Comparative gliding performance of Anolis lizards among three Caribbean ecomorphs.

Anole lizards (genus Anolis) have repeatedly and independently occupied arboreal niches, and in parallel have evolved associated morphologies and locomotor behaviors. In arboreal vertebrates more generally, parachuting and gliding have frequently evolved in response to selective pressure for targeting and controlled landings during either falls or intentional jumps. Here we describe morphological features and aerial performance among five anole species representing the trunk-ground, trunk-crown, and crown giant ecomorphs. Aerial behavior within a vertical wind tunnel was used to evaluate glidi

Sequential Production of Sodium Alginate and Biomethane from Holopelagic Sargassum spp. to Promote a Circular Economy in the Mexican Caribbean.

This research proposes an approach based on a circular economy principle for the integral valorization of Sargassum from the Mexican Caribbean. The biomass was characterized through proximal and elemental analyses, and then an oxidative pretreatment was carried out to enhance a sequential processing scheme to extract sodium alginate and use the solid waste as a substrate for biogas production via anaerobic digestion. The oxidative pretreatment successfully reduces the recalcitrant content and the concentration of heavy metals. The sodium alginate extracted from treated biomass achieves a yield

Optimizing HIV Spending Among Key Populations in Five Latin American and Caribbean Countries: A Mathematical Modelling Study.

INTRODUCTION: From 2010 to 2024, the Latin America region experienced a 13% increase in new HIV acquisitions, while progress in reducing HIV acquisitions has slowed in the Caribbean. We conducted allocative efficiency studies for five countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region, aiming to estimate how HIV spending could be optimally allocated for maximal impact. METHODS: Between 2021 and 2025, we collaborated with national partners in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Honduras to develop national Optima HIV models incorporating country-specific key populations.

Latin America and the Caribbean: Challenges and Opportunities for HIV Treatment and Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: In Latin America, there are rising numbers of new HIV acquisitions, while the Caribbean has achieved decreases in both new acquisitions and AIDS-related deaths. The Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region has worked towards widely available treatment for people with HIV (PWHIV) within public health systems and, in Latin America, has relied principally on domestic financing to do so. DISCUSSION: While new methods of prevention are in the process of being incorporated into regional HIV programmes, the HIV cascade of care remains below the UNAIDS goals. Only 17 of the 32 LAC coun

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean: Reconciling the Multiplicity of Ciguatoxins and Analytical Chemistry Approach for Public Health Safety.

Ciguatera is a major circumtropical poisoning caused by the consumption of marine fish and invertebrates contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs): neurotoxins produced by endemic and benthic dinoflagellates which are biotransformed in the fish food-web. We provide a history of ciguatera research conducted over the past 70 years on ciguatoxins from the Pacific Ocean (P-CTXs) and Caribbean Sea (C-CTXs) and describe their main chemical, biochemical, and toxicological properties. Currently, there is no official method for the extraction and quantification of ciguatoxins, regardless their origin, mainl

A new species of shrimp, genus Ambidexter Manning & Chace, 1971 (Decapoda: Processidae), from southeastern Caribbean Sea, Venezuela, with key to genus.

A new species of processid shrimp, Ambidexter cochensis sp. nov. is described from Venezuela, on the basis of several specimens collected in seagrass beds at a depth less than 1 m. This new species is closely related to A. swifti Abele, 1972 from eastern Pacific, which mainly differs by the number of carpal articles of the second pereiopod, the setation pattern on the telson and the structure of the appendix masculina of the male second pleopod. A key to genus is presented.

Hurricane effects, mitigation, and preparedness in the Caribbean: Perspectives on high importance-low prevalence practices from agricultural advisors.

Frequent hurricanes affect agricultural productivity, food security, economic security, and human wellbeing in the Caribbean islands. We assessed recent hurricane effects on the agricultural sector, and the challenges faced by farmers, foresters, and advisors related to hurricane preparedness and recovery in Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands (USVI). We used qualitative and quantitative survey methods to compile perspectives from agricultural advisors related to hurricane effects on farmlands, preparedness and recovery measures taken by land managers, and the needs regarding preparing for and r

An Exploratory Survey on the Care for Ataxic Patients in the American Continents and the Caribbean.

