Subjective well-being in dentists: the role of intrinsic aspirations.

OBJECTIVES: To take a motivational approach, testing an idea derived from self-determination theory (SDT) that the pursuit of intrinsic life and professional aspirations is associated with enhanced subjective well-being. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of a cluster sample of 583 dentists in England provided data on the subjective importance of their intrinsic and extrinsic aspirations and their perceived likelihood of achieving those aspirations. The dependent variable was a four-domain measure of subjective well-being. RESULTS: Controlling measures of core self-evaluations and trait emoti

Report of the ACR task force on international teleradiology.

Telemedicine is becoming an increasingly important tool in the practice of medicine throughout the world. For radiologists, telemedicine translates to teleradiology. Because an increasing amount of imaging is now archived in a digital format, and with the application of more powerful computers in radiology, digital image transmission between display stations is becoming commonplace. The ability to move large diagnostic image data sets to display stations anywhere in the world using the Internet and other high-speed data links is solving some problems and creating others. Disadvantage in physically disabled adults: an assessment of the causation and selection hypotheses.

An area survey of West Beirut provided the opportunity to study whether disadvantage among people with physical disabilities is attributed to social class of origin (causation) or is due to the social consequences of disability (selection and drift). Adults who were disabled from poliomyelitis in childhood were compared to West Beirut residents and to age and sex matched sibling controls. The typical finding of a substantially greater proportion of disabled people in the lower social class groups was noted. Their fathers were also over-represented in the lower social classes but to a lesser ex

Participation and persistence in a nontraditional allied health education program.

The results of this study suggest the following three practical applications. First, adult educators and program planners in medical record administration can use the results of achievement motivation studies in recruitment, counseling, and screening efforts in both medical record technology and nontraditional ART progression programs to determine which ART candidates possess a strong need to achieve. Once identified, these individuals may be the most successful in reducing or eliminating situational, institutional, dispositional, and informational barriers to participation and persistence. Se

"Our program manager is a woman for the first time": perceptions of health managers on what workplace policies and practices exist to advance women's career progression in the health sector in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence suggests that organisation-level policies are important in enabling gender equality and equity in the workplace. However, there is little research exploring the knowledge of health sector employees on whether policies and practices to advance women's career progression exist in their organisations. In this qualitative study, we explored the knowledge and perspectives of health managers on which of their organisations' workplace policies and practices contribute to the career advancement of women and their knowledge of how such policies and practices are implemente

Graduate nurses in Northern Ireland: their career paths, aspirations and problems.

This paper is based on a survey of graduates from the B.Sc. in Nursing studies at the New University of Ulster (now the University of Ulster). Six cohorts, those entering between 1975 and 1980, were sent a postal questionnaire. The results cover the careers of these graduates and also describe their problems and their aspirations. The findings confirm those of other studies in relation to the clinical orientation of graduate nurses. Some respondents had positive views about graduate status, others had experienced prejudice and even hostility. Most respondents intended to pursue a lifetime care

Developing a career and competency framework for midwives in China.

BACKGROUND: In mainland China, midwifery lacks an independent regulatory system. The subordination of midwifery practice to the nursing framework impedes professional advancement. AIM: To establish a framework that defines midwifery competencies, scopes of practice, and career advancement pathways in China. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was adopted. A literature review and reference group discussions were used to draft the framework. Two rounds of national e-Delphi consultations followed, revising and refining the competency items. A satisfaction survey preliminarily assessed the framewo

Perspectives of nursing doctoral students on the impact of doctoral education on their professional and career development: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Doctoral education enhances nurses' evidence-based decision-making, care quality, and professional visibility, yet significant global disparities in program structure and persistent challenges faced by students and graduates limit its full potential. This study aims to explore the experiences of nurses enrolled in doctoral education, particularly those who are actively working as nurses in the healthcare setting, and how this education contributes to their professional development and supports their future career goals. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study using individual in-

Needs and challenges for health services research at academic health centers.

What are the institutional strategies used by academic health centers and other academic institutions to support and maintain the infrastructure that promotes health services research? Using the findings from interviews conducted in late 1998 with health services researchers at ten health services research centers of several types and from several geographic areas, and with the directors of ten health services research training centers, the authors address this key issue by examining four central infrastructure needs and challenges for health services research: (1) organizing core institutiona

The nursing shortage. Past, present, and future.

According to healthcare experts, the present nursing shortage is going to extend to 2020 with an estimated 400,000 RN vacancies. A number of factors are contributing to the shortage: an increase in the age of registered nurses, decreased school enrollment, increased career opportunities for women, changes in the healthcare delivery system, nurse "burn-out," and the public's misunderstanding of what nurses do. Additionally, a number of social and economic trends are going to affect the healthcare delivery system in the future, such as: aging of the population, increased technology, the increase

The Jewish Pathologist Carl Julius Rothberger (1871-1945) and the gradual deprivation of his rights in the Third Reich.

The Jewish pathologist Carl Julius Rothberger (1871-1945) is undoubtedly one of the most important representatives of his field. His studies on atrial fibrillation, the bundle branch block and arrhythmia perpetua in particular secured him a place in medical history. Rothberger also gave the name to an agar used to prove the neutral red reduction of salmonella (Rothberger-Scheffler agar). While Rothberger's name is well known in pathology, his biography and his experiences of stigmatization as a Jewish university lecturer have received little attention. The latter are therefore the focus of thi

Motivated to penalize: women's strategic rejection of successful women.

Two studies tested the hypothesis that females penalize women who succeed in male gender-typed jobs to salvage their own self-views regarding competence. The authors proposed that women are motivated to penalize successful women (i.e., characterize them as unlikable and interpersonally hostile) to minimize the self-evaluative consequences of social comparison with a highly successful female target. Results supported the hypothesis. Whereas both male and female participants penalized successful women, blocking this penalization reduced female--but not male--participants' self-ratings of compete

[Between fetishism and survival: are scientific articles a form of academic merchandise?].

This article discusses the possible meanings of the intense prevailing concern in academic circles over the notion of research productivity, as reflected in an excess number of articles published in various scientific journals. The numerical accounting of articles published by researchers in scientific journals with renowned academic status serves to legitimize academics in their fields of work, in various ways. In this sense, we suggest that scientific articles take on aspects of merchandise-as-fetish, according to Marx's theory of use-value and exchange-value and Benjamin's exposure value. M
