5 years) with available measures of microvascular (brain, retina, kidney) and macrovascular abnormalities (brain, carotid, coronary, peripheral artery) in the Cardiovascular Health Study. The burden of microvascular and macrovascular abnormalities was examined in relation to total, activity-of-daily-li

Induced chromosome deletion in a Williams-Beuren syndrome mouse model causes cardiovascular abnormalities.

AIMS: The Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a genetic disorder caused by a heterozygous ~1.5-Mb deletion. The aim of this study was to determine how the genetic changes in a Wbs mouse model alter Eln expression, blood pressure, vessel structure, and abdominal aortic wall dynamics in vivo. METHODS: Elastin (ELN) transcript levels were quantified by qRT-PCR and blood pressure was measured with a tail cuff system. M-mode ultrasound was used to track pulsatile abdominal aortic wall motion. Aortas were sectioned and stained to determine medial lamellar structure. RESULTS: ELN transcript levels we

Autonomic nervous system abnormalities in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2: a cardiovascular neurophysiologic study.

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction is part of the spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) clinical picture, but few data are available on this topic. The present study is aimed to report a detailed investigation of autonomic nervous system in patients with molecular diagnosis of SCA type 2, one of the most frequent forms and the commonest in Italy. Nine patients with a mild to moderate form of SCA2 underwent a questionnaire about dysautonomic symptoms and a complete cardiovascular neurophysiologic evaluation of both sympathetic and parasympathetic system, comprising head-up tilt, standing, isometric ha

Cardiovascular abnormalities and arrhythmias in patients with Ondine's curse (congenital central hypoventilation) syndrome.

Patients with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) (Ondine's curse syndrome) have impaired autonomic control of ventilation with intact voluntary control of respiration. Autonomic dysfunction and cardiac abnormalities are common in CCHS. Bradyarrhythmias are life-threatening and often require pacemaker insertion. We presented a case of a patient with CCHS suffering from long sinus pauses requiring cardiac pacemaker insertion. Patients with CCHS are at risk for pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale secondary to chronic hypoxia. Diaphragmatic pacing has been beneficial in some p

Metabolic abnormalities related to cardiovascular risk in primary hyperparathyroidism: effects of surgical treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Untreated primary hyperarathyroidism (pHPT) is accompanied by an excessive morbidity in circulatory disorders, associated with blood pressure and diabetes. The aim of the present study was to further penetrate the impact of pHPT on glucose, urate, lipid and lipoprotein concentrations, known to be interrelated metabolic cardiovascular risk factors. DESIGN: Longitudinal study of patients with pHPT before and 1 year after surgical treatment. SETTING: Departments of Internal Medicine and Surgery, Lund University Hospital. SUBJECTS: One hundred and seventeen consecutive patients with

P-Wave dispersion and atrial conduction abnormalities in migraine: implications for cardiovascular risk.

INTRODUCTION: Migraine is a common neurological disorder that is increasingly recognized for its systemic effects extending beyond the central nervous system. Emerging evidence suggests a potential association between migraine and cardiovascular dysfunction; however, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain insufficiently elucidated. In this study we aimed to evaluate atrial electromechanical delay in patients with migraine and to test the hypothesis that migraine may be linked to subclinical cardiac alterations, particularly in atrial conduction. METHODS: This cross-sectional stud

Cardiovascular abnormalities in patients with SHANK3 pathogenic variants: Beyond neurodevelopmental disorders and epilepsy.

Neurodevelopmental disorders have been linked to numerous genes, particularly pathogenic variants in genes encoding postsynaptic scaffolding proteins, like SHANK3. This study aims to provide insights into the cardiovascular profile of patients with pathogenic SHANK3 variants, expanding beyond the well-established associations with neurodevelopmental disorders and epilepsy. We conducted a prospective study involving patients affected by neurodevelopmental disorders with pathogenic SHANK3 variants. Comprehensive cardiovascular assessments were performed and molecular genetic testing included chr

Offspring of women with hyperemesis gravidarum are more likely to have cardiovascular abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a severe form of pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting affecting 0.3-2.3% of pregnancies, which can lead to fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and weight loss, and is usually severe enough to require hospitalization. Abnormally elevated urinary ketones are commonly seen in patients with HG, and ketone bodies are free to pass through the placenta, and maternal hyperketonemia, with or without acidosis, is associated with an increased rate of stillbirth, an increased incidence of congenital anomalies, and impaired neu

Long-term anabolic steroids in male bodybuilders induce cardiovascular structural and autonomic abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to examine the hypothesis that users of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) would have cardiac autonomic disorders and that there is a correlation between sympathetic modulation, high blood pressure (BP) and alterations to cardiac dimensions. METHODS: Forty-five male subjects were enrolled in the study. They were categorized into three groups comprising bodybuilders actively using AAS (AAS users; n = 15), bodybuilders who had never used AAS (nonusers; n = 15) and age-paired healthy sedentary controls (n = 15). Hemodynamic parameters, linear and nonlinear

Extreme hydrops fetalis and cardiovascular abnormalities in mice lacking a functional Adrenomedullin gene.

Adrenomedullin, a recently identified potent vasodilator, is expressed widely and has been suggested to have functions ranging from reproduction to blood pressure regulation. To elucidate these functions and define more precisely sites of Adm expression, we replaced the coding region of the Adm gene in mice with a sequence encoding enhanced green fluorescent protein while leaving the Adm promoter intact. We find that Adm(-/-) embryos die at midgestation with extreme hydrops fetalis and cardiovascular abnormalities, including overdeveloped ventricular trabeculae and underdeveloped arterial wall

Effects of bone marrow transplantation on the cardiovascular abnormalities in canine mucopolysaccharidosis VII.

The genetic mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a family of lysosomal storage diseases resulting from defective catabolism of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Echocardiographic abnormalities in dogs with MPS type VII (Sly syndrome, beta-glucuronidase deficiency) included mitral valve thickening and insufficiency, large aortic dimensions in both the long and short axes, and thickened aortic valves. Grossly, at post mortem examination, there was nodular thickening of the mitral valve, a prominent ductus diverticulum, and a dilated aorta with thickened walls. Histologically, cytoplasmic vacuolation was see