Little is known about access of rare disease carriers to health care. To increase this knowledge, the Pan American Hereditary Ataxia Network (PAHAN) conducted an exploratory survey about care for hereditary ataxias in American continents and the Caribbean. A questionnaire was sent to health professionals about the hereditary ataxias identified; access to care; and local teaching and research. The number of ataxics under current care per 100,000 inhabitants was subtracted from the expected overall prevalence of 6/100,000, to estimate the prevalence of uncovered ataxic patients. Local Human Deve

Canine babesiosis: A literature review of prevalence, distribution, and diagnosis in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Canine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease with worldwide distribution and global significance. Traditionally, canine babesiosis was caused by B. canis (large Babesia) and B. gibsoni (small Babesia) based on cytological examination of stained blood smears. Currently, molecular techniques have demonstrated that several Babesia species infect dogs: B. canis, B. vogeli, and B. rossi (large forms) and B. gibsoni, B. conradae, and B. vulpes (small forms). In this study, we compiled and reviewed currently available data on Babesia infections in dogs in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as on d

Viral hepatitis in Latin America and the Caribbean: a public health challenge.

Viral hepatitis (VH) is an emergent concern in public health agendas worldwide. More than one million people die annually from hepatitis and 57% and 78% of global cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma cases, respectively, are caused by VH. The burden of disease caused by hepatitis in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is high. Data on hepatitis has been collected in several countries, but more accurate and comparable studies are needed. Hepatitis B vaccination and screening of donated blood are routine practices in the region. However, integrated policies covering prevention and control of

The control of tuberculosis in the Caribbean.

A survey of the Ministries of Health in the English-speaking Caribbean countries was conducted with the purpose of collecting information about current capacity in the prevention and control of tuberculosis. A response rate of 78.9% was achieved. The results of this survey indicate that tuberculosis control programmes in the English-speaking Caribbean are limited, and inadequately address issues relating to multi-drug resistant disease and co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Limitations and implications of this survey are discussed.

From Hurricane Irma to the Grindavík eruptions: volatility premiums in disaster governance.

Environmental volatility can inflate property values even as it destroys them. To show how, this article pairs a postcolonial micro-state in the Caribbean (Sint Maarten after Hurricane Irma) with a Nordic welfare town (Grindavík in Iceland following volcanic eruptions) because they occupy the opposite ends of the governance capacity spectrum, while sharing certain similarities. Drawing on reports, media archives, 31 ethnographic interviews, and transaction data from 2015-25, it traces four mechanisms that convert danger into a 'volatility premium': distressed asset acquisition; symbolic risk b

Mapping stakeholders for developing cancer research in Small Island Developing States: a descriptive study from the Eastern Caribbean.

INTRODUCTION: High cancer mortality in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is compounded by the insufficient evidence from local epidemiological studies. Stakeholder engagement is particularly important in SIDS to ultimately drive these studies and cancer control. We aimed to map cancer control stakeholders as part of the development of the CaSIDEC study. METHODS: The Cancer in Small Island Developing States of the Eastern Caribbean (CaSIDEC) study investigates the role of overseas travel on cancer survivorship in the six countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Marine litter in mangrove soils of Roatán, Western Caribbean: Abundance, sources, and ingestion by an American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus).

Mangrove forests in insular regions are increasingly exposed to marine litter, even within designated protected areas. These ecosystems provide key ecological services but remain vulnerable to pollution via solid waste accumulation. Caribbean mangroves, in particular, are underrepresented in global assessments. This study provides the first baseline of macrolitter accumulation in mangroves on Roatán Island, within the Bay Islands National Marine Park, Honduras. We assessed: (1) the abundance and composition of macrolitter (≥5 cm) across four mangrove sites; (2) potential sources of macroplasti

Hurricanes, reconstruction, and resistance: thinking through vulnerability in the Caribbean.

This paper critically analyses events that surrounded the reconstruction of the Colombian archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina islands after Hurricane Iota struck in 2020. Discussing the historical-structural and conjunctural dimensions within which the archipelago's history, various hurricanes, and reconstructions must be set, this paper draws on two theoretical conversations from Latin American and Caribbean critical thought and the critical humanitarian field that understand humanitarian governance as an 'arena of dispute'. Through mainly archival research of different

Topology Testing and Demographic Modeling Illuminate a Novel Speciation Pathway in the Greater Caribbean Sea Following the Formation of the Isthmus of Panama.

Recent genomic analyses have highlighted the prevalence of speciation with gene flow in many taxa and have underscored the importance of accounting for these reticulate evolutionary processes when constructing species trees and generating parameter estimates. This is especially important for deepening our understanding of speciation in the sea where fast-moving ocean currents, expanses of deep water, and periodic episodes of sea level rise and fall act as soft and temporary allopatric barriers that facilitate both divergence and secondary contact. Under these conditions, gene flow is not expec
